Penzion Sabato
Ranked #3 of 15 Hotels in Poprad
Reviewed 4 August 2014

Every now and then one comes across a hotel that it so interesting that it worth going to that place just for the hotel. Penzion Sabato is one of these hotels. It is unique and charming. It is located in old Poprad - a village so perfect that it looks like a movie set or Disneyland.

We were warmly greeted by an elegant lady who spoke English well. We enjoyed the bendy stairs up to our rooms. There were 3 of us. Each of our rooms were very different - and had very different prices. I LOVED my enormous room (#1) on the street side of the house. It had pillars, and vaulted ceilings, a working fireplace, and three beautiful windows with flowers. On the practical side it had a big TV, frig, and kettle.

Breakfast was included with the room and very good. It was nice to be able to order breakfast instead of the usual buffet. We had dinner at the hotel. It was very good and the service was excellent.

We ate lunch at Hotel Fortuna - just down the street from Penzion Sabato. It was a 4 star luncheon.

We walked to new Poprad (about 1 mile) and greatly enjoyed the little festival that was in progress.

All in all - fabulous hotel, fabulous place, very reasonable prices. I wish I could have stayed longer. Don't miss it.

Room Tip: Room 1 may be the most expensive but it is huge and worth it..

A beautifully restored building close to the aquapark . We spent 2 nights here in a family room. The room was very spacious and beautifully furnished. There was a seating area with a sofa and chairs and an upstairs room which our children slept in . The room also had a fridge and tea and coffee making facilities. The reception staff were very helpful and we were able to check in early on the day of arrival . Special mention must go to Ericca who insisted on having breakfast ready for us at 6am on the day of our departure .

This pension is a tastefully modernised old building in the centre of the old town, with some of the rooms (ours included) being barn conversions around the courtyard. Our superior double room turned out to be very large indeed, with a large double bed in a spacious room comprising bedroom, lounge with corner sofa and TV, with an adjacent kitchen/dining room, en-suite WC with jaccuzzi bath and separate shower. Excellent value for money.

The breakfast is good, with a choice of cooked and continental options. We ate here both nights of the stay - the dinner menu is good, and the food superbly cooked; in our experience you won't do better than this in Slovakia.

There is parking behind the Hotel, but you'll need guided there the first time.

It's an easy 20 minute walk to Aquacity spa down a village street then through an old industrial estate past the football ground.

A word of advice; TomTom doesn't quite find the street address, and you'll circle around the Pension without actually finding it. Park by the church in the village square (you can see the high spire), walk around the back of the church and you'll see the Pension. Then ask the staff for directions to the parking area.

And don't confuse Pension Sabato with the close-by and similarly named Hotel Sobota; you need to drive about a half-mile uphill from there.

I guess this is one of the most charming choices in Poprad, so i'll cut this very short. It has some good points and some bad points and i'll try to name them:

Good points:

Rooms: The rooms are not equal, i guess each one is different from the other, but all are really charming and they will give you a warm feeling in a cold winter night. Mine was really big with a chimney (costs extra money if you want to use it, but you can !) and a lot of wood in my room. It was not only really nice, but also really comfortable. You can see the room in the pictures. It also had a good bathroom, with some small amenities.

Medicore points: Service. There was no reception available when we were there. The check-in and check-out had to be done by the restaurant staff. They tried to do their best, but their English ranges from pretty medicore to almost non-existant. Fortunately the lady in the morning spoke german and was really nice to us, when she found out how to communicate with us. But, if they don't understand you, it can get a bit difficult to communicate.

Cleanliness: While the rooms felt clean, there were some small ants or something similar in both of our bathrooms. Not much, but enough to notice.

Narrow staircase: To get to your room, you must take a narrow staircase. Nothing for disabled people !

Bad points:

Location - It's pretty far out. You can go with a train to Spisska Sobota station and walk for 15 minutes or take a taxi from the main station, which takes 5 minutes and costs about 3 EUR, if you arrive by train. But every time you want to go to the center, plan for a long walk. If you want to eat something good, but not expensive, go to "Penzion Atrium". The owner is a strange, but friendly guy and he serves some really good value food.

Breakfast:

This is a real letdown. The lady in the kitchen will cook you some eggs or something else which you can choose from a menu, but the rest is really lean. We had one piece of white bread for each of us ! Next morning i got two, probably because i asked for one more the day before and they didn't have more available. Thats pretty poor in my view...

Verdict: Well, there isn't everything shiny around here. Rooms are really nice and comfy, but not cheap either (restaurant is also pretty expensive !). Staff will try do their best, but appear to be overloaded when there are more then two guests and there is was no reception when we were there. But, i guess you will not find anything nicer in Poprad. So, you should seriously consider staying here !

The building itself is a treat to visit - you feel transported into medieval times - and the staff gets big kudos for wonderful, warm hospitality. The facilities in this old, beautifully restored building in the medieval part of Poprad, called Spišska Sobota, are totally modern. Even Wi-Fi penetrates the thick stone walls! It is a wonderfully comfortable, interesting, hospitable place with a great breakfast (included) and a terrific dinner menu at reasonable prices. The Penzion is located along one side of the ancient market place of Spišska Sobota and the glorious St. George's Church (not to be missed!) is right across the street. Street construction makes it a tad difficult to find, but it is definitely the place to stay when visiting Poprad!

We stayed here one night on our way to the Low Tatras. We had a hard time finding the hotel and accidentally went to the wrong place (coincidentally there is a hotel called Penzion Saboto about one block away...). Once we finally found the right place, parking was a bit confusing. I do not recommend arriving at night time to avoid trying to find the place. We checked in at the restaurant and the only staff on hand was the waitress, who was kind enough to run out of the restaurant, hop in the car with us and show us where to park around the back of the hotel. Once we parked and got into the place everything was very wonderful!

The staff, however, speaks zero English so be prepared to have some struggle if you don't know German or Dutch.

The restaurant is wonderful. We had dinner our first night (which was pricey but delicious!). Breakfast was made to order and was also delicious. It was a nice change of pace from typical hotel breakfast buffets.

The room was shockingly nice and especially the bathroom. We had a spa whirlpool tub and a stand-up glass shower. Beautifully decorated and even had a full kitchen including a kitchen table and a separate living room with a sectional couch. We wish we had stayed a couple more nights!!

Do not hesitate to book here! Just be prepared for some confusion in finding the place and getting checked in.

Room Tip: Room # 7 was wonderful!!

We've found penzion Sobota completely by chance, just walking in the very nice Spisska Sobota area. Just looking at the house from the square, you can't imagine how peaceful and beautyfull it is. So quite, so out of time. Everything is lovely.
Of course do not expect 21st century comfort in the room, but just enjoy the place !
