Owner description: The Museum of the Occupation of Latvia is an historic educational institution located in Riga, Latvia. It was established in 1993 to exhibit artifacts, archive documents, and educate the public about the 51-year period in the 20th century when Latvia was successively occupied by the USSR in 1940, then by Nazi Germany in 1941, and then again by the USSR in 1944.

A little slice of history most folks are never exposed to. Not pretty or nice, but something you should know about. Docents there spoke excellent English and were knowledgeable and eager to add detail.

The museum tells the story of Latvia from the end of the First World War right up to regaining it's independence after the fall of Soviet Russia.

It gives brief details about the period between the early 20's up to being occupied by the Russians in the 40's and then how relieved they were when the Germans arrived and "liberated" them in 41. It was short lived of course as the Russians took back over in 44 and Latvia remained occupied until 91. Russia's occupation was not recognised as illegal by the rest of the world until 1996.

The museum is a reminder and a monument to those who suffered for trying to live as free people.

A good museum. Worth a visit for the history. A neat way of laying it out made it more interesting. Definite must in Riga.

Do not waste your time at this museum. There is very biased exposure. Many information about Soviet occupation, but about Nazi occupation of Latvia un 1941-1944 there is much less information.

I should really say museums as there are two locations at the moment as they are performing renovations. I went to the one at the former US Embassy first. It has some nice exhibits on the 3 periods of occupations with a fabulous introductory film which was in English, but you had other language choices. Actually for all the exhibits, you had a choice of English, Latvian, Russian or German. There was another film there on gulags. I then found out that the main location is still open and went there after lunch. It is large with a lot to see. They had the same gulag movie but also a life-sized replica of the barracks. There was also a special section on the massacre at Rumbala. The museum is well laid out with plenty of room to move around. There is a lot to see/read/look at. I definitely recommend a visit here. Depending on how detailed you want to be this could take anywhere for 1-3 hours for both museums (not including walking times). Amazingly, this is not a state funded museum and they rely on donations only.
