Just returned from a 3 night break to Riga with two other couples. The Europa is ideally situated for the old town, a 10 minute stroll from the Opera and the Freedom Monument. The rooms were spacious with either a double or 2 twin beds, large bathroom with bath and shower, everything was spotlessly clean, and the receptionist couldn't have been more helpful, as our flight wasn't until late evening we organised a late check out for a small fee. Our room overlooked the courtyard and was quite peaceful, although 2 of our friends were nearer the fron room and were slightly troubled by noise from the trams. Breakfast had just about everything you could want and was served at a reasonable time. We all enjoyed Riga and the Europa Royale, in fact the only complaint was that the key cards needed re-coding daily.

Ideally located the hotel has attractive public spaces particularly the terrace on a warm sunny day. The desk staff are efficient and helpful and the rooms are of a reasonable size and clean and the beds are comfortable. Our bathroom was quite large and because of a large window nice and bright. Our teenager's bathroom was too dark. The windows effectively keep out the tram noise from the street. The rooms are decorated in dark colours which can make them seem a little gloomy and the lighting is poor. There are fixtures and lamps but the wattage on the bulbs is so low (or they are burnt out) that we resorted to a flashlight to find things in our suitcases. The reading lights are dim enough to make sure you give up that novel and go to sleep early! Breakfast was good. We did not use the dining room prefering a quick walk back in to old town. All in all a comfortable hotel that could use a just little more attention to detail.

We really liked this hotel, particularly the building, its grand staircases, coffered ceilings, balaustrades and tall ceilings, very atmospheric! The location is very convenient too, 2 mins walk to both the Od Town and the commercial Centre, with a park across the road a tram stop round the corner... Having booked an internet deal some time in advance, including a sumptuous buffet breakast that served as our introduction to dozens of baltic speciaities, it was fantastic value too!

I stayed at this hotel for 4 nights last week and liked it very much. The aircon worked well, although my room faced the road I was not disturbed by the traffic, personnel very helpful, especially one girl (with long dark hair) at reception who printed us maps to find the main station in Jurmala and a shopping centre. In contrast to one review the furniture in my room was new but classic style in keeping with the extremely beautiful building, my friend's room's furniture as well, everything very clean, and no noise from neighbours. I also didn't see any dark corners in this hotel as mentioned in some reviews. I liked to come back to the hotel in the evening because it was quiet and restful after a day out in the bustling town. As a whole, the population in Latvia is very friendly, we never felt threatened. We were amazed how clean Riga was compared to western european cities. For me the most impressive were the Art Nouveau buildings in Alberta Street etc. The hotel's location is perfect. One can walk to the old town easily and also to the Art Nouveau district. The railway station is a few minutes walk away and the opera as well. Can recommend!

15 days ago I came back from Riga and I’m still sick because of my stay in this hotel.
To tell the truth there are some good thinks about the hotel. It’s well located, close to both Old Riga and the modern commercial and shopping area. The building is in great art nouveau style, one of the best of Riga. The lobby, the restaurant and the bar are gorgeous and greatly decorated.
Our deluxe twin room (205) was spacious with excellent view, plasma TV and double windows (YES!!!) to reach the maximum soundproofing, because Barona Street is very central. The bathroom was spacious too and well equipped with bathrobes, slippers and bathtub.
BUT!
Although they didn’t let us smoke not even in the bar there was in the lobby a sickly smell of cigar every evening.
Our spacious room was almost empty with some old and miserable furniture and without not even a small carpet on the floor. The walls and the floor were probably made from paper. We could hear clearly the sound of the water from the other rooms and whenever someone was walking in the corridor the whole room was shaking.
The ladies who cleaned our room did do their best but the 3 days that we accommodate there they didn’t change our towels, due to the hotel policy! If you want clear towels, you must throw the old ones on the floor, but before that, you must think that the use of detergent is very dangerous for the planet!!! YES!!! Something like that was written in the bathroom!!!!
The staff (with just one or two exceptions) was impolite, unhelpful, unfriendly and with very basic knowledge of English. Especially the behavior of the woman in the breakfast is a shame for every hotel!
But the biggest problem was that the room was COLD, COLD, COLD like a refrigerator! Yes! We were in Riga from 18 to 21 May but the temperature during the night was between 4 and 7 Celsius degrees and the central heating of the hotel was CLOSED! Even the water in the bathroom was just warm, not hot!
We complained twice and the guys in the reception were kidding at us by pretending that they fixed the air condition, which made only a disturbing noise without actually working!
The third time we complained the receptionist tall us that he couldn’t turn the heating system on but at least brought us a very small heater (which was impossible to heat such a big room) and turn the floor heating in the bathroom on but in so low temperature that the tiles remained cold. Only the last night I turned it to the maximum and the next day the tiles were warm!
Because of this situation I caught a bad cold that turned into pneumonia.
O.K. If you think that an art nouveau building, a spacious room with park view and a bathrobe are all that you need, go there and ask for a deluxe room (the standard ones are small and with less still comforts and with a WALL VIEW). But if you think that there are more important things for a pleasant stay go elsewhere! Riga is plenty of hotels. I’m sure that you can find a much better hotel in the same price!
TIP: The “welcome drink” is a big and cheap trick! To drink only a glass of wine you must eat in the very expensive restaurant of the hotel!!!!
Sorry Europa Royale but you must work very hard if you want to become a real 4 stars hotel!!!!!

Flew into Riga for the first time with a friend, my sister and my daughter. This hotel was rather quiet looking, nothing flashy. The rooms were comfortable, if a little small, but very clean. My sister had a large beam going through the middle of hers that was a little annoying. Location was ok, not in old town, but after flying in and then exploring all day, we just decided to eat dinner at the hotel. Wasn't bad, but forgettable. Wasn't sure what to expect for breakfast the next morning, but was very pleasantly surprised. It was wonderful, and made the stay at the hotel worth it. Will use it as comparison forever! I like to try other hotels when traveling, but would spend a night or two just for the breakfast! Front desk staff very nice and helpful.
