“Great breakfast place in a beautiful setting”

The building and the setting is the perfect way to start the day. Enjoyed a great breakfast here -- excellent coffee, delicious egg-filled croissant and a yummy cinnamon roll.

“Nice location but that is it.”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 27 May 2014

The location is great, the building very nice, but nevertheless I would suggest to walk on past, as the service is very poor, several hours before closing time there was no cooked food on offer and hardly anything else - the cakes, pies etc. looked quite sad. Tap water is not served, even if the water is very good in Tallinn, so obviously earning a few extra euros is more important than any consideration for environmental issues, hardly a modern approach. Most of all the service was a disappointment.

“Excellent food in the nicest neighborhood of Tallinn”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 10 October 2013

This is definately a place to visit when you are in Tallinn. It's a located in Kadriorg park on an really idillic location. Just next the presidential palace and several interesting musea.

The veal cheeks with roasted potatoes and ratatouille was just excellent! You directly notice the food has been prepared with a lot of love and care. Katharinenthal is a small and busy place with great food.

Enjoy!

“Food and environment great, service depends”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 25 September 2013

Café-restaurant Katharinenthal is located in Kadriorg Park, Tallinn, at a location overlooking the beautiful Swan Pond close to the Presidential Palace and the KUMU Art Museum. The building is painstakingly renovated and the selection is concise but delicious, including both salty and sweet alternatives made with great care and with a delicious taste. When the weather is good, it is absolutely worth a visit, and even if the weather isn't that great, the interior has certain 19th-century charm to it. Seating inside is a bit cramped, but for us, it doesn't matter.

Pluses:
As far as taste experiences go, Katharinenthal is definitely worth a visit. The inside seating is cosy and comfortable, the outside area calm and with good scenery. The place is easily reachable by public transport, although it is a bit off the centre of the city, because a couple of tram lines pass it by with two stops no farther away than perhaps 150 metres. It is a great place to stretch your legs before or after visiting the Kadriorg Park, the Presidential Palace or the Art Museum.

I had a salmon croissant with black coffee (it was around 10am, so this was a late breakfast), and my wife ordered a smoked chicken-blue cheese quiche with caffe latte. Both were delicious, and the coffee was really good.

Minuses:
The member of staff taking our order at the counter had difficulty operating the cash register, which prolonged the payment. No big deal in itself, she probably did not have a lot of experience. Harder to swallow, though, was that my wife's quiche was forgotten in the microwave, and when we enquired about it after quite some time sitting in the outside area (when I had already had my croissant in front of me for 10 minutes), it was delivered with a rather disdainful attitude. Overall, the waitresses were young and pretty, but gave the impression of not being particularly interested in customer service. The manager of the place, a young woman, fussed about while we were ordering, commanding the attention of all staff (at the cost of customers!?) and overall, did not seem to create a very good working atmosphere.

Weighing the pluses against the minuses, though, do visit the place. It's a nice place, in a beautiful location (have you ever seen black swans in real life?) and there is lots to see nearby.
