Description: Kloostri Ait Restaurant has been operating in Vene Street, the Old Town of Tallinn, since 1994. Like the mediaeval granary building for which it is named, the establishment has had a colourful history full of changes. Intimate in the evenings, when the warm colours come to life, Kloostri Ait is no less cosy during the day, when it makes a good stop for lunch. The spacious dining area is well-ventilated and there is plenty of room for guests with baby carriages or wheelchairs. At weekends, live ensembles perform. Kloostri Ait welcomes both established and young artists onstage.

We intended to eat elsewhere but changed our minds & wandered around the familiar old town streets, peering in restaurants & looking at menus displayed outside. Lucky for us we did go wandering!
What a find Kloostri Ait was! Having been drawn into the warm spacious dining room, with a huge open fire blazing we settled at a table of our choice. Comfortable armed chairs with a cushion at your back. Candles created wonderful lighting dotted around the room, between plants on beautiful wrought iron holders.
Our waitress was delightful, friendly, helpful and smiled a great deal! The food was superb in every way.....lamb chops, chicken kiev ...... very special indeed. Hotter plates would have preferred, but apart from this, no complaints at all.
A definite recommendation during any time spent in Tallinn.

We visited in a very quiet period for Tallinn, early February. Our hotel recommended this restaurant so we tried it on our first night but found it was only opening Thursday - Saturday.
Fortunately we tried again on Thursday. Not only was it a splendid building but the food and service were first class too. The food was both plentiful and (for Tallinn Old Town) relatively inexpensive.
Had it been open on Monday we might have been back every night.

Situated close to the Hotel Telegraaf, this is a relaxing place whetehr you want just a drink, a coffee or a 3-course meal. Rocking chairs by an open fire are a nice touch. Food and wine wer good, but the service was a bit slow, bearing in mind the place wasn't full.

That's my wife's word, not mine; but yes, it was. This restaurant shares a common wall with a very old monastery (turned museum) into which you can look from the dining room. The entrance is off Vene near Katariina käik (St. Catherine's Passage). We explore new restaurants in Old Town on Thursdays, and being from American farming roots, we eat very early in the evening. On this particular visit we had our pick of tables from those that didn't already have reservation cards on them (about half the tables did). Everything about this restaurant is "really good" ... the menu selection, the wine list, the decor, the staff, the presentation, and the pacing of the courses, seriously, "really good"; absolutely nothing wrong with that. Americans take note, they will serve you a pitcher of tap water with lemon in it (Yes, it's a big deal). If you order the homemade onion rings, tell them you would like them "crispy". The bill was a pleasant surprise, being about 15 EU each for a 3 course meal. On some cold snowy evening in the near future we will once again visit Kloostri Ait for another "really good" dinner.

As you walk along the street, this restaurant is easy to miss, since from the outside it is quite unimposing and does not have sidewalk tables outside luring you like a few of the others do just down the street - but we stepped inside Kloostri Ait to enjoy great food, and relaxed local atmoshere for a very pleasant lunch for the 4 of us - the staff were very attentive, although a little shy, possibly because of the langauge difference. We each had and enjoyed local dishes.

Even in summer, the firewood was stacked ready for the coming winter and we suspect that the large fireplace is a winter attraction. I wouldn't hesitate to go back again.
