“the ONLY place to stay in Riga”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 30 October 2008

Six of us stayed for 3 nights at the end of september 2008, i have to say i booked this totally based on reviews on here and the reviewers were spot on.
The foyer is clean and has a free internet connection running for guest`s use, the rooms are warm and well appointed, nice bathroom, plasma tv`s and we had great views over the city.
Breakfast was brilliant, served downstairs in the cellar, the usual continental stuff plus bacon, and eggs etc, loads of cereal, youghurt and all the fresh made tea and coffee you can consume.

Outside.
we took the bus tour around the outskirts of the city, it was worth it as we boys got to see the trains in the railway museum across the river!!, most of the stuff to see is inside the old town which is right on the centra`s doorstep or a matter of a few minutes walk from the front door, the museum of the occuaption of latvia(the best museum in the city) is 2 mins walk away.
To the left outside the front door is the irish bar, which all of us hated, the beer was flat and it was full of stag nights watching EPL games, a better bet is the belgian beer cafe which is 50 yards away along the side of the centra hotel, the food was brilliant and the beer was amazing, latvian beers and a large selection of good belgian beer. However our best bet for a good drink in good company is the "backpackers pub", can`t say exactly the street but if you walk right out of the centra down past red fred`s (which was ok, at best) then turn right walk along about 100 yards its there on the right, pints of 5.0 strength beer for about £1.

Book the transfer, its the same price as a cab, around 13euro, bonus is you don`t have to stand in line, we was met with driver with our name on a clipboard, whisked straight thru and we were all in our rooms 20 mins later. You can just ask for the front desk to call you a taxi when you are ready to return, its the same fare.

Overall Riga is not as cheap as you would think, however it is alot cheaper than London, a meal will be around the £10 mark and a pint (mostly) is around the £3 mark, but with cheap Ryanair flights its a great place for the weekend, either in a group, with the lads (of girls) or a romantic geteaway.

enjoy it, we did

It's a great location to see Riga.
It's a nice hotel with an efficient staff.
I'd like to give the Centra four stars but the noise level was definitely detrimental to our enjoyment of the weekend. If my husband was writing this he would have given it a lower rating. We were knackered!

We had a great first impression. When we arrived at the hotel we were met by a friendly and very efficient chap who sorted out our reservation and brought the hospitality tray to our room (we requested it as per other reviews!) within minutes of our arrival. Off to a good start!

I should also mention that the hotel very efficiently responded to several email queries we sent before arriving. We were impressed by their care and attention.

We stayed in Suite 301 - right at the front of the hotel, two floors above street level. It was the last room available when we booked the hotel and now I know why. Given other reviews we realised that this might be a noisy area to be in - so we didn't go into this blindly and as a deep sleeper I thought it wouldn't be an issue.

What we didn't fully appreciate is that the Centra is in fact right next door to an Irish Pub (why oh why are these places in every city!?!) which seems to be a magnet for stag dos - of loudly singing English yobbos.

The suite itself was lovely - simply but nicely furnished - and the bed was comfortable but given that the staff must know just how insanely noisy it can be from 2-6am at the weekend it would be nice to provide some ear plugs to guests staying in this suite. Let me emphasise that I am a super-deep sleeper (waking me up has been compared to waking the dead!) so I don't make this observation about the sound-levels lightly & my husband said that he would never have agreed to stay here if he'd realised the extent of the noise. It really affected him badly.

We arrived so late on the Thursday that we didn't have the opportunity to pick any earplugs up & we got so caught up in sightseeing on the Friday that we didn't buy any. Big mistake on our part. Only on the Saturday did we actually manage to buy some & it made a significant difference to our sleep on our last night.

The breakfasts at the hotel were simple - fruit, cheese, bread - a few warm choices - but fine. The check out was really efficient and clear. Our interactions with the desk staff at the check-in & check-out points were by far the best. Otherwise felt that when we politely mentioned the noise level in our room that the desk staff were quite dismissive. "We ARE right in the centre" --

To be fair to them, they must hear those type of concerns fairly regularly but if they know that certain rooms are problematic then they should be a bit proactive to help their guests enjoy their stay. I guess I felt a little put out that the reply was so defensive. We've stayed in lots of places that are central and have partygoers around them & we have never had such a problem with noise. We're in our 30s and generally have a pretty mellow attitude about this stuff!

Back to the good stuff...and a few other recommendations if you're interested.

Riga is a lovely city to walk around & the hotel is in a fab location for touring the real highlights of the city - the fab churches and main square with the House of the Blackheads and Museum of Occupation (not to be missed). There are also a couple of very good art galleries - their National gallery and the more modern & funky Arsenals - a great modern Russian art show there at the moment. Going up to the 26th floor of Hotel Latvia for some sundowners is a must - the views of the city are amazing - bag a table right by the windows facing the old city if you can. We also had an amazing meal at a fantastic seafood restaurant on Richard Wagner St - can't remember its name - has some brilliant silver sculptures of fish in its windows. It's quite a traditional room with a harpist (not my first choice for music but she was great!) and some of the best fish we have ever had -- the trout is actually caught from a pool at the front of the restaurant when you place your order. This seemed to us like a place where locals came for a special evening out rather than an overly touristy place.

Getting to and from the airport...

