“Shop with the Latvians!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 8 April 2012

The people of Riga took 5 zeppelin hangars from world war I and converted it into a market. Each hangar is filled with a different specialty: dairy, meat, fish, vegetables and other goods. It is a food lovers delight. Outside the market are stalls selling various every day items. Though most items are meant for home cooking and day to day life do try anything pickled or smoked meat goods.

“specialty food galore”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 27 March 2012

we went to the market not having any expectations. it was an amazing place to see and get a feel of real life in riga. the markets are not for the typical weak at heart/stomach...there are smells and sights that you will question and probably never see again....smoked fish galore, fish flopping on the counter, liver in the meat cases, cheeses, pastries, produce.....a literal feast for the senses. we bought some cheese, pastries, baltic amber and were in heaven. outside there were other vendors, we bought some rabbit fur mittens and nesting dolls....an amazing experience.

“Foodie heaven”

The Central Market was a great opportunity to find out about Latvian food. The fish hall was the most impressive. Don't forget your camera!!

“HUGE and Entertaining !!!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 16 December 2011

The one thing that struck us about this place was the enormity of it. It had to be 5 times larger than any other flea/food market that we had ever visited before. It seemed to go on for blocks and blocks, and then there were also the large hanger buildings full of vendors.

Now if you are a person only looking to buy souvenirs, clothing, or merchandise... Then this is probably not the place for you as many of the items for sale are poorer quality, usually not very fashionable, and much of it looks like it has been there for years.

However, this is the place to visit if you want to see the "personality" of Riga. It is a place where many of the locals come to pick up their fruits, vegetables, meat and fish. It is a great place to "people watch" as it is a meeting place for people of many cultures and nationalities. If you want to mix with and talk to locals, then this is the right place to visit.

A visit to Riga would not be complete without a visit to this area.

“A huge street market”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 11 December 2011

It's a huge street market, one of a kind you could find in many cities around the world. The different thing here is the size of it, with 5 pavilions. You can get good prices in food and some house stuff.
Very interesting, but maybe not a must see.
