An old art university converted into a hotel. The rooms are very much like University Halls of Residence but they are like they haven't been used much. Clean & spartan as well as brilliantly located in the centre of town. Few facilities in the hotel, except the Big Ben pub which is ok. The breakfast here is very basic though.

We stayed in this hotel for 2 nights in June on leisure. Hotel is very good for city trip. Good location, next to the pedestrian street and the shopping malls. Nice, comfortable room with painted walls and large window, very clean, light and quiet on the street side. Comfortable bed and good air conditioner. Delicious breakfast in the restaurant with interesting ancient design. Small good and free private parking place.

It is a nice hotel close to the center of the city. With free car parking and free wi-fi in the room. Rooms are clean, comfortable, with flat TV. Negative moments: no safe and minibar in the room, walls between rooms are rather thin, so you can hear what the neighbours do, and the breakfast costs 7 Euro per person, but it is not good at all, very poor.

Room Tip: Ask for the room with windows facing courtyard.

I stayed here for 3 nights last month while on business, booked because the one that I normally stay in was full. I have to say, I don't think I'd go back. Rooms were a good size but overlooking the very busy main road, and noisy. They are painted in lurid colours, not very restful. On the plus side the bed was wide and comfortable, despite the nylon bedspread which crackled with static and gave me shocks! TV and Wifi worked fine, and the shower was good too. Breakfast was awful. Milk smelt off, and there was very little choice on the buffet. The staff weren't very welcoming, which does make a difference when you're on your own. Location good for town though.

I stayed in Tartu for three days for a conference. By the time my travel coordinator was looking for a hotel for me, there were no rooms available for a conference rate (which was between 54 to 93 euro per night, depending on the hotel). The city is not big and therefore there were no other options but to take a room at the Pallas hotel. Their regular rate is about 70 euro, the conference rate was 60 euro, and they charged me 670 euro for three nights, that is, 233 euros per night. And without breakfast!

The hotel is pretty descent for 60-70 euro per night, but charging 233 euro is certainly not acceptable. There was nothing in the humble room and services that could justify even half of this price.

When I complained at the reception desk, I’ve been told that that they did not set the price; it was booking.com that set it. I complained to booking.com, but their reply was that “the hotels themselves are responsible for all the information provided to you, and all the rates and prices as well. Booking.com acts as an intermediary between the guest and the hotel and is therefore responsible for delivering the reservation correctly to the hotel.”

I contacted the hotel on July 3, and was told that the ‘management’ will get back to me. Further reminder on July 17 yielded a similar reply, but my reminder from August 11 remained unanswered.

Tartu is a charming small city, but the Pallas hotel, under this management, should be avoided.

Oliver P, Manager at Art hotel Pallas by Tartuhotels, responded to this review, 29 August 2012
Dear TRS18,

Thank You for sharing Your experience with hotel Pallas! We appreciate every guest`s feedback highly! We remember the situation You described very well and we are aware that during Your stay in Tartu on 26th-29th of June 2012 there was indeed a very high demand for hotelrooms in Tartu. As the daily prices that hotels opperate with are directly depending on demand, the demand was also the reason why the prices were set higher than usual on the period You stayed with us.
The reply You recieved from Booking.com was correct. Prices and information about the hotels are managed by the hotel staff, whereas all the guests that use Booking.com or any other online booking system are being informed by the system itself about the terms and conditions (including price) when making a reservation. After the reservation (especially non-refundable reservations) has been made and confirmed, the hotel is not able to change the prices nor terms and conditions afterwards in any online booking system. So it means that anyone who is making a reservation through any online system should carefully read all the terms and conditions before accepting them.
About the e-mails You claimed unanswered. We are sorry that You haven`t recieved our general manager`s reply about the situation, which he definately sent You on Monday, August 13th. Could You please check Your mailbox once more?
Alltogether we understand Your point of view and in case You are coming back to Tartu again someday we kindly ask You to contact us directly for a special offer!

Thank You once more for Your feedback and You are most welcome to visit hotel Pallas again!

We stayed 2 nights as part of our trip to Estonia. We had a suite (really a large room). The room itself was big and the large bed soft but comfortable. The room was decorated in keeping with the tradition of the school of art - very interetsting. Our room overlooked the main road facing towards the old town. There was a bit of traffic noise but mostly nothing to trouble us. The bathroom could do with some updating but was OK. The hotel is conveniently located near the centre of Tartu to walk to the main sights. Breakfast in the Big Ben pub on the first floor was odd, but acceptable. The bar staff make good cappuccinos for an extra euro 1,50. Would definitely stay there again if we are in Tartu.

I will start by saying that it was a neat hotel. Overrated, tho.
It's in a perfect location. That's true. You have bus station that's 2 minutes by foot (500 meters, counting the traffic). You have shopping centers and all the pubs/old town and all the restaraunts accessible by foot. No need for a cab.
But still, it's a 3 star hotel.

Standard room includes:
Really spacious rooms. Haven't seen so much room in a standard room. You might hit lucky and get a good view or you might get a room with a view to the parking lot. You have really tidy and neat rooms. Cleaners do their job well. 32" LCD. Comfy chairs and such, but...

+Superb location
+Really big rooms.
+Hotel looks really good, recently restorated.
+Bathroom is clean and spacious. Separated booth for washing thy self.
+Amazing sound-proofing.
+32" LCD TV.
+Excellent service. You ask - they do their damndest to deliver.
+Breakfast is at Big Ben's Pub which is on the first floor of the hotel.
+For you party-people. You literally have to take the elevator down 1-2 floors and you are now inside a british pub with reasonable prices. Very comfortable for late-night drinks or snacks/food.

Reception isn't on the third floor. Just to confirm that.

-Price.
-Air-conditioning is present, make no mistake, but you can't regulate it by yourself. For some reason...they have disconnected the air-con regulation pads and so you only get what the hotel throws at you.
-The beds could use some renewal. I happened to get twin bed room, with some.. really outdated beds.
-Breakfast is...poor to say the least. Sure, you get your standard layout. Butter, sausages, egg-fodder, some fruits, coffee/tea, milk, juices... etc. but the breakfast table is really basic.
-Not much sleep quality. If you visit in the summer it can get quite troubling. Either you leave the window open and have all the outside noise following you through the night or you hope that the central air-con doesn't freeze you. So-so.

All and all - if you are looking for a city-break/get-away - maybe check out Hotel London. Same company that runs this Pallas hotel runs the London hotel. Hotel London is a 4 star luxury hotel. But if you are on a budget then.. There are other options that you can check-out in Tartu. I would recommend it.
