I only visited this place at night, on a hot summer night. I couldn´t get in, but it didn´t matter. From the outside, this cathedral is splendourous. I couldn´t stop taking photos !

Vilnius Cathedral is the most important place of worship for Catholics in Lithuania. It is a massive building with a stand alone belfry in front of the entrance. The Belfry was once part of the 13th C defensive wall around the city. It is 57m tall and it is open to visitors, the six bells chime on the hour. The Cathedral itself is rather plain inside. The current church is neo-classical in style and was built in 1419, on the site of a smaller 13th C chapel. Today some notable Lithuanians are buried here. The most attractive part is the chapel of Saint Casimir - the patron saint of Lithuania. If there is a service going on you won't be able to wander around though. At sunset the light pours through the entrance. Take a look on the roof as you enter. The three statues are of Saints Stanislaus, Helena and Casimir and represent Poland, Russia and Lithuania.

If I could tell anyone where to start or where to center their tourist activities in Vilnius, this would be the place. Gediminas Prospekt is out the front door, sort of Vilnius' main street. The Cathedral Tower is now open for you to ascend and get a sense of the city. There are excellent restaurants nearby. A few steps away you'll find Pilies Gatve, the main tourist street, as well as Vilnius University. This is the epicenter of tourism in Vilnius!

While the cathedral is beautiful and definitely worth a walk through, the visit going up the belfry which is just a few steps across the square from the cathedral is the highlight. There are fabulous views at the various levels and very steep staircases, some of which you need to go back down backwards. Definitely the highlight of our visit to Vilnius.

I have spent six month of Vilnius, but even if you will spend there less time it will be impossible not to pass in front of it less than three times a week, and once back home you will definetely miss its wonderful sight.
