Exellent hotel. Loved the room, with an amazing view from the 19th floor. Saw the whole old city, and harbour. Good beds, nice breakfast, and good service. The spa was a bit expensive, but practial, since it was next to the breakfasthall .The food in the mexican restaurant was amazing. Very pleased with my stay with Sokos! :)

We have stayed in this hotel many times and never been disappointed. This visit was good too. We had my son's family from Canada with us and had three rooms, all superior. The only problem was the rooms were a little too warm this time. The breakfast included in the room price is very comprhensive with literally everything you might want.

Room Tip: Superior rooms don't cost a lot more and we feel they are worth the extra cost, but standard are...

I traveled with my friend and we both are used to sleep with open window during the summer, so it was a bit hard for us to sleep on 17th floor were the only "fresh air" came through air conditioner and there was no way to open the window. I undesrtand that it might be dangerous on 17th floor but they could make a tiny window what to open :-D But otherwise hotel is in very good location, beautiful view from window, beds are nice, everything clean, coffee in bar very good. Not during breakfast :-) We didnt have time to visit KGB museum but in the coridors and especially during breakfast you cas still feel the sence of Soviets :-) Its more busineess people hotel.

Our friends booked us a room at Hotel Viru because we would see the hotel from anywhere in Tallin, and wouldn't get lost. It's true. It's not the prettiest architecture, entrance or lobby, but it's welcoming nonetheless.

We arrived before check-in, and they checked our bags for free. Clean public restrooms are accessible to all.

Location very close to old town.

After our day's outing, we spent an hour with friends in the lobby - a place I really loved. Large brown leather club chairs face each other (two face two) across a generous coffee table. Old school. Bar had great drinks (alcoholic, non-alcoholic, coffee) at affordable prices.

We were offered an upgrade for 20 euro at the time of check-in, but we opted to see our room first. Ours was a simple double. Very clean, charming. The design was 1960s and cool. It had a warm feel to it - almost like everything should be worn, but it wasn't (except for the bed, which was the only thing in the room that really felt like it had had it's day. Good sleep regardless.)

We decided to see what the upgrade would look like, and here's where things got really interesting. They brought us to the 16th floor and showed us this thoroughly renovated queen room with a sea view to die for. High design, lots of space. 20 euro upgrade?! Yes Please!!! There were also rooms with saunas for 40 euro more. Unbelievable. I woke up my husband, packed up our things, and asked for the upgrade -- but the room we were shown was no longer available. And we were happy with our simple double. Crazy fun.

Free breakfast buffet was fine. Lots of people from off cruise lines.

Checked our bags again after checkout for another day in Tallin.

We would absolutely go back to Hotel Viru.

Room Tip: Ask for a room on the 16th floor with a sea view.

The hotel itself is in a good location and the room is basic. The breakfast buffet is really good with a wide choice of food and it is till 11:00 am.
Hotel employees will never smile and will not solve your problems - they are too tired and it seems like they are in the hotel for the last day. Be careful with the parking in front of the hotel, pay if you already have parked and don't want to drive somewhere else, becouse if you loose your parking lot and all others will be full, they will not give your money back, but will send you to another parking area for extra costs.
Breakfast is great, will I come back-NO.

Room Tip: try to get rooms on top floors

Viru Hotel is an institution, at least for us Finns.
Books has been written about it (well, at least one), documents has been made about it (at least one) and it housed KGB's secret radio center that used to spy on the hotels quests during the Soviet era. This former center has now been turned into an KGB museum.

We have visited Viru Hotel twice for separate short trips.
Centrally located: Just accross the street is the old town, just below you feet is the shopping center with legendary Kaubamaja, the ferry terminals are just 15-20 minutes walk away.
Affordable: You can also get quite good deals from the ferry businesses.
Spacious rooms: The rooms are quite basic by decor but there is more space than for what we have used to and the view from upper rooms is quite nice.
Breakfast: Buffet breakfast has plenty of choices.

Actually the only bad things to say about this hotel is that checking-in might take some time if you happen to be arriving with busloads of other tourists and the elevators might get quite packed as well. And it is somewhat quite impersonal, even with it's history and status.

We stayed for just a weekend, arriving on the Friday morning quite early. Our luggage was safely put away in a locked room while we went for a walk and waited for check in. You can see the old town entrance from the front of the hotel and it only a one minute walk across the park to be in the Old Town.
When we did go to check in the queues were immense and looks quite daunting, but actually we were on our way to our room in less than ten minutes. The same was true when checking out. yes, it looks like everyone in the whole hotel is checking in and out at the same time as you, but you will be dealt with quickly.
Our room was the highest floor you can be on, without going into the museum. Don't look down! The view from our window, and also from the smoking balcony outside our door was mind blowing (see pics)! I know people say you can smell the smoke inside your room, but our room opened opposite the door to the smoking balcony and I couldn't smell anything. Maybe if I opened the door at exactly the same time as someone was coming off the balcony, but definitely not inside the room
I found the staff on reception to be very pleasant and helpful, all very smart and professional too. The staff in the bar and the Pubi were not quite so nice but there's no reason to drink there anyway as it's expensive compared to the old town just one minute away.
We always book hotels based on location, it's the main thing for us, so this was absolutely perfect. We walked to the harbour in about 15 minutes for our day trip to Helsinki and had the old town and shopping centre literally on our doorstep.
We slept well, we were treated well, and got everything we expected and needed from staying at the Sokos Viru. Recommended

Room Tip: Higher up, harbour side!
