“Unusual hotel in a beautiful location”
Reviewed 22 February 2014

We have just returned from staying at St Olav hotel. We enjoyed our stay here, it is a very quirky place. Our initial room was a standard double, it was on the ground floor entered externally via a courtyard. It was adequate, extremely warm. However we had a problem with the safe and the receptionist had to come and reset it. When she entered the room she noticed a strange smell which we had also noticed but dismissed. She offered us a new room which we took and are so glad we did....it was a junior suite with a spa bath and kitchen.

This hotel is not for those with mobility issues (unless on ground floor) as there are no lifts. There are lots of narrow winding staircases and a maze of corridors. The floors are uneven and you may have to duck under a low beam to access your room. It all adds to the charm of this place - we loved it! I defy anyone not to get list here or use the same route twice to your room.

The breakfast is ok though a little limited. The usual ham, cheese, salad selection, bread and pastries etc, the porridge was good,

The staff were fine. The minibar had a price list so no shocks at end of stay (although it was expensive).

Would recommend this hotel with no problems.

Room Tip: If you have mobility problems ask for ground floor otherwise take a chance and see where you end up

We booked very late and due to the holiday season had very little choices left. We spent three nights in St. Olav and were quite disappointed: the soundproofing was awful and we could hear what was going on in the other rooms, there was no elevator so we had to climb the stairs to the fourth floor, the shower was disgusting and the service distinctly unfriendly. In addition, we had paid beforehand but it didn't show up on their system, though that was quickly resolved. On the plus side the room was clean, the location pretty good if you're into touristy things in the old town and the breakfast was decent enough.

I have stayed in this hotel once and loved it; however, while booking I noticed a good amount of people saying that they were put up at a sister property of a lower caliber. I disregarded that – my mistake. The location that they put us up in was the Olevi Residents. Mind you, they did not notify us that they we overbooked for the entire duration of our stay, nor did they really compensate us for change. The lady said that she “upgraded” to a standard room from the economy room I had booked. In the upgraded room, we had water stains on the ceiling, the bed and all chairs sank in the middle – did not end for a good night, hot water lasted for 1 day out of 3, the people at the front desk made it seem like they were doing us the biggest favor by doing the most basic of request, i.e. directions. This is in addition to having to haul our luggage down a narrow and spiral stair case, which shook continuously. This hotel was 2 stars at most, and most of that is based on the location in Old Town and the breakfast. It’s a great con of the St. Olav hotel to get people to pay for the 4 star nice hotel to then transfer them to the cheap and barely inhabitable “Olevi residents”.

It a hotel "with soul". Lots of stairs and corridors. Quite good breakfast. The woman in reception has never learned to smile or say good morning or just hi. The taxi from hotel to airport €15 (he did not turn on taxameter, ask for price in advance!) BUT the hotel is located in old town 150 meter from the town hall square. Do ask in tourist-information whats on. Exelent Christmas town! Warm bathroom with plenty of hot water in shower.

Room Tip: We stayed ground floor to the street, a bit noisy, try to get a room away from street.

This was the most terrible hotel I have ever visited.
a) They cheated us. I had paid 85 euros in advance for a stardard room with double bed but we got a cheaper 65 euros room with twin bed. They didn't want to give that 20 euros back, neither wouldn't they give any receipt for the stay.
I never pay anything in advance but when I made a reservation and gave my card number I just noticed that it wasn't any reservation. It paid it! What a surprise!
B) The woman in reception was very very rude. She didn't want to help us. In fact it felt that she just didn't want us to come there.
C) The room was awful. Style straight from the USSR.
D) The nightclub outside kept us awake. And there wasn't any kind of soundproofing between the rooms.
E) We couldn't find the room, it was unbelievable difficult! There wasn't any kind of guiding.
F) The breakfast was awful. Nothing proper to eat, really.
G) The taxi that took us there cheated us. That man took over 20 euros too much. When I read the other reviews at the hotels.com I noticed that we are not the only ones. I don't know what kind of connection there is between the hotel and the taxis but there might be some.

All in all: I don't suggest this. I'm not a picky person at all. But this was something really special.

St Olav hotell is a hotell for friends travelling as a group who wants to go on shoppin or party.
We tried this as a conferens hotell and it's not working at all...The conferenceroom was to small, to hot, a lot of soud from outside the room, they are not used to have big groups and service at lunch was not working, one our with brekfast and few places to eat in the morning was a bad experience. The hotell has no elevator!!! So if you are sporty and trained, is ok to carrie an heavy suitcase uo four floor and down again.
And at the end.....you can hear the nabour do everything....

Not a very original review title but it says it all. Just one street back from the main square you couldn't be much more central. The hotel is quirky with lots of corridors and staircases and you do have to pay attention to the route if you ever want to find your way out again once you have been shown your room! Yes there were noisy rooms on Friday and Saturday nights at the front of the hotel so I would suggest you ask for the rear rooms if at all possible - I was lucky!
Breakfast was very good and as far as the service is concerned it was fine - we did not find the staff surly at all - the guide books tell you Estonians are not used to smiling at strangers!
All in all excellent value for money.
