“Room without window”
Reviewed 10 July 2014 via mobile

Room without a window wasn't something we appreciated. Next time I will have to ask when booking a room, it was so strange not to have a window. Breakfast was bad, and staff didn't make us feel welcomed. Thank god the bed was cozy. Ain't gonna visit that hotel again.

This review addresses only a room located UP .... no dungeons and we had two windows. However, UP is definitely UP !! Up does not involve an elevator or lift, but does involve a winding and circuitous route through the old structure and always, always, UP. It was an interesting experience, a good location for visiting all of the old town. Did not use the restaurant, the included breakfast was adequate. I'd stay here again, it was fun in it's own way. However .... remember, ... you must carry your luggage UP if you are not in a dungeon room!

Ok, stag weekend so occomodation wasn, t on the high list
Most of us were in the dungeon rooms which to say the least leave a lot to desire
the breakfast was plentyful and eatable
the best thing about this hotel was its superb position in the old town which you couldnt fault
as others have said an upgrade to a room with a window would have made a vast difference
tallinn is definately a must to visit

Room Tip: Get a room with a window

Having stayed in numerous hotels in Tallinn, this is not one of my favourites. But if it's your first time and you want to stay in the Old Town, why not. It's close to everything and really has that special Old Town atmosphere if that's what you're looking for. Our room was on the first floor, facing the street. It got very noisy during the night with all the people returning from Tallinn nightlife. The walls are really thin as well so make sure you bring earplugs. The breakfast was in Russian style, not really my favourite but as said - if you're looking for an experience, then sure.

The only way to grade this place fairly is to have two separate sets of reviews for the above and below ground rooms.

Ok so to treat this place fairly I should give some background. I have had quite a bit of experience, albeit a bit in the past, traveling in Estonia. I know the city pretty well and I was back here to visit some old friends with my son. We put the trip together at the last minute and over the Christmas/New Year holidays so it was miraculous we found anything decent. We booked a basement room for a really reasonable rate. There's a reason why the room rate spectrum is so great.

The hotel itself is easy to find (if nothing else use the Hell Hunt Pub as a landmark). Inside you will find a small lobby with sometimes helpful staff. The ones who are helpful are quit nice. Unfortunately for all of us cellar dwellers we must descend a tight spiral staircase, yes with your luggage, which enters into the restaurant waitstaff prep area. Don't let my poor description scare you away. It smells very nice, the ladies serving are decorative (costumes) and very pretty and the "prep area" isn't as rough as you would think. I kind of enjoyed it actually. You walk through this area, turn right and enter a hallway. This is where things get interesting.

We were in one of the most interesting rooms I have ever stayed. On the right side of the above mentioned hallway there are three windows. As you pass these, make another right and then another quick right you will reach this room. Avoid that room. The three "windows" you passed in the hallway are actually windows from our room which open into the hall. Very strange. these windows were open when we entered the room and had I not parted the curtains to see them open would have remained so even after we dropped our things off. So we obviously closed the windows.

It didn't take long to realize why they leave the windows open. There is a not so pleasant smell emanating from the bathroom which builds up in the room. The room is also very warm. Bad smells + warm room make for interesting combination. We were only in there to sleep since we were with friends the rest of the days/nights so we tolerated the smell.

The wireless internet access advertised is an absolute joke in the basement rooms.

For all Americans/Western Europeans, leave the elitist attitudes at home. This is a fabulous country with some of the best people you will meet anywhere in the world doing their best to pull themselves out from under the weight of the Soviet past. They're getting there. Standards are still a bit different so just roll with it. All in all I would stay here again but not in that room. And, really the location is hard to beat.

Save some money on supplies: Walk out the front door and take a right down Olevimagi. Take your first right for a short bit and then another right onto Vene street. You will see a break in the wall to your left after a short distance which is Bremeni Kaik. take that to Uus street. Make a right and walk a short distance where you will see a car park on your left. Walk through the car park and make a right. You will find Rimi supermarket which is a pretty good one and you can save some money or water and alcohol. Bring a sturdy reusable bag with you. Olevi has refrigerators in their rooms so you can load them up with deli meats, drinks etc to cut down on food costs. Directions sound more complicated than it is. Just try it.

Take advantage of the proximity to the Hell Hunt Pub. Pretty good food and a great assortment of beers.

Room Tip: Avoid the room in the basement hallway with the 3 windows!!

I am sure that the more you pay, the nicer room you will get in this hotel. Significantly nicer, i presume. The problem was, that when booking online I had no idea how bad the cheaper rooms actually were. Our room was located in the basement of the hotel deep underground where there was no windows or natural light. First we got a room that smelled like cigarettes, even though we had asked for a non-smoker room. When we complained, we got another room that was ok but just really strange since there was no windows, so it was impossible to know if it was night or day. The room also smelled like mold since it was like sleeping in a wine cellar. The staff also didn't really speak english, which made the whole process quite difficult. Other than that I think the hotel is charming in its old kind of kitch look, we just had a really bad room. The location is wonderful, you're in the middle of the old town and everything is near.

Room Tip: If you stay here, get the nicest and most expensive room. Otherwise go somewhere else

If you want to stay in "Old Town" this is a great location. Here you are in the heart of Tallinn's old town with a quaint second-hand store right next door. I loved the way I had to meandered down long hallways to unexpected stairs to other hallways and through the food prep area to get to my room. It was unique. The evening staff seemed to grunt at my coming and going ~ not in the least bit interested in me as a patron. Which is fine with me ~ adds to the experience. The room was clean, decor interesting, in room amenities interesting, and bathroom small, but typical of other hotels. The price was excellent. The breakfast was very good. Day staff were much more friendly. I would stay here again. If you need someone to carry your bags, you need things from the hotel staff (directions, recommendations, etc) your comfort zone is an American Hotel chain and you need room amenities to that standard, this might not be the hotel for you, but if you can venture outside of your comfort zone, you might enjoy the unique charms the Olevi Residents has to offer. Happy Travels.
