“A lovely hotel in a beautiful setting”
Reviewed 10 December 2011

We loved this hotel. it is 30 seconds walk from the main square of the old town and is a charmingly restored boutique hotel. The staff are helpful and friendly. We were disappointed with the small cold room we were given at first so we asked if they could move us which they did to a larger warmer more comfortable room in the courtyard. The breakfasts were OK nothing special in the medieval basement but perfectly adequate. Tallinn is a wonderful weekend break city and if you want a great place to stay look no further than this. Watch out when they book taxis for you that the starting price of the taxi is no more than 3 €. Once they booked a taxi which started at 7 € which was a rip off.

Room Tip: Try for a larger room

Good hotel all round, quick response to emails when booking and happy to negotiate a good price on the hotel room. Friendly welcome on arrival and taxi arrived on time at airport that was pre-booked both ways. Room was clean and spacious and a good all rounder.

I think hotel should just keep an eye on the mildew that was around the edge of the bath and not sure why the radiators do not work, but mobile radiator was fine for my needs.

Breakfast was an average affair and covered my needs and the ice bar was okay, but nothing special, although the member of staff covering it was very friendly.

What made the hotel the hotel for me was the friendly and very helpful reception staff, although I am a seasoned traveller, it is always nice to be greet by your name and a smile goes a long way in my books.

Keep up the good work and just keep an eye on the small things and you will be fine.

We booked three nights at Merchant's House Hotel in The Courtyard Suite at a cost of 175 euros per night, including breakfast. The suite was freezing - there were four radiators, all of which did not work. We complained to Reception and were offered some electric heaters, which were totally insufficient and unsatisfactory. However, the Receptionist was lovely and as helpful as she could be. She provided a further quilt and a complimentary bottle of wine, but this didn't solve the problem - we had to sit with our coats on in the sitting room area! This was November in a city on the Baltic - how ridiculous to put guests into a room where there was no heating and expect them to be happy! We asked to see the Manager and were told that he would be available the following morning at 9.00am. 10.00am came and we were then told that he wouldn't be there until 12.15pm - only staying for 3 days, we had no intention of staying around to suit him! However, again the Receptionist came to our rescue and she arranged for us to be moved to the Presidential Suite, which can only be described as amazing! We could not fault the Reception staff - they are all lovely - really friendly and trying to help at all times. Unfortunately, the lack of courtesy shown by the mythical Manager left us disappointed. Breakfast is very poor - everything left in heaters. With three waitresses standing around doing nothing, it would make sense for orders to be taken - after all, there were very few guests. Breakfast was served 07.30 - 10.30 and we arrived at 10.00am. We were just finishing our breakfast when one of the waitresses approached our table and said - "I'm sorry but breakfast has now finished" - this was at 10.30am - unbelievable!

As far as the Ice Bar is concerned - give this a miss - what a waste of time. There is totally no atmosphere and the waitress was useless and as miserable as sin. Be careful if you ask to put the drink on your room bill - she automatically poured and charged for double measures without asking!

Location-wise, it's great in that it's right next to the Square so central for everything - you can walk everywhere you will want to visit easily and really handy for restaurants and bars. However, the main Beer Keller is directly opposite the hotel entrance and was immediately opposite our bedroom window. Partying goes on right through until about 04.00 hrs so if you are hoping to get a good nights sleep, best ask for a room at the back of the hotel - just make sure it's heated!

This hotel is moving in the right direction but unfortunately fall short in so many aspects. Maybe in a few years they will be able to justify their charges, but at the moment, it's just not quite right and doesn't hit the mark.

Room Tip: Quiet room - at rear of hotel. Presidential Suite is amazing - sleeps 6 with two bathrooms and saun...

This is a very quaint little boutique hotel. Nice small rooms with all the basics - compfy bed, nice linens, small desk, TV, small bathroom. The staff is what makes this place a dream. They will help you do anything. They booked all my reservations, made recommendations on where to go, prearranged my taxi, helped me find great places to eat. They are extremely helpful. Be sure to ask for a quiet room otherwise it can be a bit noisy.

Hotel is located 1/2 block off the main square, so you can't get a better location. Highly recommend. Also be sure to book the KGB Museum. You need reservations. Call ahead, since they have additional tours that are one of two languages. If you book in advance you have more options for english.

Tallinn was a town I was not familiar with, after seeing the photos, decided I needed to go and it exceeded all expectations. Loved the town - great for a 2 or 3 day get away. The free walking tour was also nice. Go enjoy a charming town.

Room Tip: Ask for a quiet room

We stayed 3 nights in this perfectly situated hotel, just round the corner from the main Town Square. The staff were extremely helpful, the bedrooms very comfortable and quiet and breakfast very tasty..all in all a great experience. Loved the sauna in the cellar after a long day exploring the sights of Tallinn. Excellent value as part of package booked through Cresta.

Room Tip: We had a room at the back of the hotel which was lovely and quiet would imagine if there are rooms...

Very comfortable and unique hotel in the very center of the town. Only few steps away from the main old square and right in front of a huge brewery where to get some easy and fast food.
Rooms are placed on various floors but also around what once was the main courtyard and that makes the building very attractive.
Rooms are very clean, generally quite big and well accessorized. Staff super helpful and kind.
Breakfast has a very big buffett and you can ask for your own kind of eggs, all well prepared. Spa is included in the room fee with a short notice reservation.
Price/quality ratio is definitely worth.

I stayed at this old hansa style hotel during a romantic getaway. This was a unique experience with the room in the courtyard with its own entrance; the deco of the room was stylish and elegant, with a spacious bathroom. The location of the hotel is as good as can be. The hotel's breakfast room was in the basement; beautifully lit space and harmonious atmosphere. All in all, a unique experience, one of the best hotel stays ever - I will definitely come back to this hotel whenever I visit Tallinn.
