We stayed at Hotel Riga for three nights on from 16th August. We had a room on the 5th floor overlooking The National Opera House and the beautiful floral gardens. We could see all the roof tops over the city. But we noticed that they had started to put up scafolding over the pretty floral carpeted lawn. The noise started Before 7am waking everybody up with a blast from these huge speakers. This turned out to be a baseball tornament that went on all night for twenty four hours without a break, starting on the 17th August.. The noise from their boom boom speaker system was terrible. We had tripple glazing but still couldnt hear our tv, and the glass in the window was viberating. I do not know how it was allowed to take place The whole of the six storey park side of the Hotel Riga must have been awake all night. We didnt get any sleep, it was like noise torture. The next morning at breakfast half the Hotel was there at 7.30am? We were so dissapointed, we had paid to stay here, for a relaxing holiday? We had no idea that this was opart of Riga festival. Why would we have paid to put ourself through this?

Room Tip: Dont go anywhere near this hotel when Riga festival is on in August or you wont get any sleep in any...

Hotel Riga is cheap, although very average and behind the times. Although it must have been quite something decades ago, now its pretty rundown. The staff were all helpful enough, and the breakfast adequate (as is included in the price). Room anemities fall short of any modern chain hotel, barely maintained wifi throughout my stay (although free too), and there's not even tea or coffee facilities. Good thing I took the laptop as the TV channels are very basic.

At first sight, this is a hotel on a grand scale and this is not diminished on enterint the hotel where there is a charming lobby bar. Check-in was hassle-free. My room was on the top floor (6th) and afforded a fantastic panoramic view with the National Opera House to the left and the Freedom Monument and the "onions" of the Nativity of Christ Cathedral to the right. The room was functional and bathroom was clean. As others have said, however, the room was very hot at night, even with the window open. Breakfast offered a wide variety of choice to suit most tastes.
The hotel location is excellent - right on the edge of the old town and a short walk from both the railway station and the bus stop for the airport.
However, it is not what this UK traveller would call 4-star. The only English TV channel was Euronews. I attempled to use the 'Business Centre' to print off my return flight bording pass to find it contained a single very old computer and no printing facilities so I had to get reception to do it for me. Also, unusually for an East European hotel, it is entirely non-smoking (despite what it says in the information pack in the room) and this is tiresome if you're on the top floor.

When arriving at 9 we couldn't check in and had to wait for 15 minutes. There was no explanation why and the reception service was one of, the less talking-smiling-interacting, the better.

The room was extremely hot, even though we kept the window open the whole day and night.
Lots of noise in the streets and since the heat was too much and we had to sleep with the window open. This was of course not comfortable.

The curtains were absolute rubbish so all night long we had light coming in. On top of that we heard lots of noise coming from the hallway. The TV was very big, but only had 5 channels of which 2 russian and 2 german.

The breakfast was in the big hall which looks nice, but the breakfast again was not very special. In a cheaper 3 star hotel we stayed in before, it was the exact same thing.

My honest opinion: take another hotel and visit this one. You can easily walk in and have a look.

Was probably a 4 star in its day? Great location, opposite the National Opera House. I stayed for 2 nights on business and had to park my hire car, 5 mins from the hotel, for which they charge you a discounted rate of 10 lats (£11.75) per 24 hours.
Don’t expect anything modern as this has not been touched since the 1960’s (I guess) and you must take your camera before this piece of history is lost to an impending refurbishment.

It’s pointless to mention sleep quality, beds, linen & the room, as you would not be staying here if these are a must for you.

The hotel was clean and the buffet breakfast was adequate, along with the price.

Well worth a stay in this ‘Titanic’ of a hotel just to soak up the atmosphere and nostalgia before she slips under the waves and is lost forever.

PS. Their photo of the hotel would have you believe you were staying in the lovely white building, this is actually the Opera House and the hotel is the sandy coloured building to the right.

The hotel is an old Soviet style-hotel, and unfortunately not much has happened since then. The location is great, and also the space in all of the hotel. But it certainly is not a 4-star-hotel. An average 3-star I would say. The room was very old (and I had a superior one), the bathroom even older. TV with almost no international channels. The room was very big, but that was all. Nothing else to make it a 4-star-hotel.

Breakfastbuffet in a very big hall was great though. A big selection of different things.

For the price it was ok, but don´t expect 4-star-quality.

It's right in the city center. This hotel is one of those huge Soviet hotels so it has long corridors with many rooms, large foyer and a big restaurant. Rooms could use a new coat of paint but we weren't complaining because the hotel is quite cheap, although I am sure sooner or later it will turn into a 5 star hotel. Staff is a bit odd, cleaners speak perfect English while receptionists seem to prefer communication in Russian.
