If you want a real gem of a boutique first rate hotel, the Vingriai is for you. While it is not in the "heart" of Vilnius, it is only a short walk to all major sites. The best aspect of the hotel is its service. When we were there, the hotel was run by two suberb young women both of whose names happened to by Julia (pronounced Yulia in Lithanian). There was not enough, although we did not need much help, that they could do for us. They were extremely helpful in getting us information about bus times to Kaunus and also travel information from Kaunus to Riga. Their knowledge of English was excellent.
The hotel, itself, while only six rooms, is in a totally remodelled older building. Do no be put off by the somewhat seedy, but absolutely safe, street the hotel is on. The rooms are comfortable and more than adequate in size by European standards. They prepare a "to order" complete breakfast, which is included in the rate, in their breakfast/bar room on the first floor. I had heard (and sometimes experienced) that service in eastern Europe is not what it is in American or western European hotels. Nothing could be further than the truth at the Vingriai.
The rooms are on the second and third floor of the hotel (no lift).
We had their 'standard" room at the end of the third floor overlooking a small courtyard.
The hotel is three minutes from the only Jewish synagogue still in Vilnius (there once were 36!), about a nice 20 minutes walk from the KGB museum (not to be missed) and about 10 minutes
walk from the heart of the city.
The publication "Vilnius in Your Pocket" is a very useful guide to what is going on. We also ate a a lovely French restaurant, call St. Germain, in the heart of old town down a very narrow street with indoor and outdoor seating. Vilnius, right now is a charming friendly easily managable small city and not overrun by tourists. One of its jewels is the Vingriai. At about $ 120.00 per night with a very weak dollar, I thought this was good value and would recommend it if you like small hotels with individualized service.
