“Nice hotel”
Reviewed 12 January 2007

I stayed at the Radisson SAS hotel in Jan. It is very well located to the centre of the city and a short walk to old town. The rooms are clean and nicely furnished. A good buffet breakfast was included in the hotel rate. The is one big minus to the hotel and that is why I have given it the rating I have. Smoking is permitted in the Lobby and in the restaurnat and bars. The smell of smoke is everywhere in the public areas, and it is not pleasant. Even though I was on a non smoking floor, ash trays were placed near the evlevator and guests were smoking like chimneys prior to getting into the elevators, thereby making the elevators smell of smoke. If there is to be a non smoking floor then the ash trays should be taken away. This hotel is very group oriented also. Would I stay again, perhaps, but if I found a hotel that was non smoking I would probably take it over the Radisson.

It's a typical modern Radisson Hotel; the rooms are nice, clean, well designed and comfortable. Very nice views from the rooms and the bar on top. Well located, close to the old town, shopping, cinemas, opera etc. The breakfast buffet is very good; but avoid the restaurant for dinner, much to expensive for what is offered. There are a lot of good restaurants in the old town.

The staff may seem a bit reserved, which may be taken as unfriendly; but this is actually typical for the Estonians. They very helpful and friendly to me; the only exception was the bell man, whom I had to ask several times to get some taxis while people where waiting outside in the freezing November cold.

This high-rise hotel has one of the best views in Tallinn. Its a new hotel built in 2001, clean and modern rooms and facilities. In the summer "Lounge 24" bar in the rooftop offers stunning views. Buffet breakfast has a wide selection of warm and cold dishes. Location is also quite handy, about half a kilometer from the old town gate. Viru shopping center, Kaubamaja&Stockmann department stores are located even closer.

The Radisson is a perfect 10 minute walk from the Old Town - close enough to enjoy this World Heritage Site but far enough away to avoid late night noise.

What's unique about this particular hotel is Lounge 24 - a rooftop bar with an outside terrace giving the most stunning views of the Old Town and Port. An absolute must at sunset.

Like all Radisson's I've stayed in the rooms are a generous size, and the bathrooms well-designed. The service is efficient and friendly, if a little reserved. But not everyone here speaks perfect English - and why should they?

SAS Radisson may be the best or one of the 2-3 best available choices in Tallinn, but this does not mean that it is really a top hotel. I used a business room, which was more spacious, had better view and more amenities than a standard room (incl. bathrobe and slippers). The hotel is quite new and the bathroom nice, but it's obvious that the hotel itself does not want to offer anything beyond the 4-star service. They are supposed to offer evening cleaning service, but their standard of cleaning service in the morning is quite low: they do not empty the trash every day (only every second day), they do not change used towels and they do not even touch the towel rug on the floor (they leave it there!). Even in the "business" rooms the supposedly rich amenities do not include sewing kit, body milk, conditioner, nail kit or cotton and cotton tubs. The carpet is clean, but of poor quality, while room temperature could not be adjusted. Furthermore, electricity was provided by the cardkey (following a policy of many resort hotels, but not business city hotels that claim to be 5star). Regarding their breakfast, it was not of a 5star quality, as there was no warm bread-like thing (you could only toast your bread,, but the rest was not really fresh)anywhere and no croissants. Their service at the restaurant (used also as breakfast room) was poor, they did not offer to do but only the absolutely necessary and smiles were literally inexistent. Their standard lunch buffet was poor and they had a strange policy of having water pre-served in the glasses and left on the table before customers' seating (that obviously saves them time!). In general, they never go out of their way to help you. All their 3 salads on their standard lunch buffet were around seafood -- no really vegetarian salad, which was very difficult for me who am allergic to seafood!
And one more tip regarding this hotel: They price in Euro and send confirmation of prices in Euro, but when it comes to payment, they ask for 10% more if currency other than Kroon (their local currency) is used. They say that they have legitimate reason for that, as Euro or Dollars are not their currency, but then why do they confirm prices in Euro? On the one hand they hedge their pricing against risk of their currency's devaluation and on the other they use that way to bring you in a situation of having to pay the 10%extra when you have no possibility to go out to exchange when you check out (when it's possibly no banking hour or have no time). My reason to recommend this hotel would only be the fact that you can hardly find something better in Tallinn and that it is not far from the old town (10 minutes walk). But there is nothing to recommend in their services, and their prices are quite high; if one considers the country's price level (which is relatively low) and their level of service, the prices look rather excessive.

I've just spent 2 nights here and agree with all the recent positive reports.

I was given a room on the 19th floor, with a great view over towards the Old Town. The hotel is ideal to walk across to all the Old Town sights and is very modern, quiet and comfortable. Good buffet breakfast.

Anyone staying here between now and the end of March should be aware that the ground floor bar/lounge is currently being renovated and is boarded off.
