“Pleasant guesthouse”
Reviewed 12 July 2013

We spent 4 nights here this month. The guesthouse is a little outside the old town but we walked to the centre in about 20 (brisk) minutes one evening. Otherwise there's a tram which goes directly to town in about 10 minutes (about 2 mins from the guesthouse). Yevgeny and Mai-Liis both very helpful and forthcoming with information. Took advantage of pick-up service from the airport - Yevgeny was waiting for us when we arrived and the cab was cheaper than it would've been otherwise. Rooms are basic but quaint and perfectly serviceable. We'd definitely stay here again.

If you are bored with standard issue accommodation consider here! The house is wooden (see pictures on website to get a better idea) and gave our short break a greater sense of occasion. It was lovely coming back each evening to candles and the stove in the shared parts downstairs.

We also had a stove in our room and the room was extremely cosy, even though the temperature went as low as minus 5 outside. We managed to get the stove hot enough to fry eggs on it one morning. The rest of the time we just used the electric ring provided. Free coffee and tea.

As well we had one of the rooms with a toilet in the room which was convenient, although we did pop in the shared toilet once or twice and can say that(see previous reviews) it is now warm!

Mai-Liis and Yevgeni were lovely hosts, Mai-Liis with very good English and she was able to give a number of useful tips on where to go. The guest house is convenient for the Old Town with frequent buses (no 5 seemed the most frequent) and trams (3 and 4).

Room Tip: Ask for a stove

Thank you dear guests!!

In some of the rooms we have preserved the old stoves as additional heating-system! They share the feeling of being in the countryside, where your grandmother has made pancakes early in the morning on a stove: you could see and hear the fire cracking.. The atmosphere and warmth is so much more different, when you can heat yourself: take the woods, make the fire..

Of cource there are also electric-heaters provided, in case you do not have time for making the fire yourself.
Even in "Attic Chambre`s" it is possible to stay in winter, when temperatures go down until -10degrees: there we have 2 electric heaters, which give the room the necessary warmth: you just have to turn them on.

I am especially happy, that you tried the chance to make yourself breakfast on the old stove! With lots of thankfulness and good wishes!! Mai-Liis

We have found this place while looking for a rather cost-friendly but yet comfortable and not very far from Tallinn city center apartment. It was not easy as either you have large flats for accommodation of four or more guests, or apartments quite far from Old Tallinn in new districts of the town. Martha Guest House satisfied us on almost every aspect:
— It is situated not very far from the Old Town — the house stays close to tram line and it takes only 10-12 mins. to get to the Old Town on tram nr. 4. You can also use the same tram line to get to central bus station on Lastakodu Str., which is also very helpful if you travel to Tallinn by bus. There is a small 24-hour shop next to the tram stop so you can always buy necessary things and basic food even when all other shops are closed, which is good if you happen to arrive to the place in the night or late evening. The district of Martha Str. where the guesthouse is situated is calm and quiet, you can have no worry about getting into it late evening.
— They have all necessary basic cooking wire which was also very helpful as we prefer to cook ourselves.
— It is possible to agree on the arrival time that suits you depending on the time you arrive to or leave Tallinn. If your room is free, you can, upon agree with the hostess, arrive before usual check-in hour 12 o’clock or leave later, or, arrive in late evening.
— The price is not that high compared to other places of the same sort you can find in Tallinn. Either you can find an hotel, not apartment, or a flat, but the price for the flat is usually higher which makes sense if you travel with a company of 4-5 persons.
The guesthouse itself is a rather small wooden house built at the beginning of the 20th c. and is a rare today example of living wooden house where most tallianns lived in the 19th and first half of the 20th cc. Thus the place has a retro vintage look — a marked feature that the owners of the house try to preserve and develop. You will find a collection of various vintage items in the interior of the house which make it very charming as if you find yourself back in time somewhere in 1950s. And, of course, live fire — candles, oil lamps, and small fireplace which you can use to heat the room or simply light to enjoy the sound of burning logs. However, you must understand it, you will not thus find here many modern services and things which you usually get in a modern hotel. This is the positive side for people who would like to stay in a really vintage place, calm and quiet, and the negative side for people who would prefer something modern and up-to-date and with more service.
The house is a family property and is run by a very charming couple of young Estonians — Mai-Liis and Evgeny. They try to make the place as a real guesthouse, not a hotel, and surround you with real family warm, which is, of course, very pleasant. They try to make everything that you were pleased and happy while your stay and are very positive in every way.
We liked the place so much that returned there again the second time during our next trip to Tallinn and will of course return there again.

Room Tip: Order room with a fireplace which comfort and joy

Thank you dear guests! I am very happy to read, that you have valued the most important features, which the little house can offer. Our goal is to preserve the traditional old house in its natural shape: not to "over-renovate" it, but step-by-step with lot of love try to make all, what is necessary, to keep the feeling!

There are also "Attic Chambreś", which share the feeling of being an artist or writer: living as in old days under the roof, dreaming and being creative! As the house is not very big, there is usually quiet, and also the people, who stay here, are very nice, intelligent and a little "artistic-minded" in a most positive way! Guests have usually made some research and already know, why they have chosen a bit different place to stay: to experience warm loving touch, which the house gives! For us receiving guests in this house is not work, but Life & very dear Hobby!

Spasibo ogromnoe!!! Welcome again and again! Also in summer (or spring)!
