“Borsch and "Chernyavka" exceeded our expectations”
Reviewed 12 June 2014

Me and my girlfriend had 3 hours to kill before our flight home. Prior to Uncle Vanya we visited 3 other restaurants in Riga those were recommended by TripAdvisor users and were quite disappointed.
My girlfriend had Borsch and I had "Chernyavka"(if I remember correctly) dessert with Latte and those were the best soup and dessert we had in Lavija.
We ate on the outside but interior looked very cosy, not orthodox Russian interior, but very nice.

We regret not finding that place in the beginning of our visit to Riga.

"Beauty will save the world" Dostoevsky's Prince Myshkin does say, and Tevocis Vania is first of all a beautiful place to stay and dine. Elegant atmosphere, wooden tables, chairs and sofas separated by shelves of books, old photos on the walls, traditional Russian music in the background, a charming service. The cuisine is good: after the appetizer courtesy of the house, we appreciated a tasty borsch and a strogonoff filet. At the end we were advised to try the Polugar, an excellent spirit that was the last surprise of a restautant where, once you get in, you wouldn't want to get out.

“A really great experience”
Reviewed 1 June 2014

So glad they had space for us here. We had booked next door (three knives) but when we got there, the loud disco music was an instant turn off & we left...straight into Uncle Vanya's. Luckily there was one table left only. The wine list was the best I've seen in Riga with a Ripasso for €20 & Amerone & Chateau Margaux for €37. These wines would cost double that in the UK and actually in a lot of other Riga restaurants too. The service was excellent, attentive without being annoying. The food was really good with a complimentary pate served before the starters. Fish dumplings were amazing. The meal was complimented with the most beautiful music I've ever experienced in a restaurant. Two guys playing what I think was old Russian folk tunes, some lively, some haunting, the violin player was just brilliant & the older man singing had a fabulous voice. I wanted to buy a CD but they didn't have one. We left here with a happy glow.

“Nice stuff, nice food ”

TevocisVana/ Uncle Vanya- Russian cuisine
Cosy atmosphere. Smell with fresh coffee.
Complementary pre-starter
Password for wifi "talktoeachother"
Fish soup- very tasty, but would be better to have it a little bit wormer.
Pork filet with mushroom's souse - just good.
One thing is a wet blanket - old Russian music. Personally don't like it at all...even understand that it is this restaurant - Russian roots.

“Good food and Good value”
Reviewed 27 May 2014

Food was very tasty and was not overpriced. We dined inside as it was cool that evening. It was very comfortable and the décor was attractive.
The only downside was the drinks. The glass of Chardonnay that was served was not good and was returned but we were still charged for it. The beer is advertised at a volume of 0.5L but when you receive it, it is only 0.4L. When questioned I was told that it was a mistake but only persistence got me what was ordered! Having given the downside, I would go again being aware of the shortcomings with the drinks.
