Just returned from Europa Royale Riga. A stunning hotel situated opposite a lovely park. The history is explained in a detail in the room literature and is a fascinating read. The room was very quiet and spacious and overlooked a courtyard. The bathroom was big. The cleanliness was second to none. The staff we found to be very helpful, nothing was too much trouble for them. In the evening the bar staff were happy to chat about life in Riga and their travels. The restaurant food was splendid, it was artly presented and very tasty. The breakfast were also very good with plenty of cooked and cold buffet to choose from, albeit in a reserved atmosphere. We took our coffee and croissants outside on the terrace as the weather was very warm and sunny. One complaint we had was paying 3 lats for bottled water in room, hence, a trip to a local supermarket where we purchased the same for under 1 lat. Trams stopped outside the hotel and cost flat fare of 50 cents per person. Buy ticket from driver and then get it puched in yellow machine.

Having independently booked this hotel with an anticipated arrival time of 5.00pm, we were concerned when our flight times were altered twice, courtesy of Airbaltic, changing our arrival time to past midnight. We e-mailed the hotel, to advise them of our anticipated very late arrival hoping that this would not cause problems.

Arriving at the hotel, at such a late hour, we were immediately greeted by a young male receptionist who proceeded to check us in. We were advised that we had a superior room overlooking the park opposite the hotel. We were informed that should the traffic noise prove problematic, the room could be exchanged for a similar but quieter room at the side of the building without a problem. (We had no difficulties with the room).

The room was large and spacious with all facilities.

In the breakfast room, we were greeted on arrival every morning by very attentive staff. The breakfast buffet was excellent, regularly replenished and included within the overall price. (The museli was superb).

On our departure day, we had an early flight so we went to breakfast as usual. Not realising it was a Bank Holiday, the buffet had not been fully set up. Without hesitation, a waitress asked us to take a seat and help ourselves to what was available. Virtually immediately, the remaining items were brought out by the other members of staff whereby opening the buffet about 20 minutes early.

This is a traditional style hotel with excellent standards.

We would highly recommend the Europa Royale to any one visiting Riga and will certainly use this hotel should we return to Riga.

We stayed at this hotel for 3 nights in June, as a 'treat' at the end of our holiday. We had high hopes for a 4 star experience, but ended up disappointed. On the plus side, it is very well located and has many original 19th century features, including a very nice dining room and lovely seating areas on some corridors. Clearly, from reading other reviews, some rooms are much better than others. However, we did not think the facilities in our room or hotel were up to a 4 star hotel. Our first room was quite nice, though it had a view mainly of a wall and smelt of stale tobacco. However, the main problem was a lack of 'crowd control' by management. In the middle of our first night we were woken by loud noise as a group of around 4 people came back (clearly drunk) to the neighbouring room, and proceeded to have an impromptu party. After this had gone on for a while, we phoned reception, who said they would ask them to be quieter. After another 30 minutes or so of putting up with very loud talking from next door with no sign of intervention from staff, we went down to reception and asked to change rooms. We were allocated to a different room, but we received no apology for the inconvenience and were given a smaller room on the top floor, which had virtually no windows. No-one accompanied us to our new room to check we were happy with this, or offered to help us move our luggage, possibly because there were not enough staff around(?). The new room was also full of flies (about 10 of them) which we then spent around half an hour (at 4am!) chasing out of the room. At breakfast the next morning (after a very bad night's sleep) the classical music in the background was interrupted so that a heavy rock track by Motorhead could be played (presumably in response to a request from one of the guests who needed to shift a hangover??), thereby spoiling the beautiful setting. Things did improve on the following two nights, but our overall impression was of an under-managed hotel, with a small number of young staff trying their best to be helpful but being a bit out of their depth. As a result, we would not choose to stay here again.

The Europa Royale is a careful conversion of a magnificent late 19c mansion and a key historic building, centrally located near the Opera House. Some of the detailing is very good and the overall impression is luxurious. However, the general atmosphere is somewhat gloomy - different colours and better lighting would help. There is a small courtyard which would be pleasant in good weather.

Our room was spacious but sparsely furnished (just one upright chair!) The wallpaper was a depressing dark blue. The bathroom was also large but lacked shelving. Housekeeping was somewhat sloppy.

The dining room (Benjamins) is splendid and the breakfast buffet extensive. Our dinner had more style than substance.

After two nights, we left with the feeling that this property has five star potential but that it needs a physical makeover and better management to realise it. For now, it’s just about four star.

The Europa Royal is truly a house boasting with history.

The interior beautifully restored with fantastic details of architecture of the late 1880ties and the level of comfort is just great. It is truly a pleasure to stay in a small hotel yet "large" old house.
The location is also great and nothing negative can be written of this very nice, clean, well kept place apart from the in-room breakfast that was really nothing more than mistakes and dry bread. The breakfast in the breakfast room was very nice though and the service good. Basic good food in a very nice setting. The hotel resolved the matter after direct and firm criticism, and we were happy as can be. One thing to mention; the "Casino" is a room with slot machines :-)

We would stay there anytime again as the house itself, the location and the service was everything we could ask for in a four star hotel at the rate we were offered.
