Attraction details
Owner description: The railway terminus with its intriguingly grand station building, constructed in the early 20th century to service the bustling resort town of Haapsalu, invites you to take a virtual journey back in time, accompanied by steam engine noises, to learn about the evolution of railways in Estonia spanning almost a century and a half. Here you can also see different methods of communicating information, from early telegraph and telephone devices to the wireless communications and television. Old locomotives and carriages made their final stop here and you can also come across a polite stationmaster and a skeleton telephone, or visit the old post office. This is all the Station, a place of arrivals and departures through the prism of the past.

“Old trains”
Reviewed 27 May 2014

When visiting Happsalu a visit to the old station should be included. Some old locomotives and trains are on show and the station itself is well kept.

“A nice way to while away half an hour”
Reviewed 2 September 2011

Gaudy with gingerbread, Haapsalu's disused railway station has been refitted as a museum containing, basically, nothing but itself. There are a few old locomotives, wagons and freight cars on the rails which kids love climbing on. The spacious scale of the place and olde worlde feel are reminders of Haapsalu's heyday as a spa town for Russian aristocrats before the Soviets let such fripperies slip into decay. The arches over the platform are weirdly reminiscent of a Japanese shrine.

The museum is close to the bus stop most visitors will arrive at, so it's handy to kill some time pleasantly while waiting for your bus on the way out.
