Owner description: Open Air Museum of Lithuania is a unique and one of the largest (195 ha) open-air ethnographic museums in Europe. It has the biggest quantity of exhibits (90820 exhibits). The museum presents the mode of life, works, and traditions of peasants and townspeople of all Lithuanian ethnographic areas: Dzūkija, Aukštaitija, Suvalkija, Žemaitija and Lithuania Minor. It was established in 1966, in Rumšiškės on a picturesque coast of Kaunas Lagoon. There are fragments of the villages, authentic farms, century-old buildings with flower gardens, orchards and vegetable gardens, with crosses and wooden roofed poles, technical facilities - mills, forges, a fulling-mill and oil-mill lining along 7 km circular route, meandering between forests, meadows and hills. In the centre of the museum there is a fragment of a township with its typical buildings, where pots are shaped, amber and wood works are done and weaving process of linen is presented. The painful past of Lithuanian history is reminded in the sector of Deportation and Resistance. The guided tours, educational programs, calendar feasts, folk group concerts are being organized in the museum, horseback riding club.

“Worth to visit”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 25 July 2014

If you are in Kaunas it is worth to take one day to Rumsiskes. You can enjoy not just the houses but the nature too. On summer-time on Sunday you can go with boat from Kaunas. Boat trip is one hour and it is really wonderfull becasue around the lake everywhere is forest. (Boat ticket is a return ticket)
But if you are not so much interested about houses it is worth to go there for some event like Uzgavenes, Eastern etc. We were at Uzgavenes and it was really wonderfull. People dance, sang, there were a market and I ate the most wonderful pancake there!
Bad thing that there aren't so many information in English or any other language (just in Lithuanian) and you won't find maps anywhere. On your ticket you will find a little map and there will be board about the region but no map or direction how to go afterwards or where are you..

“One of the Best Open Air Museums”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 24 July 2014

This is one of the best open air museums which I have visited in Europe. The houses with their out buildings are set apart in spacious areas according to the regions of Lithuania that they represent. The park is extremely well maintained and the interior of the homes, barns and village museums give a clear view of life in Lithuania's past. Also, our tour arranged for us to meet an 80+ year old woman who was relocated to Siberia during the war. We met her at the rail car (used for deportation) exhibition and had an informative conversation.

“Great visit”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 14 June 2014

An informative visit to this historic location and certainly recommended for visitors to Kaunas to spend half a day wandering around a world of yesteryear. Life for Lithuanians prior to the Soviet union is on display in a genuine setting. The website states it is best visited by car and traveling there by public transport, as we did, certainly had its challenges.
We caught the 1pm minibus from platform 26 at the Kaunas central bus station to Rumsiskes 6 Lita (1.75 euro) one way. With no signage from the Rumsiskes bus station stand at the right side edge of the bus stop with your back to it and walk 150metres in a Northwest direction across a field and you will find a new road sealed in black asphalt (its the only one in the area) turn left and follow this road for approx 10minutes and the entrance to the park/museum is at the end. There are no footpaths but the road is wide and generally the only other traffic are visitors to the museum.
Hopefully the Museum and public transport will co-ordinate better directions to increase revenue for both entities and help tourists.

“Beautiful and Informative”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 5 June 2014

We visited the place as a group. Even though it was raining, we still loved it. Nice location, different villages spread in the woods; wooden buildings and small city with church really worth seeing.
