What a great place to get a real perspective of Tallinn. look out over the city and see how many catholic and protestant churches you can spot. Hint the weather vein on top tell you what kind of church it is.

Visiting Toompea seems a must when in Tallinn - walking up Pikk Jalg is the easiest way to get to the top as it's a gradual ascent, unlike some of the other routes. We went early in the morning so it was quiet and most of the shops and cafes were not open yet. There are alot of embassies in Toompea so I suppose that is why the neighbourhood exudes a different kind of atmosphere from the Old Town. There are two viewing platforms (Kohtu and Patkuli; I preferred the latter) but the views are OK, they are nothing to shout about - would be better going climbing St Olav's tower for the views. It was a nice area to spend some time in as there are some green spaces. The main landmark on Toompea for me was the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral so it was a real shame to see it with green scaffolding around it : ( The interior is beautiful though pictures weren't allowed. Sadly the groups of tourists arrived so we had to make a quick descent!!!! Our chosen route was the atmospheric Luhike Jalg where we stopped at a cafe along the way!

The whole old town is wonderful to walk in, but from the hill you have a good view over the whole town. There is also a cafe at the top, where you can just go for coffee, or for little snacks.

Recently rented an apartment in the Toompea Hill neighborhood. If you are looking to have the best of both worlds during a stay in Old Town Tallinn, the apartment route is one I would recommend. We were close to Old Town attractions, but far enough away from the rowdier bar scene and throngs of cruise ship goers that were concentrated near Viru Gate entrance and nearby square. Be prepared for an uphill climb...it is Toompea HILL after all, but the views and attractions will be well worth the climb.

We walked past this hill and cafe multiple times during our stay, and I very much regret not stopping in earlier. The pretty little green, hexagonal restaurant has lovely seating inside and out, a small selection of snacks, and a fantastic view. We enjoyed a rice, egg, and onion pastry on our last morning after checking out of our hotel...honestly, possibly the tastiest meal from the entire trip!
