“Big hotel in Tallinn”
Reviewed 18 May 2014

On our last night in Tallinn we stayed at the Viru. The hotel is centrally located, and can act as a beacon when trying to find your way back, it's a huge building, there's no way you can miss it.

The top floor is the old KGB office floor, nowadays a museum. Nothing to rave home about, but worth the walk up to the 23rd floor for the views, if your room as a less interesting one.
The room (on the 9th floor) was big and comfortable. Coffee machine in the room, almost too much, since there's a rather nice communal coffee/tea machine on the hall.

Breakfast was very nice, in a private room, apart from clients from the neighbour hotel.
Definitely not a boutique hotel, but not a bad choice if you don't mind these big hotels.

We spent three nights in Viru. Well it is an old hotell, I understand, but the rooms need reforming. The floor was in a terrible shape. The bed was very uncomfortable to sleep. We had our room on 11th floor. The wiev was nice, direct to old town. Well the hotell wasn't very comfort to sleep.
But it is located near the harbour and the old town. It's just few hundred meters to walk to the old town. Old town is worth of seeing!
The breakfast was simple - eggs in many forms, bread, cheese, porridge, fruits etc. It was enouhg but nothing speciall. Very hard to find table for 4 persons. We went to eat 8.30 a.m.
There are only shower gel in the room - so if you need shampoo or conditioner, take your own or buy. There was ironing system, laundry (very cheap) service, mini bar in the room.
Well the cleanliness. It wasn't good. There were dust in the rooms floor and I think that they didin't change the sheets any time during our 3 night stay.
There were a shopping centre in the same building (Guess store!).There you will find everything. We took a taxi when we wanted to see other shopping centres (cheaper ones). Taxis were very cheap too.
Maybe there were a lot of nightlife in this hotell - night club - but we didn't go. I used a hairdresse one time. 34 euros for a coiffure and I liked it.
KGB museum is worth to see, too. Ask it from the reception. The staff was friendly.
Well this one was an average hotell - good location - but maybe next time we will choose another one, something with spa and luxury.

Room Tip: A room from the upper floors

22-storey Soviet-era hotel, revovated in installments, complete with spooky KGB museum on the top floor... Rooms perfectly clean and well-maintained but rather dated on the lower floors, so well worth paying the extra 20 Euros per night upgrade fee for a "Business-Class room" on the upper floors, with fabulous views over the Baltic, the harbour or the Old Town of Tallinn. Seems to cater mainly for Finnish "booze-cruisers", hence the "average" rating, but my newly-renovated room on the 22nd floor merits an "excellent". Very friendly and helpful staff. Visible efforts being made to upgrade the image and facilities of the hotel. Maybe avoid the weekends when the hotel is swarming with coach parties of elderly people... who all arrive at precisely the same moment for their breakfast, total chaos despite the huge breakfast room, like something from a "Carry On Up the Holiday Camp" film !!! The hotel is very conveniently located within walking distance olf the Old Town and ferries, and the new warehouse district close by which is being nicely renoved with yuppy cafes, restaurants, apartments and offices.

Room Tip: Insist on the upper floor rooms, even though they cost more, well worth the supplement !

We stayed here only for one night in November. The receptionist was really nice and even offered some gifts to the kids. I asked if it would be possible to have a late check out the next day and she said she would write it down and we should check next morning again. Next morning we checked and got a later check out with no extra fee.

Room itself was clean, modern and really spacious. It had even special shampoo for children.Breakfast was included in the room price and was quite big. There was something for everyone and it was an excellent start for the day.

Location was great, just 300 meters from the beginning of the old town. If you come with the ferry, they even have a free bus to transport you to the hotel. It runs every half an hour and as we just missed one, we decided to walk. You see it right away from the harbor and it takes about 30 minutes in a slow pace to walk there.

We were really happy and with the price we paid, we would come again.

Just back from Tallinn Estonia, stay at the Viru Hotel which was built in the 1970's by the Russians
It has 23 floors but only 22 open to the public the 23rd is now a museum as it was the offices of the local KGB. Its worth having a look at the out of date equipment even for the 70's/90's.
The hotel is clean and the staff on the front desk try their best, but the hotel is old and is starting to show its age, could do with a 21st century facelift. Breakfast is a back in time experience which you have to try But watch out for the scrabbled eggs and the porridge .
The hotel is situated in one of the best locations, just a short walk in to the old town.Tallinn is a lovely city with a lot to do and see with great coffee shops and cakes
Go and enjoy

Room Tip: Try and get a room on the front of the hotel for view of the city and the buildings light show

Good location next to public transport station, Tallinn old town and shopping areas, nice room, free wifi and speedy service. OK, admit that this hotel is not fancy, unique or in any way interesting, but you can always trust a certain class when visiting. Worth the money.
