“Highly recommended: Well preserved part of railroad history”
Reviewed 7 April 2014

The museum is right behind the new Latvian/Riga National Library (pyramid like building). Inside there are pictures and explanations about railroad development. Unfortunately most of the explanations seemed to be in Latvian or somehow I missed English information. There is also working model train.
The real gems are outside, old trains, some you can enter to get feeling how it felt to travel on Soviet era train with wooden benches.
The museum inside is very children friendly, with Kindergarten operating in same premises? Admittance is really cheap compared to American museum or several other attractions in Riga.

“not just for train spotters”
Reviewed 5 July 2013

A bit away from the old town, and some 500 metres away from the left bank of the river Daugava.

The Riga railway history museum shows how Latvia was the railway workshop of the Soviet republics, On display there are 12 or so locomotives plus rolling stock, ranging from early 20th century steam trains to more modern diesels.
The pride of place must go to the steam locomotive from the 1940s, used on the Moscow run, with its 2-10-4 formation ( meaning it had 5 driving wheels each side of the engine).
Well cared for and preserved ; it is impressive, safe and worth spending some time if in the area.

“Latvian Railroad History”

Nice railroad museum with a combination of interior model exhibits, films on display, plus outside collection. Museum in former Riga-2 station on the other side of the river from the old town, take a tram or walk across the bridge.
