About a year ago I stayed in this hotel and give it a fairly average rating. I commented at the time that it was good but not great and there were various issues that the management needed to address. I'm very pleased to say that my recent stay was much improved. Three of us went this time and booked two rooms. Both rooms were very good and the air-con was excellent in both of them. I understand that the management has invested a lot of money in new air-con units over the last year and it certainly has paid off.

Previous problems with breakfast arrangements had also been tackled and there had been a complete review of the way in which the self-service breakfast and tea / coffee arrangements were managed. This worked very well and was much better than before. Breakfast staff were also very friendly, helpful and motivated. The breakfast menu is good (hot cooked food and also continental breakfast).

Reception staff are a real credit to this hotel. They are extremely helpful, friendly and courteous. Nothing is too much bother to them.

I'm not entirely convinced that the Ice Bar works and it rather lacks atmosphere although the staff were again very friendly and helpful. Similarly, I'm not sure that the restaurant is working the way it should for evening meals etc. It doesn't seem to be drawing in the customers although I do understand that there is a new menu in place. However there are plenty of good eating places nearby.

Finally, this hotel wins hands down on its location. It is 100M from the main square and right in the centre of the old town. Given that the problems from my previous visit have been addressed along with the superb location and excellent staff I am happy to give this hotel a very good rating. If I'm every back in Tallinn I would certainly stay there again.

We had a pleasant courtyard room, nice and quiet. The breakfast was first rate, even included bacon. The best thing was the friendly and knowledgeable staff. Well located in the old town. The street has a number of lively bars which was good but we valued the courtyard room.

Perfectly located in the old town of Tallinn, this hotel has loads of character but also every comfort. Staff were helpful and friendly. A list of activities/concerts/events over the next few days is displayed each day in reception, which prompted us to go to a charming concert in one of the churches that we would not have known was on. The breakfast room is in the cellar, which added to the character of being in the heart of the old town. Quality of breakfast was good, not outstanding.
Our room faced the street, and the hotel is opposite a pub, so there was a little bit of noise coming from there in the evening (we were sleeping with the window open as it was summer), though it seemed to finish by 11. If you are a light sleeper, request a room facing the courtyard.
Room was clean and in excellent condition, and price was good. WiFi in hotel, included in the room rate. Highly recommended.

We stayed at the Merchant House on a trip to Tallinn, Helsinki and St Petersburg. At the Merchant, we have the Courtyard Suite which was beautiful, full of character and incredibly spacious. The hotel took care of airport transfers, arranged a walking tour of Tallinn for us and the Reception Staff were extremely helpful with any requests. Overall, the experience was of a well run hotel with friendly efficient staff and in a fantastic location just off the Town Square. Only small disappointment was dinner in the restaurant on one of the evenings. Choice was quite limited and food was pretty average

Travelling as a group I was able to see several rooms in the hotel. Our room was large, comfortable and with a modern bathroom. We were on the top floor and our room was marvellous, the other rooms in the older part of the hotel, not quite so marvellous.

Staff were really helpful and made sure every need was seen to. Breakfast was quite good but, again great staff and, more importantly, good coffee.

Location was brilliant. If its old town Talinn sight-seeing you're looking for then give the Merchant's house a look.

Room Tip: Ask for a room on the top floor in the main hotel
