Bratislava Day Trip from Vienna
Reviewed 6 August 2014

Bratislava to Vienna in 70 minutes or so by boat. It had to be done. And we were really lucky, the weather was gorgeous so we could happily walk outside, have a beer and a sandwich and relax as we sped down the river.
It is not the most scenic of cruises, there are a couple of interesting castles to see as you whoosh by at over 50 kph, but it is smooth and more interesting than the bus or train.
I would certainly recommend, though cross your fingers for some sun!

We accidentally booked a 1-way ticket Bratislava to Vienna, when we actually meant Vienna to Bratislava. Turned up at the dock in Vienna and realised our mistake. The captain very kindly talked on our behalf to head office and cleared that it was ok for us to take the journey the other way. THANK YOU SO MUCH!

The trip itself is very speedy, nice scenery along the way. It's a bit enclosed, but if you want some fresh air then you can go round the side. The dock at the Bratislava end is very close and convenient for town - at the Vienna end it's a bit more out of the way, but with an easy Metro connection to town.

We flew from England to Bratislava and then took the hydrofoil to Vienna. We saved a ton of money this way. I reckon the flights and hotel were at least 50% of the cost of going to Vienna direct. The hydrofoil is a wonderful way to travel down the Danube. You can take in the views, have a drink, and generally wander about the boat at your leisure. It takes 90 mins and is comfortable and interesting. We booked in advance and paid the extra 5 Euros or so to get the front 3 seats. I highly recommend you do that. It makes the whole experience 100 times better. We took the train back, and whilst the train was 30 mins quicker and 5 Euros cheaper, it was nowhere near as much fun!

We needed to return to Bratislava from Vienna to get the plane home so we decided to take the boat along the Danube. It is quite a boring trip after a while, all there is are lots of little fishing huts all along the river on both banks, it's very flat and there are next to no views. Every now and again a huge barge makes an appearance to break up the monotony. Things pick up as you appraoch Bratislava for the last 15 minutes. Bratislava is a large town but with a very small city centre which is very pretty, the tourist office were kind enough to let us leave our small suitcases with them while we looked around. You can do all the streets in a couple of hours, the beer is bery good and very cheap. We took a bus to the airport, the bus drivers are completely nuts, they accelerate as quickly as they can then slam on the brakes when they get near the vehicle in front, not recommended. The airport is very plush and modern but the only beer they sell is 12%.
