“Great hotel”
Reviewed 30 July 2008

Konventa Seta is an old convent in the heart of the new town and is based on a series of buildings. There are a lot of tour groups that come through the hotel alleyways to get a flavour of the history of the place, so they can get in the way when moving your luggage at checking out time!

We stayed in building 7 of the hotel complex. Apart from our room being a little dark (the windows were facing a narrow alley) the room was lovely and spacious. We had a little kitchenette area, and a lovely big room. The beds were comfy and the bathroom clean. We found the staff at the front desk helpful and the location was really great.

Breakfast was good - plenty to eat, though we made sure we got there early as there was a large bus load of Americans staying that got there at 8.30 and seemed to fill the restaurant. This didn't bother us overly as Riga is a lovely place for a stroll any time of the day.

  • Liked — Location and the collection of buildings
  • Disliked — Some police women decided to have a smoke just outside our window in the alley and the smell came in our room!

One of the main guide books and also the hotel's website had made this sound attractive, so I booked it as we needed somewhere central, not too expensive, with a family room.

The hotel didn't live up to my expectations. It's very institutional, more like a student hall of residence, but with much older students.

Other tripadvisor comments had mentioned the noise from a nearby pub, so I specifically requested a room overlooking the courtyard when I pre-booked. Instead, we had a room (2,123 - i.e. house 2, room 123) where 3 windows overlooking the noisy jazz club and even noisier adjacent pub, although one window overlooked the courtyard. In house 2, rooms 123-126 all overlooked the back of the former convent.

As for design, the website said something about the latest Danish fashions, but Ikea standard springs to mind. Having stayed in beautifully renovated accommodation elsewhere on our holiday, this place looked shabby.

I think I was most fed up when a member of staff just barged past me coming out of the reception area, without a word of apology in any language. Most of the staff lacked enthusiasm, but then this is a big hotel, so maybe they get like this when they see hundreds of tourists every day.

On the plus side, they at least kept the restaurant open late - we ate there at about 10.20pm when we arrived later than intended (although the potato side-dish had been hanging around, but can't grumble really as I woudn't have wanted to start looking round the city for a restaurant at that time).

The buffet breakfast was good.

Had a good meal at the 4-rooms restaurant in the nearby square, and the children loved the look of the cool downstairs "chill" room - maybe one day when they're in their 20's!

Koventa Seta is a reasonably priced 3 star hotel located in the very heart of 'Vecriga', old town of Riga.

Essentially you're paying for location with this hotel but it is clean and comfortable. The hotel staff were quite reserved and quiet but also very helpful with requests we had.

Breakfast wasn't the best (in my opinion) but again, what you pay for is what you get.... It is a comfortable 3 star hotel very well located in the old town.

Overall, would class as 'good' rather than 'above average' and would recommend for those travelling to Riga on holiday.

There's not that many hotels in Riga who beat Konventa Seta when it comes to location.

The rest of it is avarage. The breakfast is ok, our room was spacy, clean and very simple.

The room did'nt had any frig - only a closet for it. So we asked for some icecubes to our water. - We don't do that service, was the answear we got.

I think that this hotel, with just a few grips, could move up a skill. Like making the rooms a bit more cozier. The easiest to start with could be with a smile or that people greats you with the frontdesk. At least look in your eyes.

It did'nt happen at all during our stay.

Went on business to Riga in June. Hotel was recommended by a colleague and was very central and in the traffic restricted zone in the city. The bedroom was good quality and the staff pleasant, if not very friendly. The breakfast was good and the general ambience of the hotel was one of comfort without being luxurious. The location is the most appealing characteristic and the lack of traffic and the very pleasant pedestrianised area means a relaxed environment.

There are some nice restaurants nearby and a plenty of bars where one can sit outside and enjoy the scenery.

Riga struck me as being expensive (and that from one living in one of Europes most expensive areas) and prices on shop windows and in restaurants do not seem to reflect a country that is still developing. It is a very beautiful city and well worth exploring with nice walks and a plentiful supply of public transport.

This hotel is all about LOCATION. A couple of steps away from Kalku Iela (main street in the Old Town), Livu Square, Centrs Shopping Center, etc.. The rooms are ok, quite big and equipped according to 3-star standards.

BUT AT NIGHT BEWARE: Avoid the rooms towards the alley way outside the Hotel. First of all there is a Disco accross the alley that will keep you up all night with a monotone thumping sound, which you can hear AND feel as well. Plus there is yelling, screaming, swearing, crying, glass breaking and virtually any other kind of noise you can imagine outside the window ALL NIGHT. This is a huge problem in summer when the windows have to stay open due to the lack of air-conditioning. We hardly slept two winks during our 2 night stay from the 19th to the 21st of July.

Staff is indifferent, same as you will find in most Latvian Hotels. But things are improving slowly, at least in Riga.

Would I stay there again? Probably yes BUT NOT in a room towards the street/alley way
