“The Three Sisters Hotel -best 5* hotel!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 1 May 2007

My husband and I are just home from a wonderful weekend in The Three Sisters hotel. This is a fabulous 5* hotel, on the edge of the old town. The staff were all so friendly and very welcoming, nothing was too much trouble for them. The bedroom we had was fabulous, with amazing furnishings and fittings. When booking, ask for a room with a
balcony!

Breakfast was lovely, hot food all freshly cooked to order -no hot plates here! Dinner was just gorgeous, food was excellent as was the wine list, which my husband drooled over! Again, the staff were very professional, but friendly. As for Tallinn -would I go back? Maybe, maybe not!

The Three Sisters hotel is not a design hotel, it's a small boutique hotel with a lot of charm.
Within walking distance of the beautiful old town square (10-15 minutes), it's inside the walls of Tallinn (I recommend to stay in the old town to fully appreciate Tallinn, a fairy tale city of the middle age).
Comfortable with a very pleasant service, the three sisters hotel is peaceful and relaxing (I personally prefer design hotels with music, bar and so on, but it you like charming hotels, the Three Sisters is for you!).
Recommended.

I stayed in room 10 in the courtyard under the wall and loved every minute of it. The staff made me feel very welcome when I checked in and were extremely helpful when the green fairy allowed me to miss my flight the following week.

The bed was very large and comfortable. The hardwood floors were very nice. The room size was very large. The bathroom was OK. Breakfast offered a large assortment of high quality food and the hotel provided faxed newspapers in four or five laugnages.

Would definitely want to stay here again.

My wife and I stayed here for four nights over New Year’s Eve 2005, so apologies about the long delay in posting a review.

We found The Three Sisters to be first class throughout. The attention to detail in the design and refurbishment is absolutely amazing, resulting in a hotel which is stunning to look at and explore. The lobby has a roaring log fire and comfortable chairs. Staff were generally warm and welcoming, but some needed a big smile from me to help them along.

We stayed in room 11, which had a lovely comfortable four-poster bed, writing desk and chair, small plasma TV and DVD player, and lots of wardrobe space. The bathroom had under-floor heating and although it was small the design and layout made the most of it. I do agree with other posts that the shower over the bath tended to cause leaks onto the floor, but it really was nothing to get excited about.

Our room was facing over Pikk Street and we had a lovely balcony with superb views down in the direction of the square, and up to Fat Margaret’s tower and the old walls. The glazing design was such that the patio window was set back into the room so we could go out onto the balcony and enjoy the view without the room cooling down in the -13oC temperature. This was also the perfect place to cool drinks, but if we left water out overnight it was frozen solid in the morning!

We found the breakfast buffet to be substantial – fruit, cereals, all the continental trimmings like cheeses and meats and plenty of choices of bread. Admittedly, the staff were not in any rush when bringing tea or coffee, or to take your order for eggs or omelettes.

Inside the hotel we made use of the library as a place to chill out and flick through some of the cool designer books and the guides on Tallinn. Board games were also available, and DVDs could be borrowed from reception to take up to your room. On New Year’s Eve we sat down in the lobby of the middle sister and had a few glasses of wine when watching the seriously rich arrive for the Gala Dinner in their suits and party dresses.

The location is absolutely fantastic. Out the front door and to the right it is a short five or six minute stroll down cobbled Pikk Street to the Old Town Square. On the way you are surrounded by hundreds of years of history, such as the St. Olaf’s Church, countless medieval merchants’ houses and the former KGB headquarters. You can also drop in for a Saku beer or a mulled wine in Hell Hunt bar. To the left of the front door it’s only fifty metres walk to the old town walls and fortifications, including the huge Fat Margaret’s Tower. The airport was on fifteen minutes in a taxi, and the ferry terminal to Stockholm or Helsinki only ten minutes walk.

When in Tallinn I recommend allowing yourself at least two full days (three nights) for sightseeing. Although the old town is compact, there is plenty to do and so many gorgeous pubs and cafes to disrupt even the best laid plans. We ate in both medieval themed restaurants – Olde Hansa and Peppersack – and loved them equally. Explore the shops and churches, walk up Toompea Hill, walk around the perimeter of the city walls. On New Year’s Eve at about 11:30pm we walked down to the Old Town Square and enjoyed an impromptu firework display. Rockets were flying everywhere and people were drinking champagne from plastic cups or straight from the bottle! The atmosphere was one of fun and happiness – not a drunken yob or an argument in sight.

We also went on a full day trip to Helsinki, simply because it was close by and we had a bit of time to spare. The catamaran was quick and comfortable, and we had a good time in Helsinki, but only for the day. I would recommend going if you have the time, but it is seriously expensive and there’s actually very little to do. It does not have any of Tallinn’s charm, and the architecture can be summarised as ‘grey’ and ‘square’. In my opinion, those people who spend a few days in Helsinki and visit Tallinn for a few hours are doing things completely the wrong way about!

Maybe our enjoyment was heightened by the snow outside and the huge Christmas tree in the square, but we found Tallinn and the Three Sisters to be very special. We have been extremely fortunate to have travelled to the majority of European cities and we would rank Tallinn in the top two or three for a long weekend. If you are looking for a hotel which reflects the medieval history of Tallinn combined with modern luxuries, then The Three Sisters is the place for you. I recommend it highly.

Tallinn is fantastic, and this hotel has much to recommend it - it's in a charming historic building, in a good location, and it boasts some high-class features. But there are negatives: the total lack of sound insulation, the slightly feckless service (like our busboy not having a clue how to get to our room), the somewhat eccentric arrangement in the bathroom whereby the shower flooded the floor. The room was very appealing, with lots of character, excellent TV options, a seriously comfortable bed and a good sofa, but for a hotel at this price level there were a few surprising traces of amateurism.

I am frequently in Tallin and usually can choose my hotels; I prefer the Domina City and the Radisson. I was once at the 3S and it wasn't nice; now I was there once again (because my favorites were booked out), and the bad things haven't changed, hence the review.

This is the most prestigious hotel in Tallinn (so state guests stay there); it is also okay for tourists (but not for business as it is too far from anything). Yes, the design is great, typical Estonian minimalism over the historic substance. And it deserves a ***** for room design and ambiance...

... almost, but good design must be functional. Here, it is not! Two plasma TV's are nice, but if they are close to each other and changing channels in one won't have that effect on the other, that's not good. If 4th floor windows go to the floor but have no safety bar, this is not cool. If the staff can't explain the lighting arrangements, if the safe may change codes and the staff doesn't know how to open it, if you cannot take a shower without drowning your bed... that's not really good design.

And the breakfast was horrible - an enternity until the coffee came (too pretentious for a buffet or at least quick coffee), the menu was small, and the items were just not good. Really enerving was the pretentious clientele that talked loudmothedly across tables (SONY executives from Germany and some Swiss bankers).

Altogether, a really unpleasant stay. I would really recommend almost any other ***** or **** hotel in Tallinn, unless your love for "pure" design is really great. A cheaper, better located, cuter pretentious ***** is the Schlössle, if you are in the market for that.

I have just returned from a wonderful two night stay at the Three Sisters. The room was large and comfortable and an excellent mix of old and new. The restoration of the three buildings has been done so tastefully and with such style...I would recommend this hotel to anyone for a short break in Tallinn.

It is only a short walk from the main square, the staff were genuinely friendly and attentive, we had a complimentary transfer to the airport and the breakfast was great. The whole atmosphere is very relaxed. A great little find!
