Monika Centrum Hotel
Ranked #11 of 112 Hotels in Riga
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 6 July 2012

Hotel Monika Centrum offered great service during our four days vacation in Riga. It's conveniently located about 1,5 kilometers or 10 minutes walk from the old town of Riga.

There are a few restaurants very nearby, even though this embassy area of Riga was peaceful in the evenings.

Taxi to the old town cost about 4 LVL, but you can walk there easily through the park too.

Breakfast was better than usually in 3-star city hotels; several types of cold cuts, breads, vegetables, fruits and eggs. There were also bacon, some sausage and yoghurt. I also liked their apple and orange juices and coffee, and breakfast being available until 10 AM (on weekdays) and 11 AM (on weekends). The breakfast was quite crowded, though.

Some reviews touted spacious rooms, but our standard 2-persons room on 4th floor room was very small. It was clean and had a balcony, so I was satisfied.

The staff was friendly and spoke English well enough. They offered good tips about getting a taxi and popular restaurants nearby.

The red sightseeing hop-on-hoff-of bus stops just next to the Monika Centrum hotel. It was a handy way to see the most popular places for the first time.

The hotel offers a complimentary wireless network (WiFi) for guests. It worked very well in the lobby and our 4th floor room.

It was quite quiet during our stay, so the lobby bar was mostly empty during our stay. it was interesting to note drinks were more affordable there than in our minibar.

Hint for first time visitors in Riga: If you uss a taxi; choose the green or red ones who really drive based on a meter. Otherwise remember to negotiate the price in advance. We were charged 27 LVL for taxi from the airport, when the approriate price would have been around 10 LVL.

Hint 2: Vincent's Restaurant is just a few meters walk from the Monika Centrum hotel. It offered our best fine dining dinner in Riga. It's quite expensive, but worth the money for special occasions.

Room Tip: Ask for a special room with a balcony and with more space.

We stayed five nights and were upgraded to a junior suite upon arrival. Location is in the middle of the art nouveau district and just 5-10 minutes walk to the old town through the beatiuful park - a take one of the five buslines stopping 100 meters from the hotel. Small kiosk across the street selling beer, fresh drinks, snacks and bus tickets until late. Good restaurants close by. Room large and perfectly kept, noise insulation towards the street keeps room completely quite. Nice spacy bathroom. Excellent wi-fi connection in room free of charge. Good breakfast with sufficient variety of choice. Absolutely recommendable.

Right on the door step for some of the best Art Nouveau buildings in Riga including the Art Nouveau museum. Bit of a walk to the Old Town but really enjoyable/pleasant to wander there and back through the delightful Bastejkalns Park which has numerous status and memorials including a section of the Berlin Wall (just down from the Hotel on Elizabetes iela/Street
Nice continental style breakfast - very pleasant room & bathroom very comfortable

We liked everything about the hotel, located in embassy quarter of Riga, not far away from Old Town. The short stroll to the center, through the embassies, was amazing. From our window were some art nouveau buildings. Room was a bit small but location, and very good breakfast (with salmon) did more than just make up for this. For the price we received (50 Euros - non refundable - booked just some days in advance) I doubt there was a better choice in Riga. There is a supermarket 50m away where we bought some souvenirs of Riga.

I travelled with my female colleague (2 females), I booked for us a twin room and got a confirmation for it. BUT- we got a single room with small 120 cm bed with one small blanket. The guy from the reception said "sorry, we are fully booked and this is our standard double room". Can not believe that 4* hotel has in the double room only one 120 cm bed with one small blanket. Finally we got a small 90 cm extra bed and 2 coffee coupons for a compensation. We had to change our door keys 3-4 times because they did not work.
Only good thing was a breakfast- it was excellent. But I will not use this hotel again and I do not recommend it to anyone.

We took advantage of an overnight special which included a 3-course dinner, access to the sauna and buffet breakfast. Overall it proved to be excellent value.

The Good:
- Spacious rooms (I've stayed in 2 other hotels in the centre of Riga and this was by far the largest room), even if the bathroom was oddly small.
- Fantastic breakfast buffet - by far the best I've found for 4* hotels in Riga.
- Air-conditioning
- Modern fixtures and fittings (TV etc.)
- Friendly and helpful staff
- Clean rooms and public areas

The bad:
- Ludicrously expensive bar prices for a place that isn't anything at all special to sit in.
- On the outskirts of the old town, but a pleasant walk through a nice park if the weather is decent.
