Clarion Collection Hotel Valdemars
Ranked #20 of 112 Hotels in Riga

Just returned home after another visit to the superb Hotel Valdemars.
From check in to check out everything was perfect, meals have a good variation something for everyone to enjoy.
I have stayed at many hotels in Riga since 2005 but for me this is the best for service price and superb reception staff.
All in all a great hotel.

After reading so many good reviews, I must say - I did not like this place, and I will not stay here again.

- The building is very big, and it had an old house smell all over. Luckily, not in a room.
- Check in and check out was extremelly slow. I had prepaid in advance, but at check-out I had to stand and wait at the desk for at least 5 min. for them to say OK.
- My room was facing the street with lots of traffic, and windows were NOT sound-isolated, so make sure you get a room away from the street.
- Do not stay there for dinner, unless you are a retired person from Sweden and want to interact with your fellows from the same country of the same age.

Receptionist was very polite, but also very slow. She was checking in another customer, and knowing how long it takes, I asked for a map of Riga (she just had to hand it over), but she asked me very politelly to wait until she was done with the customer. So yeah, finally when she was done, she could hand it over the map - this took like 2 seconds.

Good things:
- Cheap (62 EUR - booked via Gala Hotels - incl. breakfast and dinner)
- OK location (10min walk from the old town)
- free Wifi worked great
- free coffee/tea/water all day round
- good choices for breakfast. And dinner as well (different salads, 1 soup, 1 main dish), but atmosphere for dinner is not cozy

Room Tip: Stay away from the rooms facing the street, unless you love hearing traffic.

Valdemars is a modern hotel in a historical building from 1901, right in the center of Riga on a busy street. In the evening during rush hours there may be a problem to drive from airport by taxi in front of the hotel. Ask driver to use some near-by streets and walk a bit. Hotel is situated only some 10 minutes from the Old Town. Hotel has a small gym with some cardio machines and hand weights. Turkish sauna was nice after working hours. Hotel offers also a local dinner meal free of charge for hotel guests up to 21:00. It is very convenient if you do not want to go out.

An excellent hotel with far higher standards than their 3star rating would indicate. Although part of a small marketing group (Clarion Collection) the Valdemars is family owned and it shows. We were efficiently welcomed at 11pm and given an upgraded room. Apart from the excellent buffet breakfast (hot and cold) there were "make your own" waffles in the afternoon, and a complimentary evening buffet which was more than acceptable. And all this at a remarkable price through Bookings.com

Rooms at the front would get some noise but the double glazing is remarkably effective.

Some very minor points: Although tea and coffee are available in the lobby 24/7, I would have welcomed a tray in the room. Having said that, the machine in the lobby made the best cup of hotel tea ever - the water was HOT! I also found the beds too soft and "bouncy" for my taste. The "walking distances" quoted on the website (Old Town 5 min etc) are, I feel, a little ambitious though nowhere near as inaccurate as a previous reviewer suggests.

Staff were courteous and helpful throughout and nothing was too much trouble. Taking everything into account (including 5* hotels we have stayed in) my wife rates this the best overall in terms of atmosphere and value - and I don't disagree.

We are two couples that stayed in hotel Valdemars for three nights in May-13 and we had a great time. The rooms we had were not big, but they had everthing you need. The breakfast was very good. It was nice with free coffe/tea/fruit all day and waffles in the afternoon! We had the free buffet dinner one night and it was also good. The location is good and close to many nice restaurants and bars. I definetly recommend hotel Valdemars!

Very satisfied with the hotel and the room, which was a superior instead of normal room without any extra charge. Room was cool and not on a noisy street side. Breakfirst and dinner were included, also afternnon coffee. Location perfect and not far away from the old town. Personal friendly and helpful.

Spent 3 nights in this wonderful property in Riga. We drove in from Lake Trakai around mid-afternoon and were promptly checked in. The young lady at the front desk was very friendly, especially towards our 2.5 year old. She offered him some candy and made small talk with him.

The hotel is on the premises of an old family estate and it shows in the architecture - very stately, yet the new decor is also cozy and homely at the same time. The lobby is colorful and inviting and there is free tea and coffee services available for after hours. The back of the lobby opens to a nice cobbled parking area within the hotel compound and is viewable thru all glass windows, featuring a small glass elevator should you need it.

Our room wasn't all that amazing - very sparse and drab, but it was comfortable. It could definitely be spruced up to match the feel of the rest of the hotel - more light, bright colors to break the monotony. Nonetheless, the bed was comfortable - which for us is generally the most important thing, along with the bathroom.

I must say that the bathroom wasn't that nice ... could use a makeover. The water was slow to drain and the tiles felt a bit on the icky side.

I cannot remember if we had booked the dinner, but from what I remember it was offered as a freebie to us upon booking. Regardless, it felt like a very nice gesture to us, and very homely. We ate there twice and came out satisfied. Being Muslims, traveling in areas where our dining options are somewhat limited, we didn't have any problems here - there were ample of vegetarian options, and the same goes for the breakfast.

Although not SUPER close, it is an easy walk to the Old City where we spent most of our time. There are also shops all around the hotel after you cross the main street - grocery shops, restaurants, etc.

Some room for improvement for sure, but can't be faulted for a great few nights spent here.