We took a red taxi from the airport for 8 lats (the red ones have a much better reputation but they aren't always waiting outside the airport - a very nice man let us have his and called another one for himself - he was from Riga and wouldn't take the other taxis) - Our driver was great and at his suggestion rather than paying the entrance charge to the old city (vecriga) we opted to walk the final 50 metres to the hotel - so easy! Also, as other reviewers have mentioned, the 22 bus is a very easy journey to the airport and a quick walk from the hotel (the Tourism office by the House of the Blackheads showed us where to catch it)- It cost us 40 cents apiece (we had hand luggage and weren't charged for it) although this can rise to 1.20lats with proper luggage. The journey to the airport is not far and it would have been a waste of money to give the hotel 19 euros for the journey when such a good alternative is readily available (the bus goes every 20 mins and the journey is 30 mins max) The bus is fairly crowded but eventually we had seats and the route helped us see bits of Riga we wouldn't otherwise have seen - plus we used our remaining lats to buy bits and pieces at the airport.

Wonderful, clean and calm place, in the center of the old town. Professiona service. The breakfast buffet a little bit to short but good enough. The only but, as everything to me in Riga, is the price. To high for a nice city but as a lot in Europe.

A group of nine of us (4 couples and a singleton) stayed at the Centra for two nights as a short city break in Riga. The hotel is certainly very well located within very easy walking distance of all the main points of interest in the Old Town. The hotel is smaller than I expected but is smart and clean and we all liked our rooms and enjoyed our stay. I really enjoyed the breakfast buffet, but it is no 'full english' if that is what you are looking for! With the breakfast included, free wireless, quality rooms and location overall I think the hotel is excellent value for money. We used the #22 bus to and from the airport without any trouble although the bus was VERY busy with squashed standing room only. Riga itself was much more quiet than I expected. They do seem to be shifting from a centre for stag and hen parties to a cafe culture, but perhaps that is because we were there mid week.

We stayed in a suite because the price was so good! The room was really nice and very spacious. I don't remember the breakfast so I expect it wasn't great but not dreadful either. The location was very central. All in all it was a really nice hotel.
We went in March and it was cold and snowed quite a lot.
Riga as a city is nothing special but perhaps it is nicer and more vibrant in the summertime. I much preferred Prague and Bratislava. The people weren't very friendly but that might be because they are sick of Brit stag weekends (although we are couple in our 30s).
We had a great meal at the Lido atputas centr but you definitely need to get a cab - we tried to walk it and ended up in the middle of nowhere!

We stayed at the Hotel Centra for 6 days in July and we were all very happy with it. As we were a larger group, we were able to see 4 different room types and they were all very spacious and nicely decorated. The breakfast buffet was very good and everyone at the reception was extremely helpful. We will definitely stay there again.

The hotel is located in the old town of Riga at a junction of two narrow streets. It is about 30 m from the medivial St. Peter's and St. John's churches. The old town's attractions are all situated within walking distance. It takes maybe 5 minutes from there walking to get to the Cathedral or the Daugava river. There are plenty of dining and drinking options in the neighborhood (Steakhouse right cross the road (no 1A steak sauce available... what a sin) a nice little coffee shop with friendly service to the right etc., an Indian restaurant round the corner to the right etc.). There is no real dining option in the hotel itself. The hotel mainly serves a complimentary breakfast buffet that is quite good, but nothing special. The restaurant is located in the basement of the building (so no natural light downstairs).

The building looks outside like a 19th century tenement (look at picture) (restaurated maybe 5 - 10 years ago) , but inside it is modern and tastefully decorated. I was staying at the first floor overlooking from my Window the junction and having St. John's church right in front of me. Awesome view. Two very large Windows and the traditional height of 19th century 3-3.5 m high ceilings make the place feel very spacious. A mosquito net is protecting you from insects flying in if you wish to open the windows. My room was a so called junior suite with a large kig size bed, a couch with table, a writing desk and high speed internet access. There was a fully equipped mini bar available as well as two bath robes. The room was very nice indeed and very clean. The bath room was a little small, but I saw other rooms with more space in the bath room. No pool or fitness facilities available.

If you wish to go to bed early, be prepared that there is a lot of folk on the streets at night strolling from one bar or night club to the next. This might continue until the early morning sometimes. It is not really getting dark by the end of June when I was travelling there, so I recommend to join the night life to enjoy yourself a little, particularly if you're travelling in this peak season when sunset seems to be around 11:00 p.m.

Stay away from some smaller night clubs which can turn into a tourist trap. Ask for the menu first when entering and study that carefully (there might be hidden costs in small characters....) Also be careful when taking a taxi. The drivers may have manipulated the meter. They are sometimes parked in the old town taxis waiting for clients they can trick (also in front of the hotel). Ignore those and rather go to a taxi stand where there are more honest taxi drivers.

Regarding the service / check-in / and check out there is nothing to complain. I recommend to book the hotel shuttle service from the airport. It is convenient and the driver is allowed to enter the old town restricted for other individual car traffic. Generally speaking: Riga is a very nice, but also in the meanwhile expensive destination. Hotel Centra is a good choice to discover this vibrant and beautiful northern city. There is a shopping center for your daily necessities 5 minutes walk to the left (when standing in front of the hotel turning your face towards the street).

Never miss the stunning art nouveau buildings around Alberta Iela and other streets. A MUST see. And go to the covered market located in buildings originally designed as Zeppelin hangars. Amazing. And if you wish to breath some fresh sea air take a train or taxi to Jurmala beach. (about 30 minutes), the Latvian Riviera......

Enjoy Riga. I enjoyed it.
