“Friendly yet luxurious in the heart of Old Town Tallinn”
Reviewed 22 June 2009

The mood was set by the Audi A6 and driver meeting me at the airport at 11pm and safely seeing me to the hotel door. The staff were very friendly and helpful and the hotel has underground parking; a plus given the crowded narrow streets of Old Town. The rooms are lovely and the service closet is a great idea. The small lobby bar is a great place for a drink. Breakfast is included and was very good. My room on the top floor had two small terraces overlooking Tallinn. I was very impressed with the small but beautiful spa and the very helpful receptionist. Highly recommended.

Spent two nights at the Telegraaf on business.

This is (surprise, surprise) the former post and telegraph office, converted into an attractive modern hotel.

First impressions were good, with a marble foyer furnished with plush easy chairs. Check-in was pleasant and quick.

Bedroom very well-equipped, with a king-size bed, two armchairs, a flat-screen TV and a work area. Free wi-fi was provided.

Bathroom was not quite so impressive, but was more than adequate, with a good overhead shower and high quality Elemis toiletries.

Breakfast was excellent.

This is a first class hotel in the best area of this lovely mediaeval city. I can recommend it highly.

Look at the view from the sixth floor of the Telegraaf Hotel (I took the photo in the lobby on the left as you step out of the lift). Could you get a better view of the old town spires and churches? Not without climbing 35 metres up winding medieval staircases. That’s why the Telegraaf has a huge advantage, a fantastic location and modern lifts!

We did not start with an entirely favourable impression. Our greeting at the front desk wasn't particularly friendly and the view from the room was partly blocked by a cluster of television aerials on the empty property across the street. But dinner in the hotel’s Tchaikovsky restaurant put us in a far better mood. The food was excellent and the service efficient and friendly. We slept like logs in the large, comfortable beds.

By the end of our stay we had changed our minds completely. We had tried the pool and spa, abandoned our dinner at a local restaurant after the second course because we like the desserts at the Tchaikovsky restaurant so much (and got a lesson on how they fold napkins into the shape of swans) and benefitted hugely from the excellent position of the hotel a few hundred yards from the main square because we could pop in any time as we explored the attractions of Tallinn.

Tallinn is a beautiful city with a past which was golden at some times and grim at others. We enjoyed our stay and would recommend the Telegraaf as an ideal base.

Tallinn is a delightful town that has avoided many of the architectural horrors of Communist Russia's brutalist architectural regime. Just three hours away from London Gatwick this is an ideal long weekend holiday spot with a similar atmosphere to Prague.

Churches in the old town are still the highest points of the land and there are many lovely old buildings and cobbled streets to enjoy exploring. For accommodation look no further than the Hotel Telegraaf, housed in what was once the main Post Office. Hard by the old town square and within easy distance of all the major sights the Telegraaf is very similar in style to the Malmaison chain in the UK providing first class facilities for the discerning customer.

The staff are extremely friendly and all speak superb English. English replaced Russian in schools during the switch from Communism to capitalism. And the breakfast is first rate too, with a wide selection of food and drink, including some excellent Prosecco for those looking to start their day with a fizz.

The rooms are on the small side but extremely well fitted and there is more than enough to do around town or on one of the nearby golf courses without needing to spend too much time in them. The beds are comfortable and the bathroom well equipped. Only the mini bar prices cause any discomfort.

If you are looking for somewhere up-market to stay in Tallinn simply wire the Telegraaf.

My partner and I stayed at Hotel Telegraaf for two nights, and had a reasonably enjoyable stay. The hotel is in the perfect location, just off the Old Town Square. Our room was spacious and clean, and the beds were very comfortable. The shower over the bath was very powerful, with a plentiful supply of hot water.

There were a couple of issues that took the shine off the visit for us though. When we arrived, we were greeted by a less than friendly, and seemingly inexperienced member of staff. We were put into a twin room instead of the double we'd booked, but the hotel were kind enough to let us use the twin until a double was prepared for us. Our new room was fine, although as you find in most European hotels, the 'double' bed was just two singles pushed together, and the view from the window was not an attractive one. The air conditioning controls didn't appear to work, and hot air was pumped out regardless of what the settings were. We had to open the windows overnight to cool the room down, but had to shut them again at around 5am, when loud noises from the buildings behind the hotel woke us up. We were also unable to use the spa facilities due to maintenance, but were not informed of this at the time of booking.

Overall, I thought the hotel was attractive and comfortable, and located in the perfect spot for sightseeing. Breakfast was pleasant, and most of the staff were very attentive. I think we were unfortunate to experience the problems we did, but this may be due to the timing of our visit. I still believe it is the best hotel in the centre of Tallinn, and would probably recommend it to others, despite the problems.
