“A lovely boutique hotel with character”
Reviewed 9 June 2008

We wanted to stay close to the city centre for our last night, after a 2 week trip round the Baltic States and chose the Merchant's House Hotel, as the website made it look very attractive. We were not disappointed.

The staff spoke excellent English and seemed enthusiastic about looking after their guests. We stayed in room 110, which was a family room on the ground floor (our children are 5&6). I'd read that there was some noise from the front rooms, which overlook a German Beer Keller, so requested a quiet room, which we were given.

The sheets were so comfortable, I'm going to buy some new ones for home! The hotel sauna was free, so we booked it for just our family and enjoyed the rowing machine and excercise bike too.

We ate out that evening, but the next day breakfast served in their atmospheric cellars. It was amongst the best I've ever had, with a fabulous selection of hot and cold dishes which was constantly topped up with fresh produce if anything ran out.

Really enjoyed our stay.

I stayed here for a weekend for my birthday and it was a perfect experience. The location is great, really central. The hotel staff are excellent. Very friendly, courteous and helpful and professional - they give an excellent first impression of the hotel. We were in a street facing room and also near the stairs so it did get a little noisy but this did not detract from the experience. The room was fabulous with a huge bathroom. Especially loved the sauna that all hotel guests can use (in the Relax room - need to book this via reception). Hotel breakfast was a hotel breakfast but above the usual standard. Had a great experience here and would definitely recommend it.

When staying in the old town of Estonia - you want something cute, quaint and historic but with the mod cons. Well, look no further than the Merchant House Hotel.
I absolutely loved staying there. A medieval ex Merchants House which still has original features like medieval patterns on the original wooden beams. Our room had a wonderful old bath in the centre of the room, shielded by a screen (very groovy) but the toilet was behind closed doors. Definitely a great couples room - but they have others for twin sharers. The restaurant was in the cellar for breakfast nice and cosy and there is a courtyard restaurant. Smack bang in the middle of all the action of the old town. You won't regret it.

I stayed at Merchant's with my friend last weekend. The hotel is one of its kind; built in a medieval house yet representing modern aesthetics. Spacious executive room with calming, stylish decoration made an excellent base for our weekend in Tallinn. The hotel is very centrally located, the Square is just around the corner - I actually couldn't imagine a better location for a Tallinn hotel. I recommend to my friends and will visit Merchant's again.

This is really a gem of a hotel. Just of the old square. Its very quaint, unusual, and extremely comfortable. The staff at this hotel were amongst the best i have ever encountered. There is a hugh buffet style breakfast, everything you could wish for. its also really quiet considering the location. I could go on and on but you must stay there yourself to appreciate the quality of this hotel.

We (a group of 3 couples) stayed at the hotel in March 2008
We bought the winter package plus one extra night
The Hotel was lovely, staff could not do enough to help
The breakfasts and candlelit dinner was great
Position of the hotel is right by the market square and just across from the beerhouse perfect
Highly recommended

We choose Merchants House based on other reviews and were not disappointed. We booked the 3 day winter package which we thought was excellent value.

The hotel is slap bang in the middle of the old town and all its bars and restaurants etc.

We had a standard room (as advised by a previous reviewer we requested, and were given, a quiet room at the back of the hotel) which was a good size and tastefully decorated. The bathroom had a brillant shower which was great for my friend who is 6ft 5ins!. In the room is a safe, mini bar, hairdryer, robe and slippers.

Whilst the room does not have tea/coffee making facilities you can request these for your room - we did this and our request was granted straight away.

As part of the package we had a 90 minute personal tour of the City which was excellent. We also had a three course meal in the hotel - we thought that the food wad very good and the service excellent (although we were the only ones there!).

Breakfast is a combination of hot and cold food. Whilst the hot food was not piping it looked (and tasted) very fresh and not congialed as I have experienced in other hotels.

We had several drinks in the Ice Bar and found that the prices were on par pricewise with other bars we went to. Can recommend trying a few cocktails.

All the staff we meet were extremely friendly and helpful and nothing was too much for them.

The only downside for us was the sauna. Whilst it is really nice you have to prebook and cannot use it if someone else has booked a treatment - I guess just bad design.

I would definately go to this hotel again if in Tallinn.

  • Liked — Old historic building and very tastefully decorated
  • Disliked — Having to book the sauna
