“Nicer than some apartments I've lived in!”
Reviewed 13 July 2014

My boyfriend and I booked a private double room with Freddie Next To Mercury because the reviews were good and the price was right (and Justin just loved the name). We were able to park our rental car on the street right out front and check in was quick and easy. We were given room number 43 and headed up stairs. When I unlocked the door, I was surprised to find another staircase! Up we went and entered into an entire apartment! It was so much bigger than we expected! We had a large private balcony, private bathroom, a living room with couch and TV and small kitchenette, and then a ladder leading into a lofted sleeping area. This was literally bigger than our last apartment in Milwaukee. I wish we could have stayed longer. While we loved the cozy, quirkiness of the lofted sleep area, the bed was two twin mattresses on the floor. Not the most comfortable and we each had sore necks after two nights. It was also 31 degrees Celsius on our first day in Bratislava, so sleeping in a small loft on the top floor was extremely hot, but they did provide a fan for us which helped. Those comfort issues would be my one and only complaint. Otherwise, the place was great!

We were able to walk to the old town in about 10-15 minutes. The area of town was safe. We left a rental car parked on the street for two days with no problems. The staff provided us a map of the town and sold beers and other beverages at the front desk, which was staffed 24 hours a day. We had breakfast one morning for 2.50 euro each. There was coffee, cereal, bread with jam, meat and cheese. It was nice enough, but many other comparable hostels that I've stayed in would include this type of breakfast in the price. But for 2.50, you can't complain. On the second morning, we just ate at a place in town. Overall, I'm very happy with Freddie Next To Mercury and have already begun recommending it to my friends!

Room Tip: Room 43 was large with a nice large balcony. In hot weather, be aware that the lofted sleeping area...

Clean and spacious apartment with balcony, kitchenette and fridge. Easy to walk to city. The noise from streets might be irritating at night, however, we slept well even with window opened. The hostel itself was very quiet even though it has good conditions for social life with its terrace and common rooms. Weak WIFI signal in the room. Free towels.

The lady at check in made me feel we are at the wrong place, we didnt get any information about anything, at least small smile would make us feel welcome. The others made our stay pleasant and enjoyable.

Amazing double room! Had own en-suite (excellent shower), small kitchenette with fridge and cooker, very spacious room including a sofa. However bed was two singles pushed together. Free hairdryer and towels. Staff helpful and efficient. 5 mins walk to train station, so great for connections. 20 min walk to town, but good grocery shop straight across road from hostel. Very quiet hostel; not for partying. Double glazing made room peaceful. Breakfast (pay extra) was average.

If you go to Bratislava, I would highly recommend staying at Freddy next to Mercury hostel. It has large clean rooms containing varying amounts of comfortable beds with colorful bedspreads. It also offers an excellent value for your money by being fairly close to the city center. The staff were friendly and helpful with their and free advice and maps!

I traveled in a group of 4 and we stayed in two private double rooms. The room I was in was a loft - literally just a mattress on the floor of a lofted area that was may 4 feet tall and required climbing 15 steps. Wasn't really my cup of tea and was very uncomfortable. However it did have a nice big bathroom and living room area.

The benefits are that it is a 6 minute walk from the train station, so we did not have to deal with taxis (they like to take advantage of tourists) and it is pretty inexpensive. It was about 20 minute walk to the Old Town area, which is where all the restaurants are. It's about 35 minute walk to the Eurovea Mall. Since we stayed in a private room I can't really speak to the social atmosphere, as we didn't meet anyone.

Room Tip: If you book a private room, be sure to ask for a real bed if you're not interested in the loft.

Stayed four nights in two different rooms and found the hostel very good. The rooms are big, bathrooms clean and modern. The proximity to the train station and bus stops is useful, one does hear a lot of traffic from the rooms. The staff was very welcoming and helpful in answering questions.
