“Lovely hotel close to the center”
Reviewed 25 September 2011

The hotel is ideally placed for the old town. The rooms are very good and the breakfast was more than adequate. We ate one night in the hotel restaurant which was also good.
I would recommend this hotel.
Note to owner/manager:
Your head receptionist really does need to learn the term 'Service with a smile'. Although I am sure she is most efficient her manner is rude and borders on intimidating.
Any question is answered with a one word answer as though you are stupid for even asking and although I at first thought this could a culture barrier other members of staff were not like this.
An example: If one arrives prior to 2pm which is the official check in time a little help would not go amiss. Whilst one accepts that the rooms may well not be ready suggestions such as please would you like a coffee or the old town is just up that road there would be very welcoming. We were greeted with the word ‘Two’ and nothing else meaning that the room would not be ready until then. We were not even told where we could leave our bags until our room was available we had to ask. This was not a language problem as the lady speaks English very well. A shame really because apart from this lady and her attitude everything else at the hotel was great.

Our room experience was a pleasant one for the most part. We had a split reservation that had us checking out and then checking back in a couple of days later while we explored another area in Estonia. The first room was very nice and the air conditioner worked well. The second time we had an adequate room but the air conditioner did not work properly and there was a peculiar smell in the bathroom area that I liken to animal decomposition. I heard 2 other people complain of the same thing. This smell was not present in the first room we had, which was in an adjacent building, the other room was in the main part. One thing that impressed me tremendously is that the staff allowed us to leave our heaviest luggage there is a storage space while were were gone to another location (for a wedding in a nearby town) allowing us to travel more lightly.

The breakfast buffet exceeded my expectations - very good selection of pastries, cereals, fruit, yogurt, eggs, bacon, sausage - just lovely.

One can easliy walk into Old Town - which is simply magical. The location is a big plus. The only advice I can offer is to suggest one look at the room first before actually checking into it if it is located in the main building.

Though on a fairly busy corner (ask for a quiet room if you'r a bit allergic to traffic noise) - this Hotel is really well placed for a short break to Tallinn. The excellent 90K bus (2 Euros) runs directly to and from the Airport, only a 15 minute journey, from the nearby Hotel Tallinn, just across the road from the Stackelberg, though it stops operating at 18:30. (The new Airport Shuttle service is a good second-choice, 5 Euros) The Hotel itself has super English-speaking staff, the rooms are beautifully clean and the outside Courtyard provides jazz-style entertainment at the weekend. The food was tasty and for the solo traveller, it's an excellent place to eat without feeling "Billy-no-mates". There's a good spread at Breakfast, all you could want including traditional fried-stuff. As usual though, lukewarm water for tea and a rather feeble cereal selection is a slight disappointment, as was the Tea/coffee basket in the room.

Room Tip: Ground/first-floor front rooms are prone to traffic noise, ask for quieter at the back.

I was a bit concerned about choice of hotel after reading a few Trip Advisor reviews. However, staying for 7 nights we had no problems with the Hotel at all. It is a beautifully restored old building, a short walk up a gentle hill directly opposite the Hotel entrance takes you to the old town and another short walk takes you to the train and bus station. Our room was a Zen room although we only paid the basic tariff, the room was spacious enough for three and backed on to the court yard. Despite being a bar area the court yard was quiet, even the live music over two nights, gentle Jazz that finished at 10.30 was not a problem, on the contary enjoyable. The buffet breakfast had plenty of choice and was in nice surroundings. The airport transfer was smooth and any information requested from reception was prompt and accurate. The bar and restaurant provided great service and decent value for money. While in the city I looked at a few alternative Hotels I had considered, they offered no great advantage in location and when I return to Tallin The Von Stackelberg will be my first choice as it provides excellant value ( we paid just under 60 uk pounds per night ).

Room Tip: Our Zen room was great, but did not see a standard room with which to compere.

This is an excellent hotel - an ideal base for exploring Tallinn. It's a tasteful, stylish conversion ideal for couples and romantic getaways.

The hotel is just five minutes away from the old town and the station (the latter providing various bus and tram connections - useful if you want to explore further afield).

There are hotels based right in the centre of the old town, but if you're like me and prefer being away from the hustle and bustle (without being miles out of town) then this is an ideal solution.

We stayed in a Zen Deluxe room, and paid about 100 Euros a night (or thereabouts), having booked six months in advance. At this price, we received excellent value for money. The room was amazing - a really impressive conversion. The bed was very comfortable, and the bathroom was well-equipped and spotlessly clean.

The buffet breakfast was well presented and tasty, with a good selection of items to choose from. The restaurant and bar are very attractive, and the food in the hotel was of a decent quality whilst not being over-priced (a refreshing change).

The staff were reasonably friendly and helpful (some much more than others), and the room service was OK. No awards for customer service, but nothing really to complain about here. Incidentally, the spa is excellent, and the staff here were particularly friendly and helpful.

Some rooms overlook a main road, but with double glazing etc it really isn't a problem. Though if you're concerned I would suggest booking early & requesting a rear-facing room. Also, if you're travelling mid-summer I would suggest bringing an eye mask (very little proper darkness at this time of year).

All-in-all, I think you'd be hard pushed to find a better mid/top-price hotel in Tallinn. Try and find a deal and stretch to the Zen Deluxe if you can - it's definitely worth it.

The Von Stackelberg Hotel did do what we expected. It's got some charm in it even the design is a bit so and so.

Rooms were tidy and fairly spacious. We had Zen room with jacuzzi (although that was not used), the other room in our group was Zen Deluxe, which was even a bit more spacious than ours.

We did use the hotel bar services on the court yard. Food was okay although the wine selection was pretty limited.

What was nice in the hotel was the sauna department which you could rent with modest fee for you only. There was even a small pool for chilling between after hot sauna.

All in all it was okay experience. Nothing really bad to say about the hotel. I cannot call it a design one, but it was charming small hotel with okay service and nice room.

Room Tip: book zen or zen deluxe from court yard side

This hotel was my entry hotel in Estonia. The location is perfect as it is just barely out of Old Town and the massive tourist crowds therein and is situated by a quiet park but close to public transport. The staff and available services were impeccable. The room was clean, comfortable and calm.

One thing: Give that Tallinn is in the northern climes and the days are long in June, blackout curtains or shades on the windows would have been appreciated. This is a lack I found though out Estonia and Finland. Curious as to why? In any case, would definitely stay here again.
