City Portus hotel is a great choice for those about to travel with the ferry to Helsinki. It stands a few steps from the D Terminal Building and upper floors have great view to the harbor and the vessels.
Our (twin) room (no double room available) was on the 4th floor, it was spacious enough, clean and nicely decorated. It was a little noisy during ferry departures/arrivals but we were very tired to have the slightest problem sleeping. We arrived very early in the morning and they kept our luggage until late at night when we came back to check-in! We were pleasantly surprised when the receptionist (Catalyn I think) said goodnight to us in our mother language (Greek)!!!
Due to a very early departure next morning to Helsinki, they readily prepared two breakfast boxes to take with us. Generally, breakfast was ok, with sufficient variety in both sweets and salty snacks. Coffee was also very good.
The hotel is about 10 minutes walk to the old town and gives you the chance to see (while crossing) recently regenerated blocks, modern architecture and lots of super markets and liquor stores!
The hotel offers fast meals like pizza, hamburger etc. in reasonable prices.
We can say that is a good value for money and gets even better deal if your plans include a trip to Helsinki! We would stay again for sure.

Room Tip: Rooms on the front (overlooking on the D Terminal Building) may be very noisy during departures/arri...

I chose this hotel as I wanted to stay somewhere near to the ferry terminal and away from the tourist centre.

On the positive side: cheap, fairly clean, good sized bathroom with wet room, built in hairdryer, storage unit for clothes, desk and chair, safe storage in reception, helpful reception staff, good wifi, excellent tavern a minute away, lots of taxis outside, bus to airport and Viru shopping centre from outside, min mart next door, large shopping centre about 5 minutes away. An interesting sight is watching the Finns drag away boxes of booze into the ferry terminal. I also got excellent view of the ferries and the sunrises.

On the negative side: the red blinds did not keep out the light, very noisy for most of night, Retro cafe quite expensive and closed at 8, breakfast lacked variety and had weak coffee, cork floors means you can hear people scraping back chairs, beds too narrow and sheets too small for beds. I had poor quality sleep for all 5 nights. Miniature TV in rooms. AC was good (but I did travel at the end of October).

I gave it a 3 out of 5 because of the poor sleep and breakfast.

If, like me, you want to stay in the harbour area it is a good possibility but if you want to visit the old town I recommend staying somewhere nearer.

Room Tip: Bring your own plug as there isn't one in the bathroom and request a room at the back unless you...

Very clean and well maintained for the price. Breakfast was adequate, a buffet as usual for hotels in this part of the world. As it's in the port area services are a little skimpy but there are a couple of adequate restaurants and bars around there, and the Old Town is only a short walk away. There are plenty of alcohol cash-and-carry outlets to serve the Finnish booze-cruisers.

The location is not ideal for some travellers but almost all of Tallinn's main attractions are within a short walk. As a budget option it's OK.

We stayed at the hotel Portus for a night at each end of our visit. It is clean and tidy. The picture of Tina Turner on our bedroom wall was a bit disconcerting! We were given a twin room having requested a double. Reception said you can't book a double and there aren't any available " you can push the beds together" . End of conversation! Twice! Breakfast was a basic buffet. It was ok, comfortable enough, but small single beds that weren't a double for my husband and myself.

Dear Sheri,

Thank you for your post!

It is good to see that you found City Hotel Portus a comfortable stay overall!
However, I apologize for the distant approach of our staff in the matter of your preferences about the room class.

Basic hotel, ok value for money. Close to the harbor, no need to take taxi if you came tallinn to ship. Quite close to the old town. Service was friendly. Good breakfast. Pretty much a one night stop over hotel. I can recommend if you looking for reasonably-priced hotel, this is good option.

Room Tip: ideal for the budget traveler

Stayed here while on tour and departing from here to Finland so very handy for the ferry but a bit of a walk into the town with some busy roads to cross. Quite secure which it needs to be so near to a port, and next door to a booze store so there are regular trolley loads of cheap alcohol accompanying passengers to the ferry. Some fellow travellers were woken by noisy revellers. We didn't like the decor of our room - too much red and a huge photo of Tina Turner! Food was rather too Eastern European, strange and tasteless with the obligatory slice of dry cake, as we had a set meal as part of our package. Don't drink the tap water - we only used it for teeth cleaning and suffered the consequences! A supemarket quite near if you don't fancy the hotel prices for bottled water.
