I have been incredibly surprised by the beauty of the art nouveau district in Riga, I did not expect to find so many buildings, so beautiful and so beautifully renovated.

This museum is the ideal place to start if you want to learn something about Art Nouveau in general and in Riga in particular. It is located in what was the apartment of one of the most famous architects of his times, Pēkšēns, so you have the chance to walk around and see the authentic interiors of the place in which a lot of the art nouveau buildings in Riga were designed. In itself it is an excellent example of Art Nouveau from the beginning of the twentieth century. The day in which we had the tour we were welcomed by a group of lovely old ladies, all dressed up like in Paris at the beginning of the past century, perhaps authentic ladies from those times :)

In the museum you can purchase for a couple of euros two itineraries that drive you through the historic centre of Riga, in search of the most important art nouveau buildings. It is a walk that takes you half-a-day if you stop at every building and read about it, but it is really worth.

Before leaving the museum, do not forget to have a look at the spiral staircase of the building, possibly without disturbing too much the people that still leave there.

Enter Alberta street from the south on your way to Musee Art Noveau at number 12. The street in itself is a museum showing a long row of art nouveau buildings.

The building at number 12 was constructed as the private house for architect Konstantīns Pēkšēns, where he lived until 1907 in the apartment, that now is Musee Art Noveau.

The entrance to the museum is around the corner in Strelnieku street. When you enter, look up to see the beautiful ceiling and after coming up a few stairs to a little hallway you could admire a spiral staircase leading up to higher floors.

The first you see behind the museum doors is the receptionist dressed a la mode of early 20th century topped off with an amazing hat. She sets the expectations high for the museum itself.

The museum apartment shows an art nouveau interior of three rooms in a row, a connecting corridor leading to a bedroom, a toilet, a bathroom, a kitchen with larder and the maid’s room squeezed in behind the kitcken. The place is full of period things, sofas, set dining table, sideboards, mirrors, windows, lamps, gramophone, vases and a sewing machine.

I thoroughly enjoyed my visit here and if once more in Riga I will come back to Musee Art Nouveau. I’m positive I will notice new things that I missed the first time.

I'm afraid I cannot join in the chorus of praise for this museum. The exhibition is very small, with hardly any really impressive pieces of furniture or objects. And dressed-up staff really puts me off. My recommendation would be: once inside the building, don't enter the museum, but walk up the wonderfully decorated spiral stairs. On the top floor, there is a miniscule and unassuming, but much more authentic second museum, the former apartment and atelier of Janis Rozentāls; visit that one instead.

This was the highlight of our visit to Riga - a bit fiddly to find as it is just a small apartment in the building and we had to enter a code to gain access. Small hiccup really. Staff are dressed in period costume - you can too, we did! The detail in all of the rooms is fantastic, from the maid's room with her bed and sewing machine, to the tables set for tea, even a 'chef' making biscuits in the kitchen - they tasted great. Can't recommend it enough - go visit!

A little difficult to find, had to key in a certain code to gain access to the museumon the corner of Alberta Iela and Str.... Brilliant collection of Jugend-style stuff. Set in a 1920s style apartment.
