“Nice visit”
Reviewed 9 October 2013

It is about 10 years since I stayed at Hotel Viru. Now travelling with friends decided to try it again
because it is near The Old Town and Estonian operahouse. The hotel was a pleasant suprise.
It is huge in size, but very clean, friendly staff and breakfast was good. Although there are lots of
people having their breakfast and you really have to take your time to find the food, coffee etc.
Happened to find the museum tour to the KGP quarters at the top floor, which was really
intersesting. The lady who was guiding the tour was exellent - I really recommend this if you
want to know more about the "good" old soviet times.

Dear Eila L,
We are happy to hear that You have enjoyed staying in our hotel – we are really glad to have You here! We have lots of visitors, who have stayed here 10, 20 or even 40 years ago and it is our pleasure to surprise them with totally new rooms or other new services. We have to renew our hotel all the time – and still talk about legendary stories in our museum, we are proud of our excellent guides, as You also mentioned. Estonia Opera-house is our good neighbour and we have good cooperation. In Tallinn there is always something happening, and we could suggest different museums like Art Museum KUMU or unique Maritime museum or classical music concerts or … Next time we are happy to suggest You something to see or to go to.
Welcome back, we are just 2 hours from Helsinki!
Sincerely Yours
Anu

Built during the Moscow olympic games in the 80's to host the regatta sailing teams in Tallinn, this Estonian hotel - large and high rise - is typically a conference hotel. Don't expect and cosy corners, boutique style reception area, rather what you expect, well from a hotel that hosts big events. For a small extra 20 euros I could upgrade to a "business" room. Good thing: it has its own sauna (if you know how it works, it didn't have a manual in or outside the sauna cabin). Overall: Soso: no thrills in the rather "austere" rooms, wooden floor with a rather non descript interior and some unimaginative "art" (more the equivalent of "muzak" in music), a bathroom that consists of neutral white tiles with a greyish flloor. Don't expect anything like lotion, shampoo or any other personal care products (I forgot my toothpaste, I was asked to come downstairs to the lobby to collect it myself). No luxury but everything that makes a one night business stay a carefree experience. But nothing more. Had the bad luck when checking out to stand behing 200 elders who lined up to check in. Sleepquality was good, actually had a room at the end of the hallway on the 20th floor (out of 22 floors). On the second floor is a late conference room with the entry to an adjacent shopping mall.

The hotel has a very decent restaurant for dinner. The breakfast however is in a room that has strong reminders of a old Russian style conference hall with large tables and single coloured conference chairs, with tapestry that would be better suited in an out-of-date seniors home. Depressing. All in all decent but old and unimaginative, a thorough update would be good.

Room Tip: 2012 business room, end of the hall, high floor

Dear guest,
Thank You for staying in our hotel and for Your detailed feedback! We are happy to see, that we think about the same improvements what should be done – these will be done very soon. Next 180 hotel-rooms will be renovated in the beginning of next year and totally renewed restaurant will be open doors already in the end of February. We have got many important tips from Your comments and these will be taken as guidelines for our work. Thank You!
Our hotel has been built even before the Olympic, it was open in 1972 as the first “skyscraper” in Estonia and we tell the story of our past in the first hotel museum “Hotel Viru and the KGB”. We still are the biggest hotel in Estonia by the amount of rooms. Of course, the size is not the point to stay in our hotel and for us every guest is unique and individual person, we try hard to fulfil every guests expectations.
We really hope to see You as our guest also next time You visit Tallinn and offer You totally new experiences. Fortunately it is easy to get from Amsterdam to Tallinn, and from Tallinn airport it takes only 10 minutes to come to our hotel!
Welcome back!
Sincerely Yours
Anu

I visited Tallinn, Estonia after a long time in September. The Sokos Hotel Viru is nice and clean and the check-in was fast and friendly. The room was large (two doubles) as I was by myself in the room. The night club was rather empty in the evening but the prices were moderate, and the breakfast next morning very ample and tasty.

Can't say much about the value as my work place paid for the room, but my guess would be that it is good value for money.

Dear guest,
Thank You for staying in our hotel and for Your kind feedback! It is encouraging to read that our aim to serve by high class standards has been noticed. Our nightclub is open 7 nights a week, and in the beginning (at 22) there is really not much people. As it is one of the few nightclubs open all week, usually people have their after-parties there, as it is open for long till morning hours. So the nightlife starts usually from about midnight, and for hotel guests it is free.
In business trip, of course, it is difficult to find time for everything. However, we hope next time we meet You as our guest also in leisure trip – Tallinn has lot to offer as for business also for leisure.
Welcome back, whether alone, with family or with friends! (Your company was right, our prices are good value for money.)
Sincerely Yours
Anu

The Sokos Viru sits on the doorstep on Old Tallinn. Staff and friendly with fluent English (multi-lingual in fact) and a desire to make your stay in Tallinn as pleasant as possible. The rooms are well equipped with nice touches such as bottled water every day, tea & coffee facilities and a mini bar.
We chose a superior double room and found it excellent value for money. There is free wifi throughout (in fact there is wifi access - often free - throughout the city) I am due to return here on for business in late November and would have no hesitation about booking here again.

