Had a wonderful trip for two nights. Despite unexpectedly early arrival to the hotel, check-in was ok even at 10a.m. Nice surprise! Well-spoken and very friendly staff. Clean and comfortable room (classic double).

Breakfast was more than ok, porridge, all kinds of cheeses, etc. Lobby bar offers wide range of drinks and fine cigars.

Location:
We couldn't have asked for a better location. The hotel is located in the Old Town and is close to most main attractions. It is also near the Galerija Centrs shopping centre, in which there is a Rimi supermarket, making it very easy to purchase everyday necessities. The central train and bus stations are about a 10 minutes walk away, with the option to do several day trips out of Riga (we went for a hike in Sigulda, about 90 minutes from Riga by train).

Check-in and check-out:
Both were very efficient. We arrived around midday and though check in time is 2pm, our room was ready and we were able to leave our luggage before going out to explore. Check out was also equally fast and efficient.

Room:
Our room was fairly small but normal for European standards. We only had a shower in the room but it had good water pressure.

Food:
Breakfast was provided with the room and it was very good, with a selection of hot and cold breakfast dishes. We also spent a sunny afternoon at the Gutenberg rooftop restaurant, which was extremely enjoyable. The food and service were excellent and the rooftop afforded some beautiful views in the late afternoon sun. The other memorable meal we had was at Neiburgs, again the food and service were impeccable.

Other comments:
AirBaltic has a very convenient network of buses and taxis, available for fixed rates. It costs 10LVL (£15) each way for a taxi from the airport to the Old Town.

I had a Classic Double room for one person in the newly renovated part of the building. The room was beautiful, large, with a real double (probably queen size) bed, well equipped and had a full buffet breakfast included in the price. It was a good value. It was pretty much as shown on the hotel website. It was in the perfect location for seeing the old town sights and an easy walk from the bus station.

My complaint is that although the room was non-smoking, the rooms in the new section open to a nicely designed outdoor courtyard where smoking is allowed. Since the air conditioning hadn't been turned on for the season, I liked to have the windows open. This then means that not only does smoke from the courtyard users drift into the room, there is also noise from conversation. It's really my only complaint. Although I asked to be moved to a higher floor, the extra couple floors didn't help the noise and smoke situation.

Myself and my boyfriend stayed here for three nights. The hotel is located in a great location inside the old town. The room was furnished nicely, but was a bit on the small side. We had a room facing the inside of the courtyard, which wasn't great.

Whilst we were there the bar was closed for renovations, which was a disappointment although you could have drink inside the restaurant. Breakfast was great, with a large selection. Staff were always friendly.

All in all, we enjoyed our stay at this hotel.

We decided to come to this hotel having read all the good reviews. We were sadly disappointed. We came by bus (Luxbus—very good) from Tallinn, having stayed in the Bern Hotel. This hotel just does not measure up to the Bern in Tallinn. What the hotel has done it spent a lot on pretentious gewgaws, but is extremely chintzy on necessities. Example: no Kleenex or shower cap in the bathroom, the slippers and bathrobes are available only for 10 Euros extra. A call to the front desk after a lot of back and forth discussion (what is Kleeenex?) produced an open half-used box of Kleenex. There are tacky curtains, mirror in the room, chandelier, fake Tuscany ambiance and colors, but limited storage space, poor, small old TV. Cheap pictures on the wall, no place to put luggage (the room is way too small.), only one chair, uncomfortable bathroom, (but has bathtub and good shower.) The toilet seat does not stand up, no place to put things down, no shelves . Towel’s quality very poor. There is a sign in the bathroom: “a penalty to sit on the ledge (a useless space beyond the bathtub, the only place to put things on, but gets wet with a shower) is 100 Littas.” Room instruction: “we are not responsible for loss of valuables”, however, no safe in the room, no “do not disturb sign”. Our room was in a second house (you had to go outside to get to the house.). No fitted bed sheet, sheet just slides off the mattress. Only two glasses in the bathroom, none in the room, there is a bar/refrigerator in the room with plenty of space.
Free wireless in room.
Breakfast: Most things on the cheap side. (Espresso, not bad.) No fish, tiny pieces of cheeses. Fruit, a limited selection of yoghurts, no nuts of any kind. All on the cheap…

I stayed at this hotel for four nights. I booked a single room, but received a spacious room with a queen sized bed. There was a desk that was not very useful, as the mini bar was located under it and on the other side, there was a pole (load bearing?) that kept me from being able to pull out the chair to sit in it. I ended up having to move the chair in front of the mini bar when at the desk, but couldn't comfortably sit to use the desk.

There was a large flat screen television on the wall and a rack for your suitcase, in addition to a wardrobe and an in-room safe. I had some problems with the safe, as it would sometimes open right after I locked it, but ultimately, was able to reprogram the code each time and get it to work. An iron & ironing board were included, as well as a hairdryer.

The bathroom was a good size and had a nice sized vanity for all of my personal items, as well as a makeup mirror. The shower was also large and the bathroom had radiant heat under the floor, which was very nice.

Breakfast was served on the bottom floor in a nice-looking "restaurant". Items offered varied somewhat each day, but typically included hot oatmeal and cold cereals, breads, cheeses and meats, fried eggs, "omlettes" which looked and tasted like cheesy scrambled eggs, a breakfast meat, "pancakes" that were like plain crepes, pastries, coffee & tea. It was all very good.

There is a computer in the lobby area, tucked away in a corner behind a sofa and two chairs, and use of the internet on it is free. This is nice for checking email, the weather, opening hours for sightseeing, etc. On the other side of the lobby is a small bar, which I did not visit, but it looked comfortable and was nearly full in the early evening hours on each day of my stay.

The hotel is half a block from a large shopping mall that has a grocery store (Rimi) on the bottom floor. It's a good place to pick up water, etc instead of paying the mini bar prices. It's also located in the heart of the Old Town, in walking distance to many good restaurants and coffee shops. All the sights in the old Town are within a 15 minute walk, so public transportation isn't really needed unless you want to get out of the Old Town.

the AirBaltic airport shuttle stops at Hotel Riga, which is on the same street and is a cheap, convenient way to get to/from the airport. A farther walk will get you to the bus station for an even less expensive trip to the airport, but if you have to roll a suitcase in the snow and ice, I recommend paying the extra for the Air Baltic airport shuttle.

Although right in the heart of the Old Town, the hotel was quiet. It was in a safe area and I never felt concerned about walking around at night (solo female traveler) to get dinner at a nearby restaurant.
