This is a good choice if you are staying in the Old City.It is right next to the Dome Cathedral . We had reserved a deluxe room which turned out to be very small - so they moved us to a junior suite for no extra charge, perhaps it was because it was mid December with not many travelers. The room was in the old part of the hotel - which has very sloping floors and low beams - - charming but watch your head if you are over 5' 7" tall!! The breakfasts were superb -included in the rate and delivered to the room for a $6.00 charge if you wished - ample sized bathroom - you must specifically ask for a bath tub - - the room was very nicely decorated - no view because of the location of the hotel - We could hear the people in the room above us one night and unfortunately there were 2 children running around at 11PM with no parental control - - the bathtub overflowed and sent water cascading down into our room - the front desk people responded quickly and help us move to another room but at check-out gave us no consideration for the inconvenience - - Some of the front desk people were terrific - - some could have been nicer (we stayed 5 days) We payed about $195.00 a night. Not bad for the location which I always consider to be the first factor I look for in a hotel.

This was my second visit in the year to Riga. The previous time i never saw my hotel because they were over booked. Not a problem this time. This hotel is in the heart of the old town in a building which is part old and part modern. Remnants of the old building have been incorportated into the rooms. Friendly staff and very clean. I had a room on the 2nd floor which had a floor that might qualify as a nursery slope in a ski resort. Despite that feeling of being drunk before you have had a drink, the room was comfortable with lots of storage space, good bed, clever lighting system, fridge and TV with a few cable channels. Shower only but well equiped bathroom. The bar was souless and there are many alternatives within very close walking distance. Breakfast was simple but acceptable. At the price i got value for money and felt welcome. My taxi from the airport was 6 Lats (£6) and the hotel arranged Limo, was 16 Lats. A bit cheeky but very comfortable S class Merc. Will try some where else next time just for a change.

I've stayed in several Riga hotels and can recommend the Gutenberg over all others. It's more expensive than most, but definitely worth it. The location is central to the old Town - literally. In the cobbled streets of the old town square, there is a round bronze plaque, an official Unesco world heritage site, marking the historic centre of the city of Riga. If you threw a stone from the Gutenbergs front door, it would land pretty near this landmark.

Being used to the bright, clean but characterless rooms of chain hotels, the room in the Gutenbergs was a delightful breath of fresh air. Darkened oak beams cross the ceilings, antiqued pictured adorned the walls. The lighting was soft and subtle. There's a wel stocked fridge with mini-bar and snack. There's a small television, but I'm not one to bother much with tv when I'm on holiday.

The service is exceptional and friendly. For our stay, our rooms were attended by a young lady. She occasionally knocked on our doors to see if everything was to our liking, and to offer us sweets. A very nice touch. She left her card at then end of our stay, and we were all very hapy to leave tips.

The girls in the hotel were all very beauitful. They were more attractive than models and starlets in Britain, and were doing such menial tasks, always with a smile on their faces. Like characters in fairy tales, indeed.

Fellow guests, thankfully, were far from the beer swilling stag parties common in most other Riga hotels.

Regarding places to go nearby - too many to mention. The church in the town square playing classical musical, the Casablanca bar round the corner, and the rest of the old town on your doorstep. Staying there in Winter when it was quieter, it was always a magical walk back home at night.

Fully recommended.

This was my third visit to Riga, and the third hotel I'd tried there (the RIga Hotel being the other one I remember). Hotels are strangely expensice in Riga compared to everything else (which is very chaep), and do not seem to be the cities highlight!

We had two suites (there were three adults and three children in the party) and although they were decent size rooms, they were not huge. The rooms were not dirty, but the furniture wás not very good quality (Ikea-like). The beds were comfortable, as was the hotel in general.

For: great location (does not get better), nice reception area, attentive staff, we liked the small bar (or more precisely the barman).

Against: small/poor bathrooms (no bath), not enough space/food for the whole hotel at breakfast (although the children were happy).

At the price point, it could be the best you will get. Think I will try the Roma next!

I stayed at the Hotel Gutenbergs in Riga for a weekend with 2 other girls. The location of the hotel is fantastic, right in the heard of Old Riga on a quiet cobbled street just off Dome Square.
We were delighted with our room for 3 people, lots of space with a small sitting area, really comfortable beds and decorated in a cosy homely style with exposed beams in the ceiling, antique style furniture etc.. I think it's intended to be an old-fashioned style but everything seemed brand new which was great. There was also a well stocked (and relatively inexpensive) mini bar! Plus some nice touches like local chocolates on the pillow etc.

There were a few things we weren't 100% happy about:
- Bathroom: no shower curtain so the place got soaked every time someone took a shower!
- Breakfast: maybe it just wasn't to our Irish taste but we felt the selection of food was poor (and we would usually eat anything)
- Staff: The staff were efficient but not at all friendly

Would love to return in better weather to see the views from their rooftop bar.

Overall would recommend the Hotel Gutenbergs.