Few hotels host a museum - this one has a museum which is a hangover from a previous era. It is fascinating to learn how people lived and worked during this period and how the hotel has evolved since Estonia has gained its independence.

Room Tip: superior rooms are well equipped with all a business traveller requires. Ask for a sea view which ma...

Dear guest,
We are so grateful for Your kind words! It is very encouraging to see, that our peoples good work has been noticed. You are right about WIFI – it seems to be the human right issue in Estonia, we just must to have the access to internet for free everywhere:).
There will be held next Black Night Film Festival from Nov 15th to Dec 1th, if You are found of cinema art, then You could combine business with excellent program of movies. There is, of course, much more happening in Tallinn all the time, so we sincerely hope to meet You again as the guest of our hotel!
Welcome back!
Sincerely Yours

I participated at a congress in this hotel, and the overall impression is good. The service is not very personal, as many guests, tourists and business people are here and the staff seems sometimes a bit stressed, however the service is ok and meeting the basic requirements quite well.
If you wish to stay in the hotel, ask for a room in the upper floors with view to the old town: the wonderful view equals possibly bad experiences.

Dear guest,
Thank You for Your feedback! We enjoy the most thrilling views over our beautiful city as well. Tallinn is always different – day or night, Winter or Summer, sunny or rainy. We hope You’ll find time to visit our beautiful city again and find its secrets of different seasons. Our hotel is the biggest conference hotel in Estonia, so the amount of visitors may be really big. But as every guest is unique and individual person, we try hard to fulfil every guests expectations exactly as they have hoped. I’m sorry to hear that staff seemed a bit stressed. Hard work may make us sometime to forget the smile, but inside – please be very sure in it – we enjoy to serve our guests. Hope You'll enjoy staying in Viru also next time!
Sincerely Yours
Anu

Nice, centrally located hotel. Just ten minute drive from the airport . Contrary to some of the reviews here I found the hotel staff to be courteous. I had a standard room on the 20th floor which offered a super view of the roof tops of the old town, domes and spires as well as of the harbour and the cruise ships. Loved looking on to it all.. The room is fairly small but adequate. Room had a hair dryer and iron ( no ironing board though). Standard rooms however do not come with tea/ coffee making facilities. This is a bit inconvenient since the hotel does not have a 24 hour room service. You can call the restaurant up when it is open. After the first day I called the reception and requested a kettle, tea, coffee etc. They obliged after a bit of persuasion. Breakfast was excellent. The few meals I had in the restaurant were also good.

The medieval old town is just five minutes away. St Catherine's Passage with its interesting craft shops maybe just a ten minute walk. The harbour where you could board cruise ships to Helsinki is also in close vicinity of the hotel. A shopping mall with the usual European Brands is linked to the hotel through a short passage. There is a small restaurant in there, as you enter the mall from the hotel which serves a decent , very reasonably priced meal. Would certainly stay there again.

Room Tip: Higher you go the better the view. Standard rooms are not very spacious. Ok for single occupancy but...

This huge hotel in a perfect location. It's a 5 min walk to the beautiful old town.It doesn't feel like a 4 star as the bedroom decor/furniture is tiny bit rough around the edges, but its fine and the rooms are spacious. The beds are clean and comfortable.
The Bathroom is clean and has bath ,which we needed as we has have 2 young children. We were delighted with the toiletries for the kids.Little tubes of dinosaur bubble bath, crocodile shaped soaps ,little bath toys.
The staff are friendly and speak good English.the facilities are good. The Breakfast is very good, great selection,to suit all nationalities and tastes. The hotel backs onto a shopping mall.It has a really good supermarket in the basement handy for stocking up in wine etc ...whatever yu need. There is a KGB Museum at the top of the hotel,if you fancy it.The views of Tallinn are great from the top .This hotel is good for all groups of travellers.Families, lone travellers etc.

Dear guest,
Thank You for Your kind words. We are huge:), the biggest in Estonia. We also know that it is not the point for a single client or a family to stay here – but excellent service and cosy rooms are the good reason and this is where we try to make our biggest effort. Glad to provide it to Your nice family. Welcome back!
