The hotel is superior to its surroundings, bright and clean with a good breakfast. Our visit unfortunately was spoilt because, firstly, the Google map had given an incorrect location and in fact we found it was twice as far from town than we had expected. In fact it is over the railway line, among derelict buildings. The name is on the roof but not easily visible from the road - look for Sunny Restaurant on the left hand side of the road as you come from the city centre. Then we were affected by groups who on one occasion had been allocated breakfast slots which left only 45 minutes for all individual guests. One particular group consisted of dog fanciers whose pets stayed in the bedrooms, barked at all hours and were walked around the public areas of the hotel.

This was our second visit to the hotel and it was every bit as good as our last visit. (Read down about 3 reviews to find our previous review). Just a few updates this time.

Food is still as good and superb value for money.

Note that the hotel has just changed hands - lets hope the new owners keep up the high standards.

The new owners have discontinued the free tickets to the jazz bar but at 5 lats entry its still good value for top quality entertainment.

The public transport situation has changed slightly. The same busses/trams and trolleybusses stop outside the hotel but they now work on electronic tickets. (You can still buy a paper ticket from the driver though). Best bet is on arrival at Riga airport, go up to the departure floor left side and go into the "Pluspunkts" newsagent. For about 6.70 lats each they will sell you a plastic card valid on all types of public transport for 5 days. Swipe it on the reader every time you get on a bus or tram and you will get a bleep and a green light (you can keep it in your purse or wallet when swiping, it doesnt damage your other cards).

Another change to public transport is that the 22A bus has been discontinued. You now have to get the number 22 from behind the airport car park (3 min walk). This one runs to the train station where you can change onto one of the trams/trolleybusses to the hotel. We had some trouble finding the stop for the return journey - best way seemed to be to look for the Stockmans department store and it's on the opposite side - the furthest of the 3 or 4 stops.

One final point about the hotel - we discovered that not all rooms are air conditioned. It didn't matter in November but this time it was 28 degrees. We asked at reception and they moved us after the first night to an air-con room with no fuss and no extra charge. Worth asking if the hotel is not full.

Stayed here for 3 nights in April 09. Staff were friendly, and so helpful. The room was great, a huge bed, TV, minibar, Air Conditioning did not work but not really needed in April when the window could be opened! Bathroom and room were clean, the only thing if we were to be really picky was the shower curtain was discoloured. Each floor has a different colour scheme, ours was red and everything is red! We ate in the restaurant one night which was superb, and the breakfast provided was good.

The hotel is opposite a Tram 6 stop and a number of trolleybus and bus stops so getting into the center costs 0.50Ls and there is a tram about every 5 min. Taxis aren't needed at all, just make sure you don't catch a depo tram which doesn't complete its journey and stops one stop before the hotel.

Wasn't sure what to expect from this hotel - we picked the cheapest we could find without it being a hostel and although the reviews were reasonable I wasn't expecting great things!

However, I thought this hotel was fab for the price! It has a quirky retro style all of its own and every floor has a different colour theme - we had to stop in every floor in the lift so we could check them all out!

The rooms were a good size, clean and well presented. There was also a mini-bar in the room, which was not too badly priced. There was a bar on the top floor - stopped in quickly and it had good live music, although there was a fee for entry at the weekend which put us off going on these nights.

Breakfast (included in the price we paid) was a large buffet - hot sausage, egg, bacon, bacon rolls (latvian style), beans, toast, cold meats, cereals, bread, croissants - a huge choice and more than enough to keep us full all day.

Staff at reception were great - spoke good english, gave good advice and even gave a few smiles (staff at breakfast weren't quite so forthcoming, although not unfriendly!).

Location - about a 40 minute walk into the main centre/ old town. We chose to walk it most days - it was a great way to see the city and get a sense of where we were. However, there is also a tram stop right outside the hotel - less than a pound into the town and about a ten minute ride.

Can't think of many down points of this place - only thing is the location. If you want to be really central then this isn't the place for you - but it's cheap/ easy to get into town and the price more than makes up for this minor inconvenience!

Had a great stay!

With this being my first time in Riga I wasn’t sure what to expect. I must say this hotel was no way a disappointment in fact it was top class!

The hotel is about 10 minutes away from the city centre by tram. We got a taxi from the airport which cost 20Lvl. The hotel do however have their own taxi service which costs 15Lvl, so that’s worth knowing.

The outside of the hotel looks odd, with porthole windows and material which makes the building look like a prefab. Inside however it’s a different story. The whole hotel is very contemporary and decorated in fantastic bright colours. The spaceship style restaurant was excellent. The check in was smooth with no hassle and all the staff were very friendly. They even lent us an umbrella on out first day!

The room is comfortable and spacious, with a large bathroom. There was digital TV although mostly Russian and Latvian channels.

We tried the restaurant one night and must say the food was magnificent and reasonably priced. Usually hotel food is expensive and average but this was much better than any UK hotel I have stayed in.

The location is great for getting into the city with frequent trams at 50c per person. This is a great base for exploring this beautiful city and further a field in Latvia. Absolutely brilliant, I will certainly come back to Riga and try other Europa cities if I re visit central or Eastern Europe!

Rooms are clean and modern.
Afternoon buffet is excellent and really good value for money at 5 LVL.
Don't accept a room on the 5th floor. This is just undeneath the Jazz Bar. They hire it out for private parties and the noise is unnacceptable.
The Jazz bar has an entrance fee of 5 LVL if they have a Jazz band on.
Tram ride to the centre is about 15 mins and costs 40 cents each way if you buy your ticket at the news kiosk. If you buy your ticket on the tram it costs 50 cents.
The hotel claims that it provides airport transfers. In fact, all they do is order you a taxi. This costs 13 LVL each way.
All in all, not a bad hotel.

We wanted to go somewhere for a couple of days, and found cheap tickets to Riga with AirBaltic. Airbaltic.com provides a hotel booking service from hrs.com, so I searched through the hotels and found Europa City. After reading good reviews on tripadvisor, I checked several online booking-services, but none could match the price from HRS, and we even got an additional night for free, so we paid around 150€ for double room for four nights.

Our plane arrived at about 2300, so we had contacted the hotel and asked if they had some kind of airport transfer-service. They offered this for a price of 13LAT each way, which I think actually is a bit cheaper than ordering a taxi on your own. Not to forget how good it is to just see your name on a piece of paper, instead of having to sort out everything when you arrive late.

The hotel is quite a bit away from the city center, but it couldn't have been easier to get to it. The tram has a stop directly in front of the hotel, and you easily buy tickets at the Narvesen kiosk to the right. The tram went almost all the time, all day, and took about 10-15 minutes to the old town.

The hotel seemed almost brand new. Very nice design and decorations, and very little sign of use. The room almost seemed as it never was used before.

Breakfast was also included in the price, and the buffet was more than enough for us. Good selection of bread and other things, and the large plates of fresh watermelon were very welcomed.

The service from the hotel staff wasn't over the top, but we didn't meet upon any real trouble. We asked for another pillow, which came pretty quick, and when our key didn't work they fixed that pretty fast too. However, this is something I feel was the same everywhere we went in Latvia. The service was good where it was supposed to be, but there weren't really much friendliness and personal contact. I guess they're just not used to it.

When it comes to Riga, I found it a beautiful town. There was loads to see, and a lot of cheap shopping as well. Not to mention the cheap and excellent food we had. The city felt safe everywhere we went. We also took the time for a day-trip to Jurmala, which was OK, but very windy that day.

Overall I will absolutely recommend this hotel for everyone that wants a cheap and good hotel, and don't mind the little tram-trip when you want to get to the city center.
