I have been incredibly surprised by the beauty of the art nouveau district in Riga, I did not expect to find so many buildings, so beautiful and so beautifully renovated.
This museum is the ideal place to start if you want to learn something about Art Nouveau in general and in Riga in particular. It is located in what was the apartment of one of the most famous architects of his times, Pēkšēns, so you have the chance to walk around and see the authentic interiors of the place in which a lot of the art nouveau buildings in Riga were designed. In itself it is an excellent example of Art Nouveau from the beginning of the twentieth century. The day in which we had the tour we were welcomed by a group of lovely old ladies, all dressed up like in Paris at the beginning of the past century, perhaps authentic ladies from those times :)
In the museum you can purchase for a couple of euros two itineraries that drive you through the historic centre of Riga, in search of the most important art nouveau buildings. It is a walk that takes you half-a-day if you stop at every building and read about it, but it is really worth.
Before leaving the museum, do not forget to have a look at the spiral staircase of the building, possibly without disturbing too much the people that still leave there.
