During a recent visit to the city we spent a bit of time at Bratislava Castle (Hrad) and had somewhat mixed feelings about this attraction overall. Unfortunately, there is not much to see/do within the castle itself. However, we enjoyed its presence next to the city center, and were quite happy with the very good views found from the castle grounds of the city area. This was worth making the trip up to the castle.

There is a nice historical account to the land and various fortifications that have occupied this hilltop. However, there is not much to see within the Bratislava Castle, just a few rooms with exhibitions (not open on Monday). In this regard, compared to regional counterparts like Prague Castle or other stately attractions like the Hofburg Palace in Vienna, we found the Bratislava Castle quite lacking.

However, what Hrad lacks in terms of inclusions, it makes up for in presence. From a distance, Bratislava Castle reminded us of the lovely Trakal Castle in Lithuania but set upon hill instead of an island. It makes for a nice image set behind the city center and its presence makes contribution to the overall atmosphere of Bratislava.

We also found the castle grounds, which are free to visit and wonder around, to offer some very good views of the city center and Danube River. From the castle there are many view points for which to see the surrounding area. In particular, views of the The tower of St. Martin's Cathedral and UFO Observation Deck on the Novy Most bridge stick out quite prominently.

In the end, as for the castle visit itself, you can find much better throughout Europe. However, the views afforded from the Bratislava Castle are worth making the walk up to the castle grounds when you visit Bratislava, even during the shortest of trips to the city.

Castle is great...for views, history, and a hike up the hill. Just wish exhibits measured up. Suffice to say a show about Slovakian military medals was less than thrilling. Still it was only one room. And I believe the exhibits change with some frequency.

Lovely stroll up to the castle, great views, nice gardens. Plenty to keep you interested. You need to pay to enter the museum.

Great place to go and see Bratislava from above. The castle is nothing gorgeous but it is pretty and offers fabulous grounds and a marvelous view from above. We enjoy walking and loved the hike up to the castle, great way to burn off some calories while taking in the sites.

We choose not to take the interior tour, since it did not seem if offered much of substance.
Overall one of the sightseeing highlights of Bratislava- don't miss it!

Walked up the gentle slope to the castle on a lovely sunny day.Did not enter the castle instead walked outside in the castle grounds.Lovely views over Bratislava and the Danube.Castle grounds free to enter.Left the castle by the main gate and turned left to view the Slovak Parliament a beautiful building with a waterfall and a viewing platform overlooking the Danube river below.Enjoy the view whilst sipping a coffee in the Parliament café nearby.Suprisingly cheap.Next a short walk brought me to the UP trolley bus stop.Caught frequent trolley bus service SLAVIN monument for 35 cent.Actually you need to walk about 500 meters to the monument or catch the shuttle minibus..The SLAVIN monument is huge and beautiful. In the well laid gardens there are headstones with the names of the dead Russian soldier enscribed. Some have pictures of the soldier named on the headstone.Particularly sad are the headstones laid side by side with the same surname obviously brothers. Some mother lost two sons. What a huge sacrifice.By the way the area where the Slavin monument is located is very posh.Beautiful huge houses with fabulous views of Bratislava. The area is also where the British/American/Chinese embassies are located.Walked back to trolley bus stop put 35cent in machine to get ticket caught bus back to old town/town centre.
