“Good value for money in quite simple hotel”
Reviewed 20 May 2014

We stayed at the Kolonna Cesis for 3 days, corner room on the second floor with the small balcony. It is a hotel in the neo-classic style of the 1930-40s with peaceful interior in warm pastel colors. The location of the hotel in ideal on the main square of the town. Grocery store and 24 H pharmacy are just the opposite the hotel. The Wenden (Cesis) castles and the Old Town are in 3 min walk. The parking in front and at the side of hotel is free of charge for the hotel guests . Cafe and restaurant at the same building with the hotel, sharing the big terrace with breath-taking view to the May Garden - beautiful small green spot with sculptures, fountains and flowers.

If weather allows, it is worth to have a breakfast at that terrace. The food at the buffet breakfast is quite OK, but it was all the same during 3 days. However the service at the Alexis restaurant is quite unprofessional and unfriendly, they were running of coffee, cups, plates, bread, cheese, vegetables literally every 5-10 min. It was impossible to have a proper peaceful breakfast there.

The WiFi connection is one of the best we ever have had in the hotel rooms - quite speedy, no problems connecting any kind of device (smartphones, laptops, tablets). The bathroom is quite spacious and has a bathtub, proper ventilation, good supply with both hot and cold water. Very comfortable bad (be aware, that double beds in that hotel are only 140 sm wide), you can ask the extra pillows at the reception. The service at the reception is ideal: very fast, efficient, extremely and sincerely friendly. It is indeed the good value for money.

However, the room was small, there is a strong need for redecoration - the wallpaper was dirty, the ceiling was in the dust, on the walls there were strong signs of the roof leaking. There were too many pieces of the furniture for such a small-sized room, it was very uncomfortable to stay there two persons. The remote-control did not work properly. It is quite OK room only for a overnight sleeping, if you do not stay much in during the day, exploring Cesis and the surroundings. The room was quite uncomfortable for the longer stay more than 1 person in the room.

Room Tip: Take a room with the May Garden view on the second floor. The corner rooms have a small balcony and...

If you want to visit the lovely town of Cesis, I think you can't go wrong staying here. The location is ideal for exploring the local attractions such as the castle and church. There's nothing wrong with the hotel, it's just a bit basic. I'd have really appreciated a bar but they don't have one. The receptionist was lovely as was every staff member I dealt with.

First impressions are of a classy hotel as you walk through the main entrance into reception. The rooms are basic but clean and functional. The hotel lacks a bar, but there is a good cafe in the basement. Breakfast is good and plentiful.

Classic interior gives your feeling that you in an old movie, red carpets and hangings in huge windows, lovely. You have everything that you need. Rooms were clean and quite big, existence of bath was also plus. The best thing there was a bread in the breakfast. It was the most delicious bread I have ever eaten, truly!

Clean and comfortable room. No ac but generally not needed. It was a hot night but we just left the window open. Hotel set next to a lovely garden and pond with fountains and resident black swans. Good breakfast.
Very close to old town and castle.

As others have noted this hotel is part of a chain and ticks all the boxes. We had few problems, the prounciation of the receptionist a little iffy - did she say 32 or 42 was the room rate? Actually it was 42 for a nice room on the first floor facing the front. The town is quiet so we had no trouble sleeping at night. The second night the hotel was full, so we would of had to move to a ground floor rear facing room. The manager was very honest and said it would be a little noisy from the pizza place on the terrace. We decided to stay at Province instead at 30 Lats at night. Breakfast buffet was fine, although I am not that fussy as long as there is good coffee.
