We stayed at Islande Hotel in Riga, Latvia for 2 nights during Midsummer. The hotel itself was ok, nice Scandinavian style decor and clean, but there were some minor problems with service level. For example, all rooms should be non-smoking (smoking is widely prohibited in Latvia), but we had an ashtray located in the room and room stank of cigarettes. Easily solved problem though - we just bought an air freshener from the local supermarket...

We wanted to go to sauna and spa on Saturday morning, but it was closed due to technical problem - otherwise this could be acceptable, but reception personnel didn't mention this to us, even though the problem with the spa had occurred days earlier.

The breakfast was versatile and tasted good, hotel was located close to Old Riga, supermarket and bus stops and there was no noice or other kinds of disturbance. Overall, I can recommend Islande to other travellers.

Hotel is in pretty good condition as it's new. Lobby and restaurants look very nice. Some pros and cons:

+location could be closer to old town but 15 mins walk is tolerable though via an ugly bridge with heavy traffic. Recommended is to use busses which operate right next to hotel and only costs 0,3 LVL. Shopping centre with supermarket Rimi close by a clear advantage
+bowling facilities
+rooms pretty big and modern, if you are lucky you can get a room which nice river view which we though didn't.
+price is reasonable

-we were given a non-smoking room in which they had been smoking. Smell was evident.
-sauna was not in function and receptionist didn't mention anything about it to guests or at least to us. Spa looked very nice from the pics but costs quite a lot to use. Morning sauna should be free, had it worked.
-popular among tourist bus groups and if you end up in the restaurant same time as they do, forget about service that varies in general a lot, in many respect

My mate and I stayed here for a long weekend and the hotel did it's job.

From the city it's about a 10-15 min walk across the Daugava to the old town. You can also get a taxi, which will cost from either 2 to 5 Lats.

We didn't get any breakfast from the hotel as we were always arriving in from a night out.

The rooms were ok, a bit basic which was proberly the norm for a Scandinavian hotel. But they always got cleaned and the beds were comfortable enough - which was good. The facilities were also good, the best being a 6 lane bowling alley, which came in handy on the last day. As the flight home was late at night :-)

Overall I would recommend this hotel to anybody who is planning a trip to Riga :-D

Whenever you go somewhere like Latvia, choosing the right hotel is total guess work, but on this occasion I struck lucky.

Although a 15 minute walk from Old Riga, don't be put off choosing this hotel as it is 1st class. Only finished in March 2006 it's new enough to feel brand new, but old enough to have ironed out all the minor problems that are notorious with newly built hotels.

For approx £45 per night I stayed in a superb room that would cost £100+ in the UK. Everything was spotlessly clean, everything worked, and the view over the river was amazing.

I stayed at this hotel with two friends Tues-Friday and to say the hotel was quiet is an understatement! In four days I didn't meet a single person in the corridors and felt like I had the place to myself, hence three very good nights sleep (unheard of for me in a hotel!). I was told by the barman that things liven up at weekends!

There is a quiet but attractive bar on the groundfloor where a pint of lager costs around £2. There is also a five lane ten-pin bowling alley, two pool tables and a dart board. Also on the groundfloor is a fancy restuarant which I didn't eat in so I cannot comment. On the 9th floor is another fancy restaurant which has amazing views of Riga at night, but as I only drank in there I again cannot comment on the food. There is also a Spa and a gym on the 10th floor. The gym is pretty small so don't go expecting a Next Generation or Virgin gym!!

I would recommend this hotel to anyone who doesn't mind a 15 minute walk into town. It's worth staying here just for the views of Riga at night!!

First, I have to say we got a great rate for this hotel, only 75 E for two adults and two children (under 5) including breakfast. But: when we checked in, we got a room facing a horrible ghetto apartment building and mammoth shopping center. We asked before going upstairs if we had a nice view, and were dismissed with a quick, unconcerned 'yes'. I think it is a bad sign that a hotel houses its guests in the worst rooms first. I had to ask to change rooms to one with a view of the river and city skyline - fabulous! - which wasn't a problem, since the hotel was not full. It was in no way an upgrade: the room was on the same floor and even smaller than our first, but with a good view. It is just plain bad business to house guests in the worst rooms possible. Word of mouth is powerful, and I'm writing now that although Renate was very pleasant and friendly about changing our room, I do not approve of the bad-rooms-first philosophy of Islande Hotel.

The breakfast was pretty bad on Friday morning, downright awful on Saturday. The hotel seemed completely unable to manage the number of guests and they ran out of certain foods as well as let many tables pile up with dirty plates. The scrambled eggs were cold and runny, the potatoes undercooked, the milk (H-milk - ugh) was warm, the fruit was old and saggy AND we were charged extra for a cappuccino - which tasted awful.

On the other hand, the hotel has a great sauna/wellness center, but it's only free to guests early in the morning - same time as breakfast. And the cold pool and jacuzzi only get cleaned AFTER 11.00, the time, coincidentally, when hotel guests have to start paying.

The little things add up, and during our stay it was: immediate placement in a room with an ugly view, inadequate-verging-on-terrible breakfast, miserly hours of the sauna and its suspicious cleaning schedule. Finally, having to cross that highly trafficked bridge everyday, twice a day, is horrid. I don't recommend this hotel, stay downtown instead!

Good Hotel with helpful staff. Newly furbished rooms with Ikea-like furniture. Being new some of the fitments were adjusting to use .... for example it won't be long before the shower bar falls from the wall and there wasn't a shower curtain so water sprayed on to the floor making it slippery.
The breakfast was a bit chaotic as the Hotel is used by tour groups and service is minimal. Food came out from the kitchens OK, but it was all self -serve.
Best thing were the beds and the linen, Wonderful quality of bedlinen, Dreamy.
