“9 days in Riga at the World Choir Games”
Reviewed 19 July 2014

I would recommend this Hotel if you need something good value for money when you visit Riga. Its got more of a hostel atmosphere than a hotel. Riga has a very good public transport which is close to the hotel. There is a very good mall not far from the hotel which has a Rimi hypermarket and many shops and fast foods. In general I would say up to 80% of the people of Latvia is very to extremely un-friendly. I stayed at this hotel but was part of a group of close to 200 which was scattered all over Riga and they found exactly the same. And I found the same with the Annabella hotel staff. They try to avoid eye contact at all cost. It seems as if they try their best to be as cold as possible and would never greet or try to be friendly in any way whatsoever. If you try to be friendly and if you greet first they like start up like a steam engine. Slowly and as if with huge effort and it seems as if they think :" oh well whatever, uhhmm hello" (Maybe with a forced grin or a look of please go away) I met many from Riga during the 9 days I was here and some of the very friendly 20%. For that reason the other 80% of Riga and this hotel staff has no excuse. But some say it because they cannot understand or maybe do not know how at react with other types of people or cultures or languages or people they dont know but Im not sure of that. Some kids do that sometimes when they are unsure of someone else . But I find for example many Chinese Germans and French far more friendly and we do not understand each other either. So to me these people are just constantly in a bad mood or something. Or just childish and do not know how to act in a professional way. The first day we noticed we only had one pillow ( and they are fairly small) and we asked for an extra pillow and the answer was plain and straight in a militant way: NO! Well maybe she did not understand because the only person on the staff I found more shy than anything else and the ray of light here at Annabella was Alena. She was always friendly but not like in a professional way. More in a nice and sincere and shy way which is ok with me and better than the rest. And this tells me that these people never got training on how to treat customers in a professional way and be of service and sound like they mean it. As said maybe this is how most of the people of Latvia is and maybe you have to accept it. Some days the room was cleaned from top to bottom. Some days they only did half. Like not to make the bed or clean the cups or glasses. The hotel is very clean and the linen is clean. The beds are good. There was only 3 coat hangers and we didn't want to get another NO so we left it there. The breakfast is very limited but filling and just enough to be called a breakfast. Nothing is hot except the coffee or tea or hot water or when you make toast. Cold hard boiled eggs etc. Good cheese and cold meats and nice bread and two types of cereal and some muffins and some fruit where you sometimes find a banana when you are lucky.
The bottom line is. I will stay here again and recommend it because its a nice place to sleep. Its safe around the area. Its convenient. The price is good and its really clean. But don't expect anything professional or friendly at the Annabella. Just the basics at a good price. And maybe this review wont change them because that's how they are. But they say when you're in Rome do like the Romans. Maybe we are just not used to the Latvians and don't know how they do it. I can never stay as unfriendly and in such a bad mood for 9 days sorry. But the weird thing is I recommend the hotel as I met some nice guests at the hotel. ( And the Annabella staff I think couldn't understand how that could happen)

Rooms are spaciuos, well-equiped and clean. Decent parking near the hotel. Of course, it's not in the city's center, but it is a very good option while travelling by car. The only downside - very poor breakfast.

I chose this location because it was close to our office and also had good reviews. It turned out to be a good choice. It is one of the best values in Riga. Although it is a half hour ride out from the old city, it is 1 block to city bus and 300 meters to the Krustabaznica No 6 tram stop (recommended during traffic times), currently 50 centimes cost to old city. The hotel is also only 1/2 kilometer to Alfa mall, one of the largest in Riga, with food court, restaurants, theatre and lots of shopping, including large grocery store. It is a small hotel with only 12-15 rooms. Because of a split schedule I stayed in two different rooms, one with two single beds and one with double. Both were very clean and comfortable. The property is in a quiet residential neighborhood, so none of the problems I had with live music at night in the old city. Except for a few conversations outside my window, I rarely heard anything in my room. Breakfast was modest but everything I needed, served from 7:30-10:30. Staff was always helpful, spoke English, Latvian and Russian. The only negative is they don't have baggage storage. I needed to store a bag overnight between stays, and they would have hid it a under a table in the dining area. Internet was always available in room and lobby and excellent during my stay.

We liked the hotel very much - helpful stuff, clean room, breakfast. Money exchange in shopping mall Alfa, you can also have something for dinner there. We have found nice (and cheap) cafeteria Oregano (Brivbas, 231) not far from here, and i have spotted a pizzeria - if you move to the center of Riga it will be on the left side at the corner.

Stayed here multiple times. Very good price and also very good value. Internet connection provided I believe by Lattelekom. On average I was getting 2 to 7 MBit/s. Upload also very good. Rooms are comfortable and clean. Though not so soundproof. Breakfast is quite good with good, tasty coffee and decent selection. Staff very friendly and available almost any time of the day to help you. In the evenings you can come down to reception and have a coffee/tea and some cookies. The also have fridge where you can buy a beer etc. Transportation is very good. 20 meters away is a bus/trolleybus stop which will get you to Old Town or City center in about 20 minutes. I would consider the area to be safe, parked the car next to hotel multiple times, no problems. About 800 meters walk direction out of the city is a huge shopping moll called Alfa where you can get pretty much everything. 400 meters away direction City there is a Maxima supermarket where until 22.00 you can buy pretty much everything you need to eat/drink.

Room Tip: I liked the room at the roof level.

It's a great hotel if you are on a budget and don't mind a 20-minute bus ride into the (modern) city of Riga. The most intriguing part for me (after all the good reviews) was how to get there once off the train. Let me tell you how: there are two buses that you can take from the Central Station: #40 and #21 (Google Maps have wrong numbers, btw). The direction for #40 is "Jugla-3" (for #21 I don't quite remember), the bus stop you'll need to get off at is "Dzērbenes iela" (all buses there have a display showing the name of the next bus stop, after 15 or so minutes of a ride keep an eye on it). From the Central Station you'll need to go across the street (by underpass) to the bus stop on Merķeļa iela (you should notice hotel "Irina" there), buy a bus pass (as many rides as you please, 1 LT per 2 rides = $1 a ride) in a newspaper kiosk near the bus stop (make sure #40 is stopping on that bus stop, btw) - and you are all set. From the bus stop you will *not* see the hotel, so you'll need Google Maps after all (a printout served me well), the walk is 3-5 minutes, around the "Subaru" dealership facing the main road.

Also, be prepared to pay up front - it's the hotel's policy. The breakfast there is *good*, the 6-9pm tea is just tea being available in the lobby, nothing fancy. There's a patio outside the main entrance that smokers will appreciate. If you require absolute silence in the morning it may be disturbed by seagulls (they fly into the city looking for food), otherwise it's a perfect off-the-beaten path hotel.

Very friendly small hotel, very good from the point of view on staff and pricing. Room and bathroom were clean and well maintained, offering good level of comfort and quiet sleep, thanks to location. Reception is open 24h, parking is free and under video surveillance, free hi-speed wireless internet is available. Breakfast was included in the price, very basic but OK to start the day. One of the Riga's largest shopping centres is located few hundreds meters from the hotel, you may spend a half of the day there.

On the other hand, the hotel is located quite far from the centre, however bus/trolleybus stop is near about 30m from the hotel, estimate 15-20 min driving a car or riding a bus. I have also noted that some equipment in the room (e.g. TV) should be repaired or replaced.

Conclusively would stay at this hotel again and recommend as a good budget accommodation for a short-stay or transit travellers in Riga, suitable both for single or family trips.
