This small museum is dedicated to the events of January 1991, when Latvians were concerned that the Soviet Union might attempt to regain control of the country. On January 11, 1991, the Soviet Union launched a military attack against neighboring Lithuania. Two days later, the Latvian Popular Front called on citizens to barricade the Old Town to protect important buildings against any attacks. Logs, concrete blocks and construction materials were used to build barricades. Fighting broke out in Riga later in the month and at least seven people were killed. The barricades themselves stayed in front of strategic objects until 1992, after Latvian independence was officially gained on August 21, 1991.

This small museum features a recreation of part of the barricades, a map of the Dom square with indications of where barricades and campfires were, and memorials to those killed. It also has a recreation of a typical apartment kitchen in 1991.

This museum is well worth seeing, especially after the nearby Museum of the Occupation of Latvia. It's not particularly well marked; when you enter the front door of the building, go up the stairs. Admission is by donation.
