“Absolutely Fabulous”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 29 May 2009

What a LOVELY hotel with incredible staff. Everything about our room was carefully and thoughtfully designed: plenty of storage in the bathroom, variable lighting, comfortable furniture, tons of space, striking local artwork on the wall. The people at the front desk were similarly wonderful. We told them in passing after breakfast that we were thinking of going to the Ethnographic Museum by bus. When we came downstairs ready to depart, they had printed out a schedule for us as well as a map of the bus stop. Fantastic to be supplied with something we hadn't even asked for - real old-school service in a beautifully modern hotel

The hotel is located in a very silent area, close to the old town. People of the hotel are very nice and customer oriented, Rooms are great, full of confort, clean, huge. The standard is very high and the ratio quality/price is absolutely fair. The only suggestion could be to provide for free the parking to the customers.

I have stayed at this hotel regularly on business trips.
I love the fact the rooms are really big, the beds are huge and have fabulous linen. They have Sony Bravia flatscreen TVs and a small DVD library and also a small ktchenette.

The colours are muted and tasteful and the rooms makes you feel at home, away from home. Am loving the dark staioned wodden floors!

The building is a beautifully renovated old building next to the cute Bergs bazaar, with a regular slow-food market on saturdays.

The food in the restaurant is excellent and good wines are available.

The staff is probably better than you will find in most hotels in Riga, however they are the weakest link... pretty slow, not proactive... but that is nothing new for anyone who travels in Central and Eastern Europe regularly!!

  • Liked — spacious rooms, huge beds, great design

We travelled to Riga for a special occasion, and found this hotel reviewed on the Tripadvisor website. We were very happy with every aspect of our stay. The staff were all very friendly, and helpful. The hotel is within approx 5-10 min walk of the Old Town and Central Markets. We had a Loft Suite (there were 3 of us in my party), and there was ample room! Upstairs had 2 double beds, a huge closet space and bathroom. Downstairs was a functional kitchen, and huge living area (we even had a balcony that overlooked a lovely courtyard.) There was also plenty of windows, which flooded the room in natural light.
There was also a laundry room which guests could use, which was very handy!!
This hotel would be fantastic for both short and long stays.
The hotel and room were in excellent condition. I would definately reccomend this hotel, and would stay here again.

I shouldn't write more nice things about this hotel, because last time I wanted to go there is was fully booked and I didn't get a room.

The Bergs is a privately owned hotel, the property was inherited by a local and transformed with so much care and attention to detail.

Area is just average, though it's only a 5 min walk to the parks and 10 - 15 to river/old city.

The Bergs is very quiet because the setting is shielded from the street. There a small upscale shops around it, like handmade local linen and great chocolate.
Staff (reception) was just average. But then you go to your room, and the whole hotel is filled with this old/new/asia/europe design mix.

The rooms are huge, absolutely quiet and beautiful, dark wood and subdued colours - if you like modern design, you'll love it.

Another thing to mention is that the restaurant is just excellent, I'd call it fusion cooking or at least very modern with lots of influences. The lunch menu is incredibly prices for what you get, and excellent vegetarian and fish options.

Oh, I said it's in my Top 2. The other hotel in my Top 2 is the Mandarin Oriental in San Francisco.

The BERGS Hotel in Riga wants to be a 5* "Small Luxury Hotel" at around € 300/night. But at this rating and price guest can expect real service - which isn't offered by the BERGS Hotel:

When we arrived we waited 5 minutes but nobody has shown up to bring our luggage inside, then I did it myself. Inside, at the reception, somebody was standing around to bring our luggage up. He left it in the corridore and only after asking he brought it to the second floor where the wardrobe was located.

Asking the receptionist for a guided city tour for my wife he answered: "all I can give you is a map".

When we wanted to go out for dinner (21:00) I asked to change some money, but the receptionist informed me that they don't do it. When I asked him to give me some cash and charge it to the room or to my credit card all I got was a "no". When asking how I would get some local cash he asked "nohow".

Finally we went to the high rated restaurant of the BERGS Hotel and luckily enough we got a table at the terrasse. We got the menu and were informed that they have a wide menu but that they're out of most dishes, namely ALL meat dishes and some fish dishes (at 21:00!!!). Well, we ordered something and I have to say it would have been better if everything would have been out: the food was tasteless, overcooked and just fatty.

Positive: room has guest toilet, WiFi Internet is free of charge, lage flat screen TV.

I can only recommend to stay and eat somewhere else!

We just got back from our stay at this lovely hotel. We booked a loft suite and it certainly did not dissapoint. Two bathrooms, a kitchenette with no trouble making room for our goods without the annoying "pay if you take anything out". Large upstairs bedroom with our pick of pillows, we got a pillow menu and all got a great nights sleep, a TV both upstairs and downstairs, a DVD player and we could get DVDs from the lobby. Fluffy bathrobes, slippers, towels, everything in one room we could wish for. In fact, we just did not want to leave the room at all.
But when we did, the lobby was very helpful, we were never any trouble for them it seemed. The hotel is located just a few minutes walk from the old town and inside a Bazhar of shops, mainly galleries and speciality shops. A very nice stroll to have and some good resturants tho I would not recommend Fellinis, an italian resturant there. The one in the hotel is so much better and more confortable. Also short walk to the grand market and that is worth a look.

In fact the city is pretty small and very walkable. Just dont bother the locals, they are all grumpy for some reason.

And as a last word, another plus for the hotel. They allowed us a very late check out, no questions asked ( my child was sick) and it saved the day. I very highly recommed a stay in this charming hotel.

  • Liked — The room was huge and felt like a flat.
  • Disliked — Nothing
