We went to Riga to visit the Christmas market and also to go around all the old churches that the city as got we where very disappointed with the market on account of it being so small we thought it might have been bigger only about 25 stalls hardly worth going all that way

A lot smaller than we thought it would be, but still nice. Went for the Christmas Market but was a bit disappointed

We came to visit Riga because of the Xmas Market and have to say don't bother. Stalls were spread over three areas and easy to get to from our hotel. Most of the stalls were closed in the evening although the ones in the main square were open. These markets are usually really busy but not in Riga with just a few couples walking around the main one and everyone walking past the closed stalls at the others. I am not sure if the markets closed early due to lack of footfall or there was a lack of visitors as there was nothing to visit. However maybe as it was the first weekend in December it was just too early especially as they put up several Xmas trees and lights on buildings whilst we were there. We came from Manchester's packed and popular markets to really poor markets in Riga. Go and visit to see Riga itself but go elsewhere such as Prague, Stuttgart or Manchester for Xmas markets.

Old city center is really nice. Some buildings are nice and walking around makes time go faster. It is not big so it is douable on foot. You can find some nice coffy shops and rest in really nice atmosphere.

The Old City is really pleasant even on a bitterly cold day in Decmber and the Christmas market stalls where up, making it very festive.
I think it would be lovely to visit anytime of the year, there is plenty of bars, cafes and restaurants and opportunity for outside seating.
