Just returned from a trip to Tallinn, and after considering lots of options decided to give the Pirita 'Top Spa' Hotel a go, staying there for 4 nights.
Let me start with the location. The hotel is located just out of the centre along the coast at Pirita, to reach it it is no more than a 20 minute bus journey from Viru Keskus - the main station - buses 34A, 1A, 8 take you to stop 'Rummukõrtsi' (for the Supermarket and the back and side of hotel) or 'Rummu', which is the nearest in my opinion, takes you 200yds or so to the front of the hotel.
Okay, the hotel boasts decent views of the marina beach and bay(we even got a good sunset out of it last Sunday),a swimming pool with about 4-5 saunas and Salt chamber(which was closed) and lots of various massages available (at extra cost of course) that I were never going to go in for; but past that it was a struggle to find anything else to say good about the place.
'A basic family number' is how someone described it, and that sounds about right. Full of Scandinavian and Russian families at that. The hotel lobby on arrival reminded me of an Airport departure lounge; complete with kids running about the place and riding around on scooters, parents screaming like hell & members of staff who clearly felt the pandemonium they were in the middle of with their abruptness and unfriendlyness, but for whatever reason unwilling to improve the situation for other guests at the Hotel. Take the woman in the lobby shop - was it my fault she got out of bed the wrong side when a Tourist enters who doesnt know the place and asks a few questions about specialites of the area and so forth? Perhaps the General Manager should take note and enrol his staff on a few customer care courses..
We booked a Marine Class room, room 203, and at first thought it was a spa class. The room was quite run down, shabby carpets and 'aged' bathroom however clean nonetheless. The heating didnt work (I know it is Summer but during our stay it was cold wet and windy) no fridge or kettle was available that I reqested on the Booking (that hotels ALWAYS recieve through the website I booked with) although before our arrival I was in regular contact with the hotel who informed me theyd recieved my request and would consider it.
The breakfast, if you could call it that, was a poor effort. The same things every day, a disgusting hot ,bland and unfresh selection of chicken nuggets, sausages, fried and boiled potatoes, the most disgusting scrambled egg youre likely to have in your life(that resembled custard cake) and something that did look like scrambled egg but was some cold slop of egg butter. Suffice to say, having tried a little of it on my first day it resulted in me being Ill for a while after that. For the rest of the stay I ate toast and jam, even the toaster didnt look interested it took forever to toast, washed down with a fruit tea or a coffee.
A trip to the pool wasnt without its concerns either; Does no-one wipe the pool area regularly and watch the pool area? As I wanted to go to the Sauna, I had to watch every step as I slowly slowly pattered around the pool for fear of slipping and banging or worse still, breaking something. This has been mentioned in previous reviews and clearly is an issue but obviously the hotel doesnt care.
So, all in all, a big disappointment, and not really representing value for money at all. Next time I visit Tallinn Im sure I could find something somewhere else for the same price or less, that serves even an average breakfast with something fresh on the buffet, a pool area that isnt a swamp, a lobby area without kids out of control and staff who for whatever reason are just a bunch of misery guts.
