Had a Junior Suite with sauna booked for 1 night on the 17th floor. Location is great, and the view from our room was nice. Sauna was small but ok for 2 adults.

Reception staff was friendly and service-minded, breakfast was a very typical buffet and room service was very efficient (which was great as we were super hungry).

The Suite itself is more like a Superior room with sauna - it was the size of a regular room. Not sure why it's called a suite but didn't bother us much as it was still ok :) Bathroom could use renovation and a new hairdryer and would be amazingly great to have shampoo & conditioner in the bathroom since this was a junior suite after all. Other than that we were happy with our stay.

It's a rear occasion to stay overnight in a hotel at your hometown. But this time it happened and I'm quite about it.
The hotel is iconic to Estonians being the first high standard hotel built in Soviet era. There are several stories about this hotel and you may visit the KGB museum in the hotel to learn more about them.

The location can't be more central. Old town just across the street, passanger harbour 10 min walk, airport 10 minutes by taxi, shopping mall attached to the hotel etc.

It is a big (22 floors) tourist hotel with all it's pros and cons. The lobby area is not huge and therefore cozy. Service at the desk is fast and friendly. If you can afford, upgrade yourself to superior room and you'll get a really nice and big room which in some countries could be called junior suite. Ask for seaview room upstairs (15th and up) and you will get fantastic views on the old town and harbour.
As said the room is spacious, well furnished in scandinavian style with very comfortable beds. Of course you have flat screen TV etc. Bathroom is quite big too however slightly outdated (morally, not physically) . Everything is totally clean of course.
The breakfast restaurant is huge and you may feel odd in the beginning. The selection of food available is adeqaute but with no thrills.

Overall - if you are in town and have no idea where to stay Viru would be a good choice and will not dissapoint you.

Stayed for two nights with my family. The extra-bed was arranged upon my request. We got the old room (suddenly I knew that we were the last guests of this room - after our stay it will be closed for renovation) but it still was OK because the beds were great and everything was clean. We had a great view from the window. Normally I don't like uge chain hotels but this time I had no choice (late booking) and chose Sokos Viru and I must condess it was great. Yes, it's hard to see crowds of people having breakfast at the same time as you but the employees made their best to handle with it - no complaints. And the breakfast was really great (I can judge because I am very difficult).
The parking cost us 20 euro per night (covered parking ot the shopping centre attached to the hotel). And the best surprise - just a short passage (20m from the reception) - and you are in the shopping centre where (on the zero level) you can buy all Estoinian food specialties like fish, cloudberry jam, chocolate Kalev and so on.

The receptionists work as hard as bees but try to help and to serve as fast as they can. Nice stay, great service. Will certainly think about visiting again.

Room Tip: Some rooms have a great view over the old city and sea.

Checked in at the hotel around two staff was okay nothing too friendly just business for them. Got a room on the 18th floor which was nice. View is okay not that much too see in Tallinn.

Room had a nice bed and a spacious bathroom. Once again a typical hotel room but with boring colors.

Front office employee showed us to the restaurant we wanted to eat this time there was more friendliness.

Breakfast was fine. Enough choice, at 9 am not everything was available though (weird for this time of breakfast)
The breakfast hall is large like a convention hall without personal touch. Various staff members wearing different outfits and the chairs used were basic banqueting chairs which the hotel didnt even bother to use chair covers for. Not too mention the purple table cloths making the already dark room even darker.

Overall quality of the stay and the food was fine but dont expect anything more than that.

Clean rooms, good price. Spent my New years party there. Food was good too. Nice view outside. Hotel is near movie theater. One of the best locations in city center. Definitely coming back there next year.

This hotel was built for western tourists by Finnish constructors in Soviet-Estonia, 1972. The local people said it was built from a new material called "micro concrete", that is half concrete, half microphones. They now have an interesting KGB museum in the 23rd floor, well worth visiting, and a nostalgic Hard Currency Bar with an 80's Soviet kind of decor.
The hotel room we stayed in was a superior room, located in the 11th floor with a nice view towards the sea and the old town. The room was clean and quite recently renovated, with no signs of Soviet times to be seen.
The staff was quite helpful, most of them even spoke Finnish (I am from Finland myself), and those who didn't were fluent in English. There was a sauna department with jacuzzis, which can be booked from the reception for 29 EUR per hour, for max 5 persons. On their website it says the sauna is available daily until midnight, but unfortunately the night I tried to make a reservation around 10 pm, they had already closed it for the evening because there were not enough reservations.
There are two day spas in the hotel, with good service and reasonable prices.
The breakfast was very plentiful, and many people even come to enjoy it from outside the hotel, it costs around 12 EUR for non-hotel-guests.

Room Tip: Ask for a view towards the sea.

This hotel was also known as KGB favorite hotel when they spy customers from the west. I can imagine that was easy to do. Our jr- suite was quite high, but someones was higher what we heard 4am in the morning, a group of people start to move furnitures or something else and speaking very loud. And the beds was totally too soft. Take also time when you left the hotel, the receptionist are not the fastest ones. The good things that it near by old town and shopping facilities. Breakfast was also very good.

Room Tip: Better view if you choose the sea view, other side is the grey town view.
