Stayed 2 nights here. Very central to Old Town, short walk to Toompea and Town Hall Square.
Friendly and helpful reception. Good choice of hot breakfast to set you up for chilly walk around city. A comfortable, warm and spacious room to return to.

Stayed: January 2014, travelled as a couple

Recently returned from a snowy long weekend in Tallinn, to celebrate my boyfriend's birthday. The hotel couldn't have been more helpful and friendly; they arranged for a couple of romantic treats, fulfilled our need for a constant supply of tea in our room, and the lovely staff were always on hand to give advice. Our room was great, in a quiet courtyard and having a separate sitting area. The sauna was also fab. From reading earlier reviews, it seems hotel is going to be redecorated soon - it does probably need this, and some of the paintwork etc needed attention, but this didn't spoil the style and comfort of the place at all. When it's done it'll be pure chic rather than shabby chic! One downside was the coffee at breakfast - never hot, and the cups were tiny; also when the breakfast was buffet style it was a little suspect. But that's a very small niggle in what was otherwise a wonderful stay.

We recently stayed at the Merchant's house for a romantic weekend in Tallinn. Even before we arrived the general manager, Jonathan, helped us plan the trip, offering advice on places to go and even booking us a table at a fantastic restaurant (Rataskaevu 16). The whole stay was flawless: the room was great and the service was very friendly and accommodating. The breakfasts were a big winner, with a wide range of options including plenty of meat and egg dishes, perfect for stocking up before a day in the snow. We also managed to make use of the in-house sauna which was so relaxing and great for unwinding before going out for a few drinks. All in all, I would thoroughly recommend this as the perfect place to stay when visiting Tallinn!

We stayed in this hotel for three nights just prior to Christmas - one night in a standard double and two nights in the Presidential Suite.

First of all, as most other reviews point out, the location is brilliant. You could literally kick a football to the town square where the Christmas markets were, and you are surrounded by the heart of the Old Town.

Service was excellent from the moment we checked in to the moment we left - very professional and friendly.

We were also impressed with the breakfasts, particularly the option of ordering from an a la carte style breakfast menu in addition to the standard buffet. We also ate here one night for dinner - a largely vegetarian menu (hard to find in Tallinn) and the food was excellent.

Finally, the rooms themselves were great. The double room was tucked away facing the courtyard, well away from the street frontage. Our room had exposed brick walls and the bathroom was renovated to a high standard, including a big round rain showerhead with excellent water pressure.

The Presidential Suite was AMAZING. It's three stories counting the top floor bedroom, and is simply massive. The two main bedrooms are huge, one of which has an adjoining private en suite with a sauna and a big freestanding bath. The other main bedroom upstairs also effectively has its own bathroom which is similarly well designed, sans sauna.

The central living area was huge and we spent our fair share of time just relaxing on the couches, reading and planning our next excursion. Both rooms had free wifi with strong signals.

All in all, we were extremely impressed and staying here really left us with a good feeling about our time in Tallinn.

Thanks!

Room Tip: Presidential Suite was fantastic. Could work on a couples trip as well - it's big enough to com...

This small hotel is just steps away from the town center, making it the perfect base for a day or two of sightseeing! The rooms are all a bit different in style but all seemed to be large with comfortable beds and nice bathrooms (also large!). Good breakfast, good bar, and very helpful staff.

Perfectly located almost right on the Old Town square. Helpful reception. Average breakfast. Rooms are nicely decorated but nothing special, not very clean and not well-maintained in details. The hotel provides free access to the private sauna located in the basement - book in advance. You can park you car in front of the hotel for 10 minutes but not any longer. Go for parking lots in the Old Town for approximately 20 euro (24 hours) or park your car outside of the Old Town (Ahtri street close to the Norde Centrum, 2 euro for 24 hours, 15 minutes walk to the hotel).

Room Tip: Ask for the room with windows facing inner yard if you'd like to sleep well

Dear Guest,

Thank you for taking the time in writing your review about your stay in Tallinn and the Merchants House Hotel, Tallinn Estonia.

Carparking in the centre of the Tallinns Old Town is not the cheapest, just like other European cities around the world. This is due to available space and the real estate value of these premises. As you mentioned carparking on the borders of the the old town and further out is much less expensive.

During the winter period the hotels sauna can get busy especially during holiday season(s). But hotle guests appreciate that the Merchants House Hotel offers this free of charge 24hrs a day, not like any other hotel in Tallinn.

The hotel is going through a room by room refurbishment plan that will also include a renovation at a later stage of the courtyard and corridors that will eradicate these details you have mentioned.

Looking forward to welcoming you back to Tallinn and the Merchants House Hotel.

Kind Regards

We stayed in this hotel for 5 nights - a couple in a double standard room and a solo person in a single room.

Our rooms were each a good size, with huge comfortable beds, and good facilities. The hotel is nice and quiet.

The location is superb - 15 minutes by taxi from the airport, about 20 steps to the Old Town Square, 5 minute walk to one of the hop-on/hop-off bus stops, 10 minute taxi to the Ferry Terminal D (for ferries to Helsinki).

The service here was outstanding. We had two problems while at this hotel - to me the way a hotel reacts to an issue is a true test of service and the Merchants House were wonderful! Our first issue was a smell in the double room. It had obviously been used by someone who didn't understand the 'no smoking' signs. We tried to air it out but it was no help. We called the front desk to complain and within 20 minutes we were given a new room that was perfect. The front desk didn't query our complaint, they immediately jumped to finding us a new spot. Wonderful.

Our second issue was our friend got into bed one evening and discovered that the sheet wasn't clean, it was used and not by her! There must've been a mix-up in the cleaning process. Again, as soon as she had complained the staff had a replacement on her bed within minutes. They were also very apologetic.

The food at breakfast was very nice with a good selection of hot and cold foods.

Dinner was also very good. We all had steak and it was very nicely cooked and tasty. The dinner is extremely good value for money.

The hotel bar is also very good, and there is a lovely big fireplace that you can sit in front of while enjoying something from the bar. The bar was very convenient for friends traveling together - a comfortable place to hang out before venturing out for the day, or upstairs to sleep.

Room Tip: The third floor in the main building was very good.

Good Morning

Thank you for taking the time in writing a review. I must first apologise for not replying earlier, I am not sure how your review was not answered by me?

Tripadvisor is a major internet tool, to help guests decide many things while travelling. your in depth review has many good comments for future guests visiting Tallinn and also to help to the Merchants House training process.

The hotel is 100% non smoking and has been for 8 years. Some guests break this rule, but this is very rare. I am extremely sorry that the room was not blocked out after the previous guests broke the hotels rules.

I most additionally apologise that the room check before your arrival did not pick up on the two issue. please except mine and my teams apoligises.

I would like to thank you for comments regarding the hotel NEW RESTAURANT URBAN, and the quality of the food.

Wishing you all the best in 2014

Kind regards
